. Pp. (viii), 376, (16). With twelve engraved botanical plates (one of a fish). Contemporary half calf, worn. Hinges weak and partly split, spine ends worn. Partly with some browning. First edition. Comprises reports by two Swedish naturalists and disciples of Carl von Linné about their voyages to China between 1750 and 1752.Pehr Osbeck served as a chaplain on a Swedish East India voyage to Canton where he spent about four months in 1751. The expedition sailed by way of Spain, the Canary Islands, the Cape of Good Hope and Java. Osbeck's account includes detailed and accurate information about plants, fish, insects, birds and other animals along the route. A large collection of newly discovered plants in China and Java was brought back and given to Linné. Osbeck's diary also includes accurate and interesting details about the people in China and their manners, language, food, religion, agriculture, commerce, etc. The second work comprises TorénÕs narrative of an East India voyage via Surat to China which was published posthumously by Linné. Torén writes about his visit to Madagascar with descriptions of the people and different kinds of fruits, trees, plants, lemurs, etc. Many pages are devoted to the stay in Surat, the important Indian seaport at this time. Including valuable descriptions of the inhabitants, housing, customs, religion, language, clothing and also much about trade and merchandise. The voyage continues to Malacca before reaching Macao and Canton. Torén vividly describes life and trade at the factories at Guangzhou (Canton) which then was the centre of Chinese trade for the outside world. Ekeberg's separately printed account of an East India voyage to China, sometimes with bound, is not present here. Cordier BS 2097. Löwendahl 491. Pritzel 6865. Schildt, Linnés lärjungar, pp. 99-144. PRÉMARE, JOSEPH HENRY MARIE DE:
Notitia linguae sinicae. Hongkong, La Société des Missions Étrangères, 1894.
. Pp. 255. Original printed wrappers with some minor staining and chipped along edges. Paper crease in the beginning of the book. De Prémare was a Jesuit missionary who served in Guangxi in the beginning of the 18th century. In 1724 when the Emperor virtually banned Christianity over the Chinese Rites controversy, Prémare had to leave for Guangzhou and later went to Macau where he died in 1739. He became one of the most significant sinologists of his time and his principal work "Notitia linguae sinicae" is considered the most important Chinese grammar in a European language of the time. It explains the rules and usage of the vulgar Chinese language (siao shue) and the style of the written, literary language (wen tschang). The renowned English sinologist James Legge calls it "an invaluable work, which it could hardly be possible to speak in too high terms". (See Catholic Encyclopedia). It was not published until 100 years later in Malacca in 1831. The Ms was sent to Stephanus Fourmont who himself published a grammar, apparently deliberately delaying the publication of Prémare's work. This is a later, also rare edition. Cordier BS 1669. Cf Vater p. 68.

. Small 4to. Pp. (xxiv), 423, 428-559, (5) table. Text complete. With title printed in red and black. Narrow margins. Rebound with old paper boards, new calf spine with five raised bands, decorated and lettered in gilt. Text partly browned due to the paper quality. Second French edition, translated by David Florice de Riquebourg-Trigault, nephew of Nicolas and physician to the count of Nassau. First published in Latin titled "De Christiana expeditione apud sinas suspecta ab Societate Jesu", Augsburg 1615. This important work on China is based on the journal kept by the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci during the time he served in the country (1582-1610). When Ricci arrived in 1582 in Macau, China was still closed to outsiders, but he learned the language, acquired knowledge about the country, and was able to go beyond cultural barriers which gave him entrance to the interior of country. He discovered that Chinese culture was strongly intertwined with Confucian values and therefore used existing Chinese concepts to explain Christianity. Ricci's manuscript was brought back to Europe by his successor Trigault, who translated it into Latin and also changed many passages of the journal and augmented it with information based on several Portuguese missionary reports.
