A larger and more detailed version of the Betts Railroad map of the same period. A key provides an explanation of the lines opened, lines in progress, and projected railways. Includes a small inset map of the Scillies and the tip of Cornwall. Folds into cloth covers with the title and some pricing information, and then into original slipcase with the title gold-stamped to the front. Above the title to the top margin of the map is an ink signature and the rather grand address of the original owner. Map in VG condition, case slightly rubbed. Images available. Very Good.

Signed by the author and dedicated to a Mr J Chilton, a passenger on the RMS Ascania, with the additional hand-written information that the book was presented to him en voyage in the mid-Atlantic in September 1934. This might well be evidence of a little sideline in bookselling by the captain, who presumably had a captive audience. Includes information on such topics as icebergs, the use of wireles at sea, fancy dress, deck tennis, the Suez and Panama canals, navigation and the roles of various crew members. Includes an appendix on distances between ports. Small stain to the bottom edge that does not affect the text. Some scuffing to head and foot of spine but overall Good to VG condition. Very Good. What gives this late Victorian atlas its particular appeal is its range of maps of North America. Whilst there are 20 maps of Europe 11 of Asia 4 of Africa and 5 of Australasia there are 34 of North America and many of these are of individual or neighbouring pairs of states. All maps VG some foxing to endpapers and wear to head and foot of spine and rubbing to the raised bands but overall in Good to VG condition. Images available.

Signature of the original owner and the date 1820 appear in ink above the title page. Minor foxing throughout but binding sound and all maps in VG condition.
