The second went to Greenland in search of Andrée's balloon expedition but without any success. A speech given at the Swedish Royal Academy of Science about the Zeno brothers' travels and the oldest maps of Northern Europe. Today the Zeno brothers are mainly famous for a map (Zeno map) and a set of letters written around the end of the 14th century describing their voyages of exploration throughout the North Atlantic. The letters and the map are controversial and regarded by many historians as a hoax.

Contemporary full calf, spine with five raised bands, richly gilt and with title label, corners worn, hinges weak and partly cracked, spine ends nicely restored. Stamp (Museum d'Hist. Na.) on title. First edition of this wellknown account of the French scientific expedition headed by Maupertius to the north of Sweden in 1736-37. Reginaud Outhier (1694-1774), French priest, participated as the astronomer on the expedition. His account comprises a personal journal with descriptive details of the area and its inhabitants. Rasmus Rask, famous Danish linguist who was one of the founders of comparative linguistics. In this work, Rask established an orthography based on the principle of a single grapheme for each sound, that is, it should be a phonemic orthography. All the Northern Sami orthographies developed since 1832 trace their roots back to Rask's system. Porsanger is a municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. It has been inhabited by Norwegians and Sami people since ancient times. In the 18th century people from Finland settled along the Porsanger river (Kven people). Vater p. 216.

Signe Rink (1836-1909) was born in Greenland where her father was the colonial administrator. At the age of 17 she married Hinrich Rink, a Danish geologist who became the colonial director of southern Greenland in Nuuk in 1858. She learned the language fluently and wrote novels and short stories about Inuit society and traditions, and translated Greenlandic folklore into Danish. Several of her books reflected on the colonial relationship between Inuits and Danes.
