Saunders graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1854. He was a colonel in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War and later was appointed Secretary of State. From 1869-1870 Saunders was the principal organizer of the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina. Saunders Hall on the university campus was named to honor him. Over the last two decades pressure was put on the Board of Trustees by students and Saunders Hall was renamed "Carolina Hall" in 2015. The collection at hand is particularly associated with Saunders in view of his role as a historian and editor of the ten-volume "Colonial Records of North Carolina". Above the handwritten title is a light blue ownership stamp, "M. M. Marshall". Matthias Murray Marshall was a Confederate Army lieutenant and chaplain during the Civil War. After the war he became the historiographer of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. Fair .
