Scale six miles to the inch. Hand-coloured. A very detailed map that shows the extent of the early railway network. With one key to railways completed, railways in progress and railways completed and a second key to roads, turnpikes, rivers, canals, towns, constituency arrangements post Reform Act, gentlemen's seats etc. Folds into drab black cloth covers. Parties Orientales de l'Asie based on classical maps by the geographers of Alexandria and Eratosthenes and his followers. On one single sheet with maps 46 by 28 cm. One fold. The first map shows India in relation to Arabia and lands identified as Perse (Persia) Scythie Arie and Bactriane. The second more detailed map depicts India Scythie Arie and Serique as one land mass with the island of Taprobane (Sri Lanka). Uncoloured. Unusual. Good condition. Image available.

The city plans the outstanding feature of the book are by Dufour and engraved by Dubuisson and are of Paris Vienna Berlin Rome Madrid London St. Petersbourg Constantinople Calcutta Cairo New York and Rio de Janeiro. Text in French. Double-page maps opening to 30 by 24 cm. With the stamp of a Russian 19th century library to the title page and a name and date in ink (from 1851)- also Russian- to the front endpapers. Occasional minor foxing and some rubbing to spine and corners but binding and contents VG condition. Images available.
