The book was written in the summer of 1942, at a time when the outcome of the war could still seem very disquieting, and appeared in French early in the spring of 1943, at a time when, whatever acts of desperation or machiavellianism Germany might yet try, her defeat and that of her partners seemed certain. All this has come about because here in 1858 a frail 14 year old girl, Bernadette Soubirous, experienced a series of visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary and discovered a spring of clear water in a cave.
