"Brian Wilson Aldiss OBE (18 August 1925 – 19 August 2017) was an English writer and anthology editor, best known for science fiction novels and short stories. His byline reads either Brian W. Aldiss or simply Brian Aldiss, except for occasional pseudonyms during the mid-1960s. Greatly influenced by science fiction pioneer H. G. Wells, Aldiss was a vice-president of the international H. G. Wells Society. He was (with Harry Harrison) co-president of the Birmingham Science Fiction Group. Aldiss was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 2000 and inducted by the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2004. He received two Hugo Awards, one Nebula Award, and one John W. Campbell Memorial Award. He wrote the short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long" (1969) , the basis for the Stanley Kubrick-developed Steven Spielberg film A. I. Artificial Intelligence (2001). Seasons in Flight
New York, NY: Atheneum, 1986. 1st American Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0689115385. This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Near Fine dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The dust jacket is crisp and clean. "On an island near Sumatra, south of the equator, the inhabitants await the arrival of a special flight - perhaps the very last flight to leave the northern hemisphere. It carries high-ranking American officials, needing sanctuary from the nuclear holocaust for which they are partly responsible. But the destruction of Science by itself has unleashed primal terrors. The ancient owner of the island makes his long-anticipated comeback." "After the war, he (Aldiss) worked as a bookseller in Oxford. He wrote a number of short pieces for a booksellers' trade journal about life in a fictitious bookshop, which attracted the attention of Charles Monteith, an editor at the British publisher Faber and Faber. As a result, Aldiss's first book was The Brightfount Diaries (Faber, 1955) , a 200-page novel in diary form about the life of a sales assistant in a bookshop. About this time he also began to write science fiction for various magazines. According to ISFDB his first speculative fiction in print was the short story Criminal Record, published by John Carnell in the July 1954 number of Science Fantasy. Several of his stories appeared in 1955 including three in monthly issues of New Worlds, a more important magazine also edited by Carnell. IN 1954, The Observer newspaper ran a competition for a short story set in the year 2500, Aldiss's story Not For An Age was ranked third following a reader vote. The Brightfount Diaries had been a minor success, and Faber asked Aldiss if he had any more writing that they could look at with a view to publishing. Aldiss confessed to being a science fiction author, to the delight of the publishers, who had a number of science fiction fans in high places, and so his first science fiction book was published, [citation needed] a collection of short stories entitled Space, Time and Nathaniel (Faber, 1957). By this time, his earnings from writing matched his wages in the bookshop, so he made the decision to become a full-time writer." from Wikipedia). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket .

"Using American Modernist writing of the 1920s as his lofty standard, Aldridge wrote of the creative dilemmas faced by those writers who arrived on the literary scene a generation later, yet still hoped to create fresh depictions of their experience. Reviewing new work as it appeared, he could be merciless in his evisceration of those who, in his view, failed to measure up. As he wrote memorably in 1951, the new writers "have learned that after the innovators come the specialists and after the specialists the imitators and that after a movement has spent itself there can only come the incestuous, the archaeologists, and the ghouls." "The Marine Raiders were special operations forces originally established by the United States Marine Corps during World War II to conduct amphibious light infantry warfare. "Edson's" Raiders of 1st Marine Raider Battalion and "Carlson's" Raiders of 2nd Marine Raider Battalion are said to have been the first United States special operations forces to form and see combat during World War II. Despite the original intent for Raiders to serve in a special operations capacity, most combat operations saw the Raiders employed as conventional infantry. This, combined with the resentment within the rest of the Marine Corps that the Raiders were an "elite force within an elite force", led to the original Raider units being disbanded. ALEXANDER, LUCY M. AND FANNY WALKER YEATMAN (U.S. DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE), Pork in Preferred Ways
ALEXANDER, LUCY M. AND FANNY WALKER YEATMAN (U.S. DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE)
Pork in Preferred Ways
Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1929. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Pamphlet. B&W Photographs; This is a four page pamphlet issued by the Dept of Agriculture featuring the uses of pork and includes 13 recipes. The pamphlet is in Good condition overall. Both top and bottom spine ends have separated and torn (the top spine is torn about an inch in depth, the bottom spine, somewhat more than an inch). There are several small edge nicks to the covers and the pamphlet has been folded in half at some point in time, leaving a crease. There is one tear to the spine of the pamphlet which travels inward about half an inch. A previous owner has penciled in a few notation (underlined the titles of the recipes and notated that there are 13 recipes, otherwise, the text is clean and bright). The pamphlet itself is on off white / possibly cream colored paper which has darkened somewhat. Recipes include Panned Pork Chops, Stuffed Rib Chops with Apples, Pork Chop Suey, and others. The lettering on the front cover and for the decorations on the interior are Art Deco in style. This is an interesting ephemeral piece and rather difficult to find in any condition. "Pork makes up nearly half of the meat eaten in the United States. Although most of the pork reaches the consumer as cured ham, shoulder, bacon, and other preserved products, modern refrigerating methods make possible an abundant supply of the fresh meat at all seasons."
