AMES AERONAUTICAL LABORATORY / NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR AERONAUTICS
Group of 16 Black and White Photographs from the Naca, Ames Aeronautical Laboratory at Moffett Field, Ca C1944-1958
Moffett Field, CA: National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, 0. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This group of sixteen 8" x 10" black and white photographs from the NACA Ames Aeronautical Laboratory all have the NACA logo and photograph identification inside the photo and an identifier notation at the bottom edge of the white outer border. The photos themselves mostly cover the the use of Schlieren photography at supersonic or subsonic speeds or the wind tunnels in which the photography was produced. The photographs are all in Very Good+ condition. Two of the photographs have ink stamped designation from NACA which has been crossed out with blue pen. Unfortunately the photos are undated but can be positively dated between 1944 and 1958. "On 9 August 1939, as World War II began, Congress authorized the construction of a second National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) laboratory for urgent research in aircraft structures. Ground was broken for the laboratory at Moffett Field, California, in December 1939 and operations began in early 1941. NACA named the facility "Ames Aeronautical Laboratory" in 1944 in honor of Dr. Joseph S. Ames, leading aerodynamicist and former president of Johns Hopkins University. Wind tunnels are central to Ames' history. Several wind tunnels were opened in the 1940s to test and refine aircraft, guided missiles, satellites, and reentry bodies. Of particular note are three tunnels later designated key national resources. The 40 x 80-foot wind tunnel opened in June 1944 to conduct aircraft development work. The 12-foot subsonic wind tunnel, opened in July 1946. The Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel enabled Ames to conduct new research; almost all NASA manned space vehicles, including the Space Shuttle, were tested in the Unitary." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

It first entered service with the Royal Navy in April 1980 as the Sea Harrier FRS1 and became informally known as the "Shar". Unusual in an era in which most naval and land-based air superiority fighters were large and supersonic, the principal role of the subsonic Sea Harrier was to provide air defence of Royal Navy aircraft carriers.". Originally developed by UK manufacturer Hawker Siddeley in the 1960s, the Harrier emerged as the only truly successful V/STOL design of the many attempted during that era, despite being a subsonic aircraft, unlike most of its competitors. It was conceived to operate from improvised bases, such as car parks or forest clearings, without requiring large and vulnerable air bases. Later, the design was adapted for use from aircraft carriers.". Very Good+ .

Color Illustrations; This is a small, newspaper style journal made up of two sheets of paper, folded along the spine, and again horizontally. The journal is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. "British Aerospace plc (BAe) was a British aircraft, munitions and defence-systems manufacturer. Its head office was at Warwick House in the Farnborough Aerospace Centre in Farnborough, Hampshire. In 1999 it purchased Marconi Electronic Systems, the defence electronics and naval shipbuilding subsidiary of the General Electric Company plc, to form BAE Systems. The company was formed in the United Kingdom as a statutory corporation on 29 April 1977 as a result of the Aircraft and Shipbuilding Industries Act. This called for the nationalisation and merger of the British Aircraft Corporation, Hawker Siddeley Aviation, Hawker Siddeley Dynamics and Scottish Aviation. In 1979 BAe officially joined Airbus, the UK having previously withdrawn support for the consortium in April 1969. In accordance with the provisions of the British Aerospace Act 1980 the statutory corporation was changed to a public limited company (plc) , under the name British Aerospace Public Limited Company, on 1 January 1981. On 4 February 1981 the government sold 51.57% of its shares. The British government sold its remaining shares in 1985, maintaining a £1 golden share which allows it veto foreign control of the board or company.". Very Good+ .

Know the Soil You Build on (Information Bulletin 320)
Washington D. C.: U. S. Department of Agriculture, 1967. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is a larger than trade sized booklet with illustrated covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The text pages are clean and bright. This booklet helps homebuyers learn to check the type of soil before putting foundations down. "For soil resources, experience has shown that a natural system approach to classification, i. E. Grouping soils by their intrinsic property (soil morphology) , behaviour, or genesis, results in classes that can be interpreted for many diverse uses. Differing concepts of pedogenesis, and differences in the significance of morphological features to various land uses can affect the classification approach. Despite these differences, in a well-constructed system, classification criteria group similar concepts so that interpretations do not vary widely. This is in contrast to a technical system approach to soil classification, where soils are grouped according to their fitness for a specific use and their edaphic characteristics." (from Wikipedia). Soil Conservation at Home Tips for City and Suburban Dwellers
Washington D. C.: Department of Agriculture, 1962. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is an oblong paperback booklet with a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The booklet covers have some fading and light toning. The text pages are clean and bright. The front cover of the booklet has a previous owner's inked name. "Soil conservation is the prevention of soil loss from erosion or prevention of reduced fertility caused by over usage, acidification, salinization or other chemical soil contamination. Slash-and-burn and other unsustainable methods of subsistence farming are practiced in some lesser developed areas. A sequel to the deforestation is typically large scale erosion, loss of soil nutrients and sometimes total desertification. Techniques for improved soil conservation include crop rotation, cover crops, conservation tillage and planted windbreaks, affect both erosion and fertility. When plants die, they decay and become part of the soil. Code 330 defines standard methods recommended by the U. S. Natural Resources Conservation Service.". Very Good .
