Contemporary full calf, flat spines decorated in gilt and with title labels, expertly rebacked with original spines preserved. Corners slightly rubbed. Bookplate. First edition of this important work on the Tonga Islands. William Mariner was a British sailor on the ¬Port au Prince¬ that was attacked and destroyed on arrival at the Ha'apai Islands in Tonga. Mariner, the only survivor, was adopted as the King's son. He spent four years on the islands learning about the life, customs and language of Tonga. He returned to England in 1810. His account is "considered the best report of Tongan life and culture before the arrival of Christianity" Hill 1075. Cf Kroepelien 819 (second edition).

First English edition which preceded the first German edition (Vienna 1856). Ida Pfeiffer (1797-1858) was the very first woman full-time traveller. She was born in Vienna in 1797 and at the age of 45, after raising two children and with a husband living away from home, she began to travel. The rest of her life she spent either travelling or preparing to travel. Her travels became increasingly adventurous as she ventured further and further off the beaten tourist track. Translation of the first seven chapters of the Book of Daniel and the whole of the book of Jonah. Another edition, previously published in the same year, only contains the first six chapters of the Book of Daniel and the Book of Jonah. (See Williams).The mission at Paihia (Bay of Islands) was established in 1826, which soon became very active. The printing press arrived at Paihia in December 1834 together with William Colenso, missionary and botanist who operated the successful press for many years. William Gilbert Puckey (1805-78) arrived in New Zealand with his parents at the age of fourteen, learned the Ma›ri language and became an useful translator. Contemporary speckled calf, spine richly gilt with five raised bands and title-labels, somewhat rubbed. Marbled end papers, r.e. French edition of Sparrman's travels in South Africa translated from the English version by Le Tourneur. In 1772 Anders Sparrman, a Swedish naturalist, travelled around the Cape Province for several years and in this account he reports about the plants, animals and inhabitants of the country. While he was there he was invited to participate in Cook's second voyage in the Resolution as assistant to the Forsters, the botanists on the expedition.
