One of 100 copies, numbered and signed by Michael Foreman on the title page and with a numbered and signed original etching loosely inserted. This copy number 1 of the book and etching. Illustrated in full colour throughout with the text confined to the margins. Hemingway's children's short story, a loose parody of Ferdinand the Bull, was originally published in Holiday magazine in 1951. This is the first printing with these illustrations. A fine copy in publishers laminated boards with full colour illustration to the front board. Colour illustrated endpapers. Etching image measures 3.9 x 3 inches on a sheet of untrimmed hand made paper measuring 9.5 x 7.5 inches, and has a loose tissue guard to protect it. The book is housed in a plain brown paper covered slip case.

Inscribed on the front paste down endpaper by Nicholson to the Daughter, and her second Husband, of his Mistress and house keeper Marie Laquelle; "For Georgette and Norman Holder with love from W. N. who did the pictures. London. Xmas. 1916". Decorative colour printed front board, lettered and showing the illustration for The Bus Driver, plus twelve full page colour lithographs after the original woodblocks. Brown paper covered boards, printed in colour litho. Plain tan cloth spine. Some minor foxing to endpapers and the edges of the boards are rubbed and bumped. Spine cloth is frayed and split,with boards still firmly attached, but overall a very good copy of this beautiful book with an interesting association. Housed in a felt-lined clam-shell box. Marbled paper on boards and a black calf spine, lettered in gilt. ---- 'From about 1910 until he remarried in 1919, Nicholson's housekeeper Marie Laquelle, whose real name was Adèle Marie Schwarz, née Schiestel, was also his mistress. Nicholson painted her several times, first as Carlina in 1909; he also painted her daughter Georgette and her second husband Norman Holder'. Spine a bit darkened and rubbed. Boards with areas of darkening to top(where the book has sat on a shelf between shorter books). Overall a very good copy in a very good, highly attractive early binding. Herbert's great Scandinavian poem appears to have only been printed twice in his life-time, This first edition and a second printing of 1816.:

Original oatmeal coloured paper covered boards with title printed in outline and hand coloured, to the front panel. Spine of the outer wrapper is split, a little chipped and edges rubbed but overall a very good copy of this charming and rare book. No copies listed on Copac or Worldcat.

Published on behalf of the subscribers by William MacLellan. Glasgow. 1955. FIRST EDITION, first impression. 4to. (11.2 x 8.9 inches). Illustrated with several full page and smaller illustrations by Fergusson, one in green ink, the others all in black. Publishers green cloth with gilt decoration to the front board and spine lettered in gilt. Some faded spots to the spine cloth and some spotting and offsetting to the blank endpapers otherwise a very good bright copy in the original dustwrapper which is decorated and lettered in white on green paper. Some very minor rubbing to the extremities but overall a very good book in a better than very good dustwrapper. First impression, one of about 140 to 150 copies printed and issued to subscribers. A trade issue was published the following year. There is a list of the 135 subscribers printed at the rear of the book. --- A note from Fergusson on the decorations appears before the main text. "The Ogam alphabet was an indigenous script of old Ireland named after Ogma, the Celtic God of Literature and Eloquence. The decorations are composed of Joyce's initials in Ogam and other characters together with other symbols that convey Joyce's concern with music, creation, feeling and his native Ireland. -- J. D.
