MCEWEN, SIR JOHN
Fenelon Letters
London, Harvill Press. 1964, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good+ to near Fine copy which has a name and date to front endpaper else clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has a few repaired closed tears. 318 pages. Portrait frontispiece. Introduction by Thomas Merton. Sir John McEwen died before this book had reached its final form. Professor J.C. Reid very kindly organized the material and supplied most of the footnotes. François de Salignac de la Mothe Fénelon (1651-1715) Archbishop of Cambrai, has been described by Lord Acton as 'a witness against one century and the precursor of another'. Born in the turbulent 17th century his outlook was humane and tolerant; he detested oppression in all its forms and expressed deep sympathy for the ordinary people whose lives were wrecked by constant wars. He rose rapidly in the Church and became an important figure at the Court of Louis XIV where he directed the education of the heir to the throne. Sir John McEwen's selection gives a well rounded picture of Fénelon both as a great master of the spiritual life and as a wise counsellor on worldly affairs. Moreover, he has transformed the simple lucid style of 'the Swan of Cambrai' into an English of equal charm. NOT EX LIB R1. Very Good/Very Good.

SEED, FATHER MICHAEL WITH BOTHAM, NOEL
Sinners and Saints
London, Metro Publishing. 2009, First Edition. (ISBN: 9781844547708). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. First edition, first printing. 277 pages. Father Michael Seed has been at the privileged centre of events for a quarter of a century, and has played a uniquely influential role. In this memoir Britain's 'priest to the stars' covers his encounters with some of the prominent political and public figures of a generation, and gives a rare and fascinating glimpse of behind-the-scenes events in the corridors of power. For years he secretly gave mass to the Blairs in Downing Street, initially slipping through a rear, ground floor window, before it was leaked to the press in 2006. His has been a turbulent ride through life, denounced and envied by those who dislike his champagne style of Catholicism, loved by those who declare him a saint, and so admired by The Times that it demanded he be instantly made a bishop. His friendship with people like best chum Ann Widdecombe, Alan Clark, the Duchess of Argyll, Lord Longford, George Carman QC, John Paul Getty, the Duke of Norfolk, a host of royals and half a dozen prime ministers, has left little room for dullness. He provides insights into life in Westminster Cathedral and with Cardinal Basil Hume. R1. Fine/Fine.

MITCHELL, BASIL (EDITED BY)
How to Play Theological Ping-Pong and Other Essays on Faith and Reason
London, Hodder and Stoughton. 1990. (ISBN: 0340513837). Soft Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy. Professor Mitchell, in the semi-serious essay that gives its title to this book, argues that much current theological argument resembles a game in which the players are forced to choose between false alternatives - ping or pong. In the other essays Basil Mitchell develops, primarily as a philosopher with a keen interest in theology, some of the important themes that have concerned him, and asks if there is a distinctive Christain ethic applicable to modern man, ponders whether the law should be based on Christian values, queries the rightful place of symbols in Christianity, and wonders at the example of Christ's love for an unyielding world. MOORHOUSE, GEOFFREY
Against All Reason
London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson. 1969. (ISBN: 029717679X). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Gold title on black cloth boards which have small marks to lower edge but no wear. Internally there is foxing to fore edge, a name and date to front endpaper else clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has a small repaired closed tear and light wear to edges. xiii + 436 pages. 23 half-tone illustrations. Over a million and a quarter people lead the monastic and other forms of the religious life in the Western world - Benedictines, Trappists, Franciscans, Dominicans, Jesuits and members of many other orders and institutes. Their lives are still largely based on St. Augustine's doctrine of perfection, still regulated for the most part by a medieval timetable. For a Cistercian nun this means that the day begins when a bell rings in her dormitory at 2.45 a.m. to summon her to the Night Office. Only by living for a time in a monastery is it really possible to grasp the startling difference between that existence and life as the rest of us know it. For the first time in 1,400 years there are signs of a dramatic change in the direction, the structure and the justification of the religious life. In this deeply sympathetic survey of the religious life in the modern world Geoffrey Moorhouse describes the daily life of monks, nuns and other religious; the effects of authority and the demands of obedience. He explores the meaning and purpose of prayer, and of a vocation that leads men and women to renounce the prospect of marriage, to abandon all private possessions and submit to rigid rules of conduct for the rest of their lives.
