Promotional Poster / Brochure for the Palace Hotel in San Francisco - Specifically the Rose Room Featuring the World's Most Celebrated Dancers the de Marcos and Ronnie Kemper and His Orchestra
San Francisco, CA: The Palace Hotel, 1942. Other. B&W Illustrations; 1942. This is a brochure / promotional poster (approx. 15" x 10 1/2 " features a photo of The De Marcos on the inside and the details of their preformances on the other side. The promotional piece folds twice to make a brochure. "Completely rebuilt from the ground up, the "New" Palace Hotel opened on December 19, 1909, and quickly resumed the role of its namesake predecessor as an important San Francisco landmark as well as host to many of the city's great events. While externally much plainer than the original Palace, the new "Bonanza Inn" is in many ways as elegant, sumptuous, and gracious on the inside as the 1875 building. The "Garden Court" (also called the "Palm Court") —which occupies the same area that the Grand Court did in the earlier structure—has been one of San Francisco's most prestigious hotel dining rooms since the day it opened. Equally famous was the "Pied Piper" Bar located just off the gleaming polished marble lobby, which was dominated by Maxfield Parrish's 16-by-6-foot (4.9 by 1.8 m) , 250-pound (110 kg) painting of the same name. The Ralston Room, named for co-founder William Ralston, is off the main lobby to the left of the painting. " (from Wikipedia) "DeMarco was born in Buffalo, New York, on 1 January 1898. He was the son of a farmer, whose father had lost the family mill in Palermo through neglecting business to dance at folk festivals around Italy. De Marco became a dancer despite his father's opposition. He began his career as a solo dancer, then with partners, in burlesque and vaudeville, in the prohibition-era speakeasies. De Marco danced with several female partners, of whom the best known were his wives. Tony's first wife was Nina Kroner and his second Renée. Tony and Renee began dancing together when he was 29 and she was 16. He was best known for his performances with his third wife, Sally Craven, a ballet dancer. Sally Craven doubled for Vivien Leigh in the long shots of dances in Gone with the Wind (1939). " (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

(EPHEMERA) [PACIFIC COAST BASEBALL] [SAN FRANCISCO SEALS]
The San Francisco Seals 1947 Line-Up Booklet - Signed By Players and Coach
San Francisco, CA: San Francisco Seals Baseball, 1947. Ephemera. B&W Illustrations; SIGNED EDITION. This booklet has been signed by all the team members on their page. This is a small format booklet with illustrated covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. Each player's page includes his signature, including the coaches and the trainer. The first page is for the manager Francis Joseph O'Doul -- better known as Lefty O'Doul." The San Francisco Seals were a minor league baseball team in San Francisco, California, that played in the Pacific Coast League from 1903 until 1957 before transferring to Phoenix, Arizona. They were named for the abundant California sea lion and harbor seal populations in the Bay Area. The 1909, 1922, 1925, and 1928 Seals were recognized as being among the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time." "In 1945, a controlling interest in the team was purchased by businessman Paul Fagan, with the stated intention of bringing Major League Baseball to the west coast by having the Pacific Coast League becoming the nation's third major league. He spent thousands of dollars upgrading Seals Stadium to perceived major league standards. He hired former major league player Lefty O'Doul, a native San Franciscan and fan favorite, as manager. Though the Seals won the pennant in 1946, subsequent teams under Fagan's watch did not fare as well, typically finishing in the second division. Rival clubs did not buy into Fagan's major league ambitions. Rather, they established working agreements with major league teams, and fared better than did the independent Seals." [EPHEMERA] [PHOTO] [SIGNED PHOTO] [BALLET] [ANTON DOLIN]
Signed Photograph of Sir Anton Dolin
No Place: No Publisher Listed, 1965. Hardcover. B&W Photographs; SIGNED EDITION. 8"x12" photo in an 11"x14" frame. The photo is in Near Fine to Fine condition (there's a paper backing on the frame which I hate to disturb). The photo has been signed with blue ink by the subject, Sir Anton Dolin "Beloved Hazel, Devotedly, Anton. 1965" From Wikipedia: "Sir Anton Dolin (27 July 1904 – 25 November 1983) was an English ballet dancer and choreographer. Dolin was born in Slinfold in Sussex as Sydney Francis Patrick Chippendall Healey-Kay but was generally known as Patrick Kay. He trained at Serafina Astafieva's school at The Pheasantry in London's King's Road. He joined Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1921, was a principal there from 1924, and was a principal with the Vic-Wells Ballet in the 1930s. There he danced with Alicia Markova, with whom he went on to found the Markova-Dolin Ballet and the London Festival Ballet." and from the NY Times obituary: " As a dancer, Sir Anton repeatedly found himself the male star in ballet companies that were launched under his auspices or in which he played an influential role. When British ballet was in its infancy, Dame Ninette de Valois asked him to dance in her productions for the Camargo Society, which he helped form in 1930. When she founded what is now the Royal Ballet, Sir Anton and Dame Alicia Markova were its stars. The two young Diaghilev alumni formed one of the great partnerships of classical ballet. In 1935, both dancers left the Vic-Wells Ballet to form their own company, the Markova-Dolin Ballet, which continued until 1938. From 1945 to 1948 they headed a touring unit. In 1949, they established a new British troupe, which became London's Festival Ballet in 1950. As its artistic director and principal dancer until 1961, Sir Anton promoted an eclectic repertory and touring policy that made Festival Ballet the popular British company it is today. He was knighted in 1981." The recipient of the inscription is Hazel Hergenhohn, or Baroness Hazel Hergenhohn -- who resided in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1950's-1960's and kept on-going friendships with a number of jet-setter types. It appears she was either a patron of the SF ballet, or was able to mingle with the principles as this is only one of several signed photos of principal dancers in her collection. ; Signed by Artist. Music critic Alan Blyth said: "Her voice was a rich, vibrant contralto of intrinsic beauty." Most of her singing career was spent performing in concert and recital in major music venues and with famous orchestras throughout the United States and Europe between 1925 and 1965. Although offered roles with many important European opera companies, Anderson declined, as she had no training in acting. She preferred to perform in concert and recital only. She did, however, perform opera arias within her concerts and recitals. She made many recordings that reflected her broad performance repertoire of everything from concert literature to lieder to opera to traditional American songs and spirituals. Between 1940 and 1965 the German-American pianist Franz Rupp was her permanent accompanist.". Very Good+ .
