¶ In de reeks: Middeleeuwse Verzamelhandschriften uit de Nederlanden. Met zijn 346 folia is het Comburgse handschrift waarschijnlijk het omvangrijkste handschrift met alleen Middelnederlandse teksten. Een aanzienlijk deel daarvan is alleen in dit handschrift overgeleverd, zoals bijvoorbeeld de Rijmkroniek van Vlaanderen, Jan de Weerts Dispitacie van Rogiere ende van Janne, de Middelnederlandse vertaling van de Facetus (Van Zeden), Sente Bernardus epistele, enkele prozastukken en een groot aantal sproken. Met uitzondering van de Rijmkroniek kunnen de teksten voor het merendeel onder de noemer 'didactisch-moralistisch' worden gebracht. Verder is het handschrift natuurlijk vooral bekend door teksten als Van den vos Reynaerde en Van sente Brandane. Hoewel de uit zes delen bestaande Comburgse codex, naar het zich laat aanzien, niet van meet af aan als materiële eenheid zal zijn bedoeld, is er toch alle aanleiding om een integrale uitgave van dit handschrift op te nemen in de reeks Middeleeuwse Verzamelhandschriften uit de Nederlanden. Niet alleen zijn er in dit convoluut een vijftal verzamelhandschriften samengebracht (aangevuld met een handschrift waarin slechts één tekst voorkomt), maar ook kunnen er tal van overeenkomsten en raakvlakken worden aangewezen tussen de afzonderlijke delen. In de inleiding wordt uitvoerig ingegaan op de ontstaans- en overleveringsgeschiedenis van het handschrift en op de verhouding tussen de samenstellende delen.

De rijkste en meest veelsoortige collectie Middelnederlandse teksten die we kennen, is bewaard gebleven in een vermoedelijk te Brussel ontstaan handschrift uit het begin van de vijftiende eeuw. Naar zijn negentiende-eeuwse eigenaar Charles van Hulthem kreeg het de roepnaam handschrift-Van Hulthem. Zowel naar de omvang (212 teksten of tekstcollecties) als naar de inhoud is het handschrift buitengewoon. Bekend is het vooral doordat het de tien oudste toneelspelen uit ons taalgebied bevat, met daaronder vier 'abele spelen', de vroegst bekende ernstige wereldlijke spelen uit de Europese letterkunde. Toch vormen deze teksten slechts een klein deel van de inhoud. Opmerkelijk is vooral de grote inhoudelijke verscheidenheid. Meer dan in enig ander handschrift vinden we er namelijk stad en hof, wereldlijk en geestelijk, rijm en proza, lang en kort in bonte mengeling dooreen: getijden en gebeden, al dan niet berijmd, pikante vertellingen, verzamelingen van honderden rijmspreuken, liefdesbrieven, hoofse sproken, samenspraken, een verslag van een mirakel, een routebeschrijving, excerpten uit een ridderoman, liederen, sommige zelfs met muzieknotatie, fabels en ga zo maar door. The Masters of the Dark Eyes. Late Medieval Manuscript Painting in Holland

¶ This study deals with the work of the most prolific Dutch book illuminators, the so-called Masters of the Dark Eyes, named after the most conspicuous aspect of their style: the dark, heavily accentuated shadows round the eyes of the figures. With their elaborately illuminated manuscripts, these masters completely dominated book production in the County of Holland during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Their work is characterized by an overwhelming wealth of decorative and pictorial richness, which is especially evident in the unusually ornate programmes of the Books of Hours, and a new type of border decoration derived from the Ghent-Bruges School. This style of painting was practised by many artists of differing talents, as demonstrated by the large number of surviving manuscripts. Not all of the illuminators worked in Holland. Some of them settled in the Southern Netherlands, others emigrated to England, where they illuminated manuscripts for members of the English court. This monograph seeks to order, analyze and evaluate the work of the Masters of the Dark Eyes, and to position their achievements within the context of book illumination in the Northern Netherlands during the 'Waning of the Middle Ages'. It explores a virtually uncharted territory of Dutch manuscript painting. The accompanying descriptive catalogue provides complementary information on more than 70 manuscripts, many of which have never been published at length before. The work is illustrated with a wide selection of colour and black-and-white reproductions.
