Augarde, Jean-Dominique:, A Journey Through Clocks. Masterpieces from the Parnassia Collection.
Augarde, Jean-Dominique:
A Journey Through Clocks. Masterpieces from the Parnassia Collection.
05 2022, (24 x 30 cm), 2 volumes, 496 pp. English text, ca. 400 ills, hardcover and slipcase.
¶ The Parnassia Collection is a sumptuous collection of clocks, the models of which were produced in a few copies, or even only one, and executed between 1790 and 1820, sometimes a little later. They were chosen for their aesthetics, the quality of their cases and, of course, their perfect condition. They coexist with some previous works meaningfully, but all are linked to the framework of the collection, which is divided into two parts. The first includes what we have called, for lack of imagination, 'classic' clocks, the other includes the main models of what we call 'black' clocks. Their reunion justifies the subtitle that we have given to this work, 'An odyssey in pendulums'. This set is an example of what the passion for beauty, even focused on a period, can lead to, that is to say, dazzle. Jean-Dominique Augarde, art historian specializing in decorative arts and author of several reference books.

The Watch Book.
2022, (25 x 32 cm), 256 pp. English, French, German text, 250 colour ills., hardcover.
¶ Few objects combine function, elegance, and status as well as a wristwatch. Ones choice of chronograph reveals a great deal because it shows the value we place on the most precious resource of all-time. A blend of precise mechanics, craftsmanship, fine materials, and innovation distinguishes the truly superlative examples. In The Watch Book, readers can feast their eyes and minds on a magnificently-illustrated and well-documented chronicle of the worlds best timepieces. First, were treated to a brief discussion on the meaning of time and its measurement by ticking sets of gears and hands. Next we delve into more than 18 premium manufacturers, including Patek Philippe, Rolex, and Cartier. These biographies of the most important names in top-end timekeeping trace the progressive development from their earliest days right up to the latest innovations and current models. We explore just what makes these houses outstanding, learning about the remarkable breakthroughs that established them as the crème de la crème of the European watch industry. Gisbert Brunner, born in 1947, has been working with wristwatches, pendulum clocks, and other precision timekeeping instruments since 1964. During the quartz watch crisis in the 1970s, he discovered a new love for mechanical timepieces as well. His talent and passion for collecting chronographs led him to publish his first articles on the subject in magazines including GQ, ZEIT Magazin and Chronos in the 1980s. He has since written more than 20 books about every aspect of the field.

Chadwick, Richard:, A Voyage Through Time. The Masis Collection of Horlogical Masterpieces.
Chadwick, Richard:
A Voyage Through Time. The Masis Collection of Horlogical Masterpieces.
07 2020, (23f,5 x 32,4 cm), 416 pp. English text, Numerour ills., hardcover.
¶ The Masis Collection is one of the most comprehensive privately owned assemblages of pocket watches in the world. Focusing on the watch as a work of art, it encompasses over four hundred years of the watchmaker's, enameller's and goldsmith's craft. This lavishly illustrated book takes the reader not only on a journey through the development of the mechanical watch, but for the first time, shows the artistic progression of watch case decoration in the fashionable styles that walked hand in hand with wider European artistic movements. Beginning with some of the earliest surviving portable timepieces, the Masis Collection includes watches that can be considered among the greatest European miniature works of art to ever be created. The collection is particularly rich in examples of gloriously painted Geneva enamels, particularly those of the Huaud family working in the baroque period. Its strength also lies in the breathtakingly beautiful enamel watches made for export to China and Turkey in the early years of the 19th century. This book aims to inform the reader not only of the richness and diversity of the Masis collection itself but to adequately display some of the watchmaking masterpieces that have enthralled their owners down the centuries.

Fleischer, Alette & Bart Krieger:
Gilded Splendour. The pendules au Bon Sauvage & au Noir Enchaïné. Iconography of the Pendules au Noir in the Parnassia Collection.
10 2022, ( x cm), 104 pp. English text, numerous ills., softcover.
¶ In this cahier, art historians Alette Fleischer (PhD) and Bart Krieger (M.A.) unravel the hidden messages of the black clocks of the Parnassia Collection and categorize them in a novel way. They have aimed to contextualize the pendulum clocks au Noir in the historic timeframe they were created in and displayed (ca 1790-1830) and uncovered some of their iconographic secrets with links to the transatlantic slavetrade, Eurocentrism and the French Enlightenment. Moreover, the two art historians ponder on the question if we, as an emancipated society, are allowed and able to enjoy these pendulum clocks today.Have you ever seen a French Empire gilded pendulum clock like the one depicted on the cover? The scene looks deliciously tantalizing. A young man and woman are making love. This scene seems delightfully frivolous and easy to comprehend, however there is more to it than meets the eye. For instance, did you notice the slave bands they are wearing? This is just one of the conversation pieces full of philosophical riddles from the Parnassia Collection. This Dutch-owned private collection is one of the most complete in the world. Fraiture, Eddy:, Uurwerkmakers en uurwerknijverheid in Vlaanderen.
Fraiture, Eddy:
Uurwerkmakers en uurwerknijverheid in Vlaanderen.
2002, (23 x 29 cm), 296 pp. Dutch text, numerous ills. in colour & b/w,, paperback.
