Bookplate (Piper, Sövdeborg). The beautiful engravings illustrate the life and deeds of Confucius engraved by Helman (1743-1806). They are copied from a set of Chinese miniatures which were sent by the Jesuit missionary Amiot in Peking to Bertin, who was Louis xiv's minister and the one in charge of France's relation with China. This is an example of how the "chinoiseries" was spreading within Europe in the late 18th century. Some light staining throughout but overall a very good copy. Cohen 262. Cordier BS 667. Rare first edition.,A translation of Tai T'ung's "Liu shu ku" or "The History of the Six Writings" is one of the most important classical readings in Chinese philosophy. It was written in the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279). Hopkins provides an introduction to the principles of Chinese character formation and the arrangement of "Liu shu ku", and further explains the relationship between sound, form and meaning. Lionel Charles Hopkins was a British Sinologist who lived in China between 1871 and 1908.Provenance: Walter Perceval Yetts (1878-1957), a British surgeon and sinologist. He translated the Scriptures into dialects of remote tribes. We believe this work was only issued in a small number. "The coarse paper was made from local material, often from leaves of the desert iris, and the format was the usual style of Chinese book, with each sheet written on one side only and folded back to back ... George Hunter had succeeded in buying a second- or third- hand duplicating machine, and a skilled writer transcribed the Turki text on the waxed stencil sheet while Hunter wrote out the English translation below."
