Contemporary half calf on marbled paper boards, rubbed, no endpapers. Bookplate and old inscriptions on front paste down. David Cranz (1723-77) was a German missionary in the Moravian United Brethen. He is mainly known for his works on Greenland. Cranz joined the Moravian church in 1741 and joined to the inner circle of the sect. This work describes the beliefs and practices of the Moravian church and the interesting plates depict various ceremonies such as baptism, marriage, exorcism, ordination, etc. Other plates show the missionary work among American Indians, Greenlanders and black slaves in the West Indies. He was a Danish-Norwegian missionary and scholar who at a young age moved to Greenland with his family. His father Hans Poulsen Egede, known as the Apostle of Greenland, started the missionary work in Greenland in 1721. First edition of the scientific results of the Swedish Svalbard expedition of 1882-83 headed by Nils Ekholm. It contains information about meteorology, geomagnetism, and auroral studies together with an historical report of the activities and events during the expedition. For the International Polar Year of 1882-3 the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, with government and private backing, sponsored an expedition to establish a scientific station in Mosselbukta on the North Coast of Spitsbergen. Due to heavy ice that season an alternative site at Cap Thordsen on the north shore of Isfjorden was used. Otho Fabricius was a Danish missionary who lived in the colony of Fredrikshaab in Greenland between 1768 and 1773. He was a student of another renowned missionary Paul Egede.
