Some foxing to the plain tissue paper guard over the frontispiece and a few minor spots throughout but overall a very clean and bright copy in a fine late 19th century leather binding. Full red calf, the spine with five raised bands, each with double rope design in gilt. Compartments ruled and fully decorated in gilt. Dark green morocco title label, gilt. Leaf and rose roll gilt borders on boards. Decorative gilt design on board edges. Decorative blind stamped inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Red silk page marker bound in. Grantham School arms stamped on the front board in gilt. Previous owners neat name stamp to top of the first leaf after title page. Aside from a small area of loss to the leather on the front board and another on the lower spine hinge this is a very good copy in a fine quality leather binding. The binding is not signed but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

Macmillan and Co. London. 1894. FIRST BROCK EDITION, Large paper issue. One of only 110 copies issued. Large 8vo. (10.5 x 7.4 inches). One hundred fine line illustrations by Brock. Tissue guard to the frontis. Some minor offsetting to the blank endpapers otherwise a fine and clean copy throughout. In the original publishers burgundy cloth binding with printed paper label to the spine. The spine is a bit faded and there is some loss to one corner of the label, not affecting the lettering, but this is still a lovely copy of this scarce volume. With an attractive Art Nouveau bookplate of Christie Chetwynd Atkinson, decorated and illustrated with two women reading, by M.C. Fisher, dated 1902, on the front pastedown endpaper.

Finely bound in early twentieth century half tan calf leather binding by Riviere. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Tan cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. A little rubbing to the corners but overall a very good, highly attractive copy of this Victorian classic.

Spine with double raised bands decorated with gilt double wavy lines. Dark green morocco onlays in between the bands with gilt floral rolls. Compartments ruled, letered and decorated in gilt. Decorative gilt roll to the board edges. Floral gilt inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. --- Neat gift presentation, dated December 31st 1863, on a sheet of paper and mounted onto a blank free endpaper. A few small areas of rubbing to extremities, else a fine copy. ----- First Edition of one of the finest examples of Victorian colour printing and the first with the colour illustrations designed purposely for the text. The book was the brainchild of the printer Edmund Evans, who declared it to be the most carefully executed book he had ever printed. In the original illustrated dustwrapper which has some fading to the spine but overall is very good. A slight lean to the book but generally a very good copy of this fascinating account. One of an unspecified number distributed in the UK and with the UK publisher's label mounted over the New York publisher's name on the title page. ----- James Howell Howard was a Brigadier General in the United States Air Force and was the only fighter pilot in the European Theater of Operations in World War II to receive the Medal of Honor — the United States military's highest decoration, as well as many other others, including the Distinguished Flying Cross.
