GILCHRIST, JAMES
Anglican Church Plate
London, The Connoisseur/Michael Joseph. 1967, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from dust marking to top edge) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 120 pages. 8 colour plates. 75 illustrations. The book reflects the variations of an art form that has developed stylistically from Pre-Reformation times to the present day. Despite the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the ravages of time, an enormous number of churches in Britain still own exceptionally fine plate. The author traces the evolution of Anglican plate from the 9th century Trewhiddle Chalice, the earliest extant piece of plate, through the secular designs of the Post-Reformation era and the 19th century Tractarian restoration of Pre-Reformation shapes to the simple and functional contemporary objects. R3. Near Fine/Near Fine.

CARR-GOMM, PHILIP
Sacred Places - Sites of Spiritual Pilgrimage from Stonehenge to Santiago de Compostela
London, Quercus. 2008, First. (ISBN: 9781847244215). Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. An As New copy in and As New dustjacket which is not price clipped. First Edition, First Printing. a large format volume of 256 pages lavishly colur illustrated. Journeys to sacred places or shrines undertaken as acts of veneration or penance have been a feature of religious observance from the earliest times. Ancient religions had holy sites, temples and groves, such as Delphi and Dodona in Greece, where oracles and their priestesses were reputed to be able to tell the future. Even older is Stonehenge - whose original religious purpose is still shrouded in mystery - and the Pyramids of Giza, defying all attempts to fathom their mysteries. During the medieval period Christian pilgrimage - to Jerusalem, Rome, Constantinople and Santiago de Compostela - was a sacred obligation and a trial of faith. On the other side o the Eurasian landmass, the Golden Temple and the Dome of the Rock became two of the holiest sites of the Sikh and Islamic faiths, with pilgrimage to Mecca, or hajj, becoming one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The author tells the stories of 50 sacred sites across all five continents, including sites venerated by all of the major religions. Many of the world's holiest sanctuaries and landscapes are here examined in a series of concise, informative and lavisly illustrated essays. PLEASE NOTE: A LARGE HEAVY BOOK OF 1.32 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COSTS A1F. As New/As New.

GRANT, R.M.
The Earliest Lives of Jesus
London, SPCK. 1961, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy with VG dustjacket. ix + 134 pages. In this study of the early patristic treatment of the life of Jesus Dr. Grant points out that historical criticism is not an invention of modern scholarship. An examination of the exegetical works of Origen and his predecessors reveals an awareness in their authors of the historical problems presented by the four Gospels. In attempts to solve these problems the early Christian commentators often borrowed their methods and techniques from contemporary pagan writers. Dr. Grant considers these methods in a valuable chapter on Greek literary and historical criticism. His findings enable him to bear in his detailed and critical examination of the achievements of the Fathers, and of Origen in particular, in their interpretation of the life of Jesus. NOT EX LIB R1. Meditationen Uber Lukas
Zurich, Benziger. 1959. Kaum etwas scheint notwendiger.
