Btn. Cambridgeshire Regiment in April 1939, as mobilised in August, spent the next two years on defence duties in Norfolk and training before being sent to the Middle East and diverted to defend Singapore, arriving in time to defend the north coast of the island in January 1942. The Japanese invaded on 8th February and after some fierce fighting in which the author was injured came the news that British troops were to lay down their arms.
