¶ Elke dag dringen nieuwe uitvindingen op vlak van de media door in de samenleving. Dit boek analyseert hoe een buitenlandse technische uitvinding, met name het medium film, een eeuw geleden (1894-1908) in België een eigen structuur, het bioscoopwezen, heeft kunnen ontwikkelen. Hiervoor wordt een sociaal-culturele invalshoek gehanteerd, die de filmexploitant maatschappelijk situeert en de filmvertoning in een culturele context plaatst. In een eerste deel staan de eerste Belgische ondernemers-industriëlen centraal, die Edisons kinetoscoop, Lumières cinematograaf en Gautiers zoögraaf voor de eeuwwisseling hebben gecommercialiseerd. Niet zij, maar voornamelijk binnen- en buitenlandse variété- en kermisartiesten, blijken succesvol. In een tweede deel (1898-1908) wordt nagegaan of deze tot de eerste ontwikkelingsfasen van het bioscoopwezen behoren: van de kermistent naar de variété-zaal. In het afsluitende gedeelte (1905-1908) komen de eerste bioscoophouders aan bod met hun affiniteiten in de variété- en kermiswereld, in de internationale zakenwereld, en in het café- en brouwerijwezen, hetgeen het bestaan van de talrijke café-cinés verklaart. Leuven University Press 2007 The art of illumination, usually associated with the Middle Ages, experienced a spectacular revival in nineteenth-century Western Europe. This completely different context gave the illuminations another import. The output of the lay and religious workshops reveals a great artistic, stylistic, technical and typological diversity. The works illuminated go far beyond the world of exceptional and precious manuscripts and include many occasional documents, as well as golden books, devotional images, etc. Richly illustrated with unpublished masterworks, the present volume offers an overview of the important revival of medieval illumination. The fifteen authors do not limit their approach to the traditional questions of art history. Rather, they explore the historical, socio-cultural, ideological and religious components of the revival, which changed according to time and country, in order to understand the evolution and success of the art of illumination in the long nineteenth century. L’art de l’enluminure, bien connu pour le Moyen Âge, fit l’objet d’un regain d’intérêt spectaculaire au XIXe siècle. Le contexte résolument différent leur confère toutefois une autre signification.
