Les lignages anglais y côtoient des familles de peintres, de sculpteurs, de verriers ou d'orfèvres venus de toute l'Europe, et plus particulièrement des Pays-Bas. L'objet de cet ouvrage est donc de retracer la vie professionnelle et familiale de ce petit monde, ses relations avec ses clients, notamment le roi. In the panorama of sixteenth century Italian art, Veronese is the profane painter par excellence, in that he encapsulates both of the great pictorial traditions that most influenced the history of sixteenth century secular painting: the Tuscan-Roman tradition and the Venetian tradition.
