The Professional Golfers' Association of America was established on April 10, 1916, but the genesis of the first all-professional golf body in the United States was sparked by a luncheon on January 17, 1916, hosted by Rodman Wanamaker at Wanamaker's Store on Ninth Street and Broadway in New York City. Sixty attendees were invited by the Taplow Club, which was a business group within Wanamaker's Store and led by professional Tom McNamara of Brookline, Massachusetts, an outstanding player and talented salesman who was keenly aware of the welfare of the club professional. McNamara pressed upon Wanamaker that it was prime time to bring U. S. Professionals together, and that the publicity generated would be advantageous. Locked into a retail battle with rival A. G. Spalding & Bros. For the sale of golf balls, Wanamaker enthusiastically approved the initiative. There are only three library markings on the booklet - one on the introduction page, another on the first page of the text, and one on the inside front cover. The rear cover of the book has a piece of paper (approx. 2" by 2") stuck to it. There is a tear to the top and bottom spine ends, about an inch on each edge. The text pages are generally clean, though the bottom edges of the pages have tidemarking. There is a previous owner's inked (and penciled) set of notations on the inside front cover. "Merit badges are designed to emphasize the ability “to do” rather than just knowledge. They were designed to “introduce a boy to life” including careers , hobbies, and other skills. In 2015, Signs, Signals, & Codes became the 135th current merit badge, Animation became the 136th current merit badge, and in 2016 Exploration became the 137th merit badge. Of these 137 merit badges, 26 remain from the group of 57 original merit badges from 1911, and 111 have been introduced since 1911. An additional 96 merit badges were created after 1911 that were subsequently dropped. So, all together, there have been a total of 264 different merit badges." (from Henning's Scouters' Pages).
