Btn. Cambridgeshire Regiment in April 1939, as mobilised in August, spent the next two years on defence duties in Norfolk and training before being sent to the Middle East and diverted to defend Singapore, arriving in time to defend the north coast of the island in January 1942. The Japanese invaded on 8th February and after some fierce fighting in which the author was injured came the news that British troops were to lay down their arms. Then follows a narrative of over three years as a POW first at Changi then to the camp at Chungkai in Thailand building bridges for the railway, spells in hospital with dysentery, further work as a medical orderly, as a regimental policeman before other work parties at Takunum, Bondei and Tamuang, the Japanese surrender in August 1945 and the gradual relief by air before repatriation, slightly cocked, lightly rubbed at tips, edges a little taned, dustwrapper: lightly rubbed at extrems., very good in a very good dustwrapper,
