Good copy, very good interior. ~ FIRST EDITION. Jean Baptiste Say (1767-1832), French economist. Was appointed to a post in Napoleon's government in 1799, later was a professor of political economy at the Collège de France. Say edited the journal "La Décade", in which he wrote many articles promoting the ideas of Adam Smith. Say's Law, the law of markets, whereby supply creates its own demand for goods, went unchallenged for a long time. His extensive writings include his first major book, "Traité d'économie politique" (1803; English translation 1821); "Catéchisme d'économie politique" (1815); and "Course complet d'économie politique pratique" (1828). HARDCOVER, uniformly bound in handsome contemporary half polished calf and speckled boards; spines gilt ruled, each with a cherry-red, gilt morocco title-label, and oval, gilt-and-black morocco volume-number label, set within gilt-embossed wreath, embroidered ribbon marker to each volume. Paper over inner hinges of volume I split, not affecting binding which remains firm and tight; some annotations in light coloured pencil in one volume. In about fine condition. A very handsome set. ~ The present set is the corrected issue, published without the now redundant 5 errata slips (one to each volume) and conforms to Einaudi's 5340 description. Adam Smith's (1723-1790) work is the first major expression of organized study of social wealth. "'The Wealth of Nations' is not a system, but as a provisional analysis it is completely convincing. The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought." (PMM 221). The present, much admired French translation of Smith's "Wealth of Nations", by the French poet and economist Comte Germain Garnier (1754-1821), became the standard, definitive French text. (Palgrave 1894-1901). Garnier's elegant Preface to this edition contains a summary of the doctrine of Smith, a comparison between the same and that of French economists, and a parallel between the wealth of France and that of England. It was first published in London in 1802 as "An Enquiry into the Nature and Effects of the Paper Credit of Great Britain and Serious Reflections on Paper Money in General". Henry Thornton (1760-1815), English merchant and banker. Was director of the Bank of England, and for 30 years member of Parliament. In his "Enquiry" he systemized ideas on money, circulation, interest, price, and employment. Though very successful in his own day, the "Enquiry" was gradually forgotten until Hollander, Viner, and others rediscovered it and drew attention to its anticipations of modern monetary theory. Excellent wide-margined, untrimmed copy, preserved in the original state and with crisp folding plates. ~ FIRST EDITION. Based on a much quoted manuscript note in the Library of Congress' copy ("l'on croit que cette sanglante diatribe des fermiers généraux a été composée, imprimée et répandue sous les auspices du ministère actuel [celui de Turgot & Malesherbes]") the book is often attributed to Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot, Baron de l'Aulne (1727-1781), controller-general of France under Louis XVI. However, the attribution to Turgot is doubtful if not false. (For that matter see: Quérard: La France littéraire. Paris, Bibliothèque National, Catalogue géneral des livres imprimés; and also: Higgs, H. Bibliography of economics, 6403.) Made original and important contributions to economics, notably in his book "Der natürliche Werth" (1889) - also offered by Librarium - which brought him international recognition.
