(5.4 x 3.5 inches). viii, 232pp. Dual French and English text on each page. Original Publishers binding of half black sheep with marbled paper on boards. Printed blue paper label mounted onto the front board. Gilt lettering to the spine. Previous owners neat notes written in black ink on the front blank free endpaper. A couple of pages are a little loose and have minor fraying to the page edges. The hinges are cracked but holding and the binding is rubbed to the edges. The whole book is a bit loose in the binding. The publishers advertisement states that the book is "for the improvement of Young Persons in Epistolary Correspondence". A scarce Juvenile Instruction book. A search of Worldcat shows just one copy in Library holdings globally, that being the one in the British Library.

Early edition.Originally published for Christmas 1849.Full page frontis and decorative title page plus 21 smaller illustrations throughout the text by Doyle.The frontis and decorative title page are both foxed,otherwise generally a clean copy.Finely bound in early twentieth century half green morocco,spine with five raised bands.Compartments decorated,lettered and ruled in gilt.Green paper on boards.Blue endpapers.Bound by Chatelis,with their gilt stamp on top of front inner board.Previous owners book plate on front paste-down.Top edge gilt.A nicely bound early edition.The work,about a poor doll maker whose workshop is invaded by kind fairies,was originally written by Lemon to entertain Charles Dicken's children and is dedicated to Mary and Kate Dickens.It was published for the 1849 Christmas market and was compared by many reviewers with Dickens Christmas books.The Ladies Companion beleived that these illustrations secured Doyle's importance as an illustrator for children.Overall a very good copy of this pretty little book.:

The dustwrapper has a few light stains, but none too obtrusive, and is a little chipped and rubbed to the edges. The spine is a little darkened. Overall a very good copy in a very good dustwrapper.

Finely bound in late 19th/early 20th century arts and crafts style leather binding of full dark green Morocco. Spine with raised bands, each with three gilt dots. The compartments rule, lettered, and fully decorated with floral devices, all in gilt. Both boards with matching triple ruled borders and decorative floral, dot and ruled line design. Board edges with single gilt ruled lines. Turn-ins decorated with triple ruled lines, dots and floral devices, all in gilt. Plain green endpapers. All edges gilt. A lovely copy of this 19th century poem in a fine, highly attractive, but sadly unsigned by the binder, leather binding. ---- Lorne was a Liberal politician, son in law of Queen Victoria, through his marriage to Princess Louise, and in 1878 was appointed Governor General of Canada by Disraeli. He wrote several books, including both travel and poetry, combining two of his great loves in this volume.
