Kinglake, A. W.
The Invasion of the Crimea: Its Origin, and an Account of Its Progress Down to the Death of Lord Raglan. ; Complete Eight Volume Set
Edinburgh and London, William Blackwood and Sons, 1887. Leather Bound. Royal 8vo. Finely bound in 3/4 polished leather. All folding maps, maps, and illustrations are present. The bottom edges of the boards of each volume are rubbed and there is some rubbing to the leading edges of the boards. The top of the spine of volume VIII is a bit abraded. A few spots of rubbing to the spines, but it is not untoward. Bindings tight throughout - no broken hinges. Contents clean. Overall, most handsome in appearance. Alexander William Kinglake (1809-1891) was educated at Eton and Cambridge. After doing the 'Grand Tour' he joined the Inns of Court and became a barrister. In 1854, he followed the British expedition to the Crimea, and was present at the Battle of Alma, and was subsequently invited by Lady Raglan to write the history of the campaign. Volumes I and II first appeared in 1863, volumes III and IV in 1868, volume V in 1875, volume VI in 1880, and volumes VII and VIII in 1887. The DNB notes that 'his history [was] marked by literary ability and skill in dealing with technical matters'. Our offering is a 'made-up' set consisting of mixed editions which were ultimately rebound uniformly in three-quarter polished calf over marbled boards with matching endpapers, five raised bands, and the top edge gilt. Volumes I and II are 5th editions (1874); volumes III and IV are 3rd editions (1884 and 1885); and volumes V, VI, VII, VIII are first editions (1875, 1880, 1887); so presumably this set was made up and re-bound shortly after 1887. Ill.: maps, illustrations.

'Lawrence, T. E.'
Revolt in the Desert
New York City, George H. Doran Company, 1927. Hardcover. pp. xvi, 335. Royal 8vo. Bound in original grey red buckram with black stamped lettering. 16 plates, folding map. Faint cup 'ring' on rear bd, some scuffing & soiling, binding sl. cracked. Former owner's name on front pastedown. The dust jacket has been price-clipped and has pieces missing at the top and bottom of the spine. It is also a bit creased and scuffed, and is in fair condition. Folding map at rear is in excellent condition. This is the first American trade edition, published at the same time as the Jonathan Cape first British trade edition, both after the limited edition published the same year. Issued in dull pink buckram, or as O'Brien A107 describes it: 'grey red buckram'. Although the copyright page states 'First printing in America, March, 1927', this is a later printing, as it lacks the GHD 'lozenge' on the verso of the title page. A prudent prospective purchaser should always confirm the presence of this important point when considering the purchase of a copy described as a 'first American edition'. Ill.: 16 plates, folding map.

'LAWRENCE, T. E'
Revolt in the Desert
Garden City, NY, Garden City Publishing. reprint. Hardcover. 335 pp. 8vo. Bound in brown woven cloth with vignette stamped on front board. Slight discolouration to the top left of the front board, light general shelf wear. tiny tear to the bottom of the rear hinge; very good. The folding map is present and in near fine condition. The uncommon dust jacket (similar to that encasing the first American edition) is present, although it is torn and creased, and now in about fair condition. Illustrations by Augustus John and others. A smaller format edition of the 1927 Doran 1st American edition. O'Brien A190 identifies this as the third American edition, and notes that 'There are many printings of this edition and no effective means of determining priority of issue' (p. 101). However, it appears that the earliest issues were bound in what O'Brien describes as 'rough cloth binding', with a blind stamped rectangle on the front board. We have seen many different copies of this edition of this title, and this particular copy is bound as O'Brien describes, and is thus an early, or possibly, first printing of the third edition. Most of our other copies are similarly bound, but in smooth brown cloth, with no blind-stamped rectangle. Thus, we present this as a very early issue of the third American edition. Ill.: b&w drawings, folding map.
