¶ This book is a unique and comprehensive illustrated dictionary of French Art Nouveau Ceramics. A census conducted in 1901 indicated the existence of some 209 producers of pottery in France, employing a total of around 5,800 full-time labourers. This great activity stimulated a parallel development in the arts, including the search for new expressions in art pottery, giving birth to l'art nouveau, a great and eclectic synthesis of a number of other art styles. Largely through British arts and crafts, and the work of artists like the Manxman Archibald Knox, it reached far back into the prehistory of Celtic art. To this were added later medieval elements, through the gothic revival championed by William Morris. The need for renewal, breaking away from the neo-Classical and academia, which was realm of the upper-class culture, was largely theorised by John Ruskin, who searched elsewhere for inspiration. Thus did British art nouveau also partake of Chinese and Japanese styles, though never in so forceful a manner as did the French aesthetic. France, on the one side, looked back to the swirling and frivolous eighteenth century Rococo, primarily through the influence of the Goncourt brothers, Edmond and Jules, influential aesthetes of the mid nineteenth century. The book focuses especially on artists working stoneware or gre's, faience, and terracotta. It aims to provide a general survey of the many artists working in these areas, and includes brief accounts of the ceramics work of sculptors and painters whose wider output is already well know.

¶ Van oudsher zijn de priestergewaden bij uitstek de objecten waaraan in een kerk de meeste aandacht en het meeste geld werd besteed. Ze waren, en zijn nog steeds vaak, van een oogverblindende en hemelse schoonheid. Toen het voortbestaan van de katholieke kerk tijdens de Republiek bedreigd werd en katholieke schuilkerken niet herkenbaar mochten zijn vanaf de straat, werd aan de binnenkant gecompenseerd wat aan de buitenkant niet getoond mocht worden. In de zeventiende eeuw werden de gewaden gouden, zilveren en zijden uitingen van stil verzet, maar ook van een feministische agenda van de makers. Achter gesloten deuren werd letterlijk en figuurlijk alles uit de kast getrokken om het katholieke geloof uit te dragen. Gedragen baljurken met kleurrijke gebloemde Franse, Engelse en Chinese modestoffen werden door rijke, vrome vrouwen aan de kerk geschonken zodat er prachtige en bijzondere kerkgewaden van gemaakt konden worden. Zo kon het dus zomaar voorkomen dat er een priester in een roze gewaad met bloemetjes aan het altaar stond.

¶ Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891) is een sleutelfiguur in de schilderkunst van de 19de eeuw en pionier van het impressionisme. Hij werd geboren in Nederland, maar woonde het grootste deel van zijn leven in Frankrijk, waar hij bevriend raakte met kunstenaars als Monet, Boudin, Daubigny en Pissarro. Jongkind schilderde naast stadsgezichten vooral kust- en rivierlandschappen. Zijn rake observaties van de natuur en zijn directe, losse manier van schilderen waren een eye opener voor de Franse kunstenaars. Vanuit de Hollandse, realistische traditie gaf Jongkind de aanzet tot het impressionisme in Frankrijk. Monet zei dat Jongkind hem had leren kijken: 'Hij zorgde voor de opvoeding van mijn oog'. Manet noemde hem 'de vader van het moderne landschap'. Zijn werk was zeer geliefd bij het Franse publiek. Geregeld keerde Jongkind terug naar Nederland waar hij ijsgezichten, maannachten, de havens van Rotterdam en Dordrecht en het Hollandse polderlandschap schilderde. Jongkind noemde Dordrecht 'de mooiste stad van Nederland' en spoorde zijn Franse vrienden aan om ook naar de schilderachtige stad af te reizen.
