Hij was koning der Franken, Frankisch keizer van de christelijke wereld en wordt vandaag gezien als de vader van Europa. Levend in een tijdvak waarin een oude wereld aftakelde en een nieuwe beschaving aarzelend haar eerste passen zette, is Karel de Grote een van de voornaamste erflaters van het huidige Europa geworden. Ook in zijn eigen tijd sprak Karel de Grote al tot de verbeelding. Na zijn dood in 814 leefde hij verder in talloze verhalen en kunstwerken. Maar het mythisch beeld van de dappere, grootse vorst dat daarin gecreëerd wordt, dreigt de historische figuur te overschaduwen. Het boek volgt hem op zijn veldtochten, ziet hem als bestuurder van een immens rijk, bespreekt de betekenis van zijn keizerskroning in 800, maakt hem mee in zijn zoektocht naar kennis en ontmoet hem tenslotte als een bezorgde familievader. Bauer gaat ook dieper in op de Karolingische Renaissance, waaraan de Frankische vorst als geen ander gestalte heeft gegeven. Het is de eerste Nederlandstalige synthese over deze periode.

¶ Formé à l'école d'art appliqué Germain-Pilon, créée sous la IIIe République dans le but de réconcilier art et industrie, l'orfèvre Maurice Daurat allie la sensibilité d'un artiste à une simplicité d'artisan. Abandonnant dans les années 1920 la fonte et la ciselure pour le montage au marteau, Maurice Daurat travaille très tôt l'étain, métal alors méprisé, dont il saura exploiter les qualités avec un talent rare pour réaliser des pièces uniques ou en très petites séries, mais aussi des Ïuvres monumentales, comme les vases du paquebot Normandie en 1935 ou le vase luminaire d'une hauteur de 3,12 mètres destiné à la rotonde Alma du musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris en 1937.
