"Arise! ye pimpled, tipling race, arise! / From ev'ry town and village tavern come! / Show your red noses, and o'erflowing eyes / And help your poet chant the praise of rum.." "Hail mighty rum! to thee, the wretched fly ; / And find a sweet oblivion of their woes!" .. "Hail, mighty Rum! what can thy power withstand! / E'en lordly reason flies thy dreadful face; / And health, and joy, and all the lovely band / Of social virtues, shun thy dwelling place: / (For in whatever breast it rears its throne, / Like turkish monarchs, rum must rule alone.)" Rum and drinking appear to be a theme as there is also a poem titled "Ode To Rum" at the bottom of two of the daily almanac pages. RARE. Good .

Stassen, Harold. (1907-2001). American politician who was the 25th Governor of Minnesota. He gained a reputation as a perennial candidate by running numerous times for president as well as for other offices.
Typed Letter to Governor of Maryland Spiro T. Agnew Signed by Harold E. Stassen Enclosing a Copy of Stassen's Statement to Be Presented at the 1968 Republican Convention.
Piladelphia, PA: July 25, 1968, 1968. - Letter filling one side of his 10-3/8 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide personalized letterhead with a Fidelity Building address printed at the top. Signed "Harold E. Stassen". Together with a 14-page copy of Stassen's "Statement to the Resolutions Committee" to be presented at the Republican National Convention in Miami on July 29th. Also present is a carbon copy of Agnew's reply. Agnew has penciled "Art" [Art Sohmer, his Chief-of Staff] in the top right corner of the letter. Below Stassen's letter Agnew has penciled notes indicating how he wants the letter to be answered. On the verso is an official stamp showing the date the letter was received. Folded twice for mailing. The bottom left corners of the statement pages are creased. The 3 items were once stapled together at top left. Very good. Stassen congratulates Agnew on his Chairmanship of the Maryland delegation to the Republican National Convention in Miami. He sends Agnew a copy of the statement Staasen is to present to the Resolutions Committee at the Convention on July 29th in case Agnew might want to refer to it. If it turned out to be "appropriate and agreeable for me to meet with the Maryland delegation, I would be glad to do so". He pens a P.S. "You made a lot of sense at Cincinnati!". [Agnew gave a speech at the National Governors' Conference in Cincinnatti, Ohio on July 23, 1968]. Stassen's statement concerns the Vietnam War. He believes it was a big mistake for Johnson and Humphrey to get America so deeply involved in the war and sets out his ideas for how the country should be extricated from this crisis. Harold Stassen [1907-2001] was an American politician who was the 25th Governor of Minnesota. He was the leading Republican candidate for U.S. President in 1948 and considered for a time to be the front-runner. Thereafter he ran for president numerous times, including in 1968, as well as for other offices, and gained a reputation as a perennial candidate. Very good .
