¶ Martavan is the name used to refer to a group of big stoneware or highly fired earthenware storage jars. The name can be traced to the important entrepot port of Martaban in Burma. Martaban was an active base from whence the Chinese wares were shipped to the Near East, India and Africa during the Sung and Ming dynasties and it was at Martaban that these big jars were first observed by Westerbners. Early Western writers on the porcelain trade route called a wide number of ceramic products 'Martavans' after the port. The popular Indonesian name for martavans is tempayan, a name which originates from 'tempat tape' the containers in which the local fermenting rice or cassava is made. Martabani jars have now become decorative pieces in the modern home and their value has soared as the factor of antiquity comes into play. Beyond this, especially among the peoples of Sarawak and the Philippine Archipelago, some jars accredited with magical powers, have become priceless.

¶ Aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw tot het midden van de twintigste eeuw was Wolfers een begrip. De naam stond synoniem voor luxe, kwaliteit en hoogstaande artisticiteit van Belgische origine. De firma Wolfers, producent van zilverwerk en juwelen, werd in 1850 in Brussel opgericht door Louis Wolfers. Vooral onder het beleid van zijn zonen Philippe, Max en Robert kon de zaak zich internationaal profileren en verwierf zij belangrijke afzetmarkten in West- en Midden-Europa. De objecten in art-nouveau stijl ontworpen door Philippe Wolfers werden met veel lofbetuigingen ontvangen. Zijn unieke art-nouveau juwelen werden getoond in heel Europa en de naam van Philippe Wolfers evenaarde die van René Lalique. Na het overlijden van Philippe in 1929 volgde zijn zoon Marcel hem op als artistiek directeur en profileerde deze zich als een begenadigde beeldhouwer en begaafde lakkunstenaar. Dit rijk geïllustreerde boek is het resultaat van jarenlang onderzoek. ¶ Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages are now understood as times of extraordinary skill and creativity in the decorative arts. In the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium) artists and craftsmen transitioned from 'Roman' to 'Byzantine' art and inspired a move from naturalism to a more hieratic and symbolic style, drawing on the deep artistic links connecting the Mediterranean world and the East. The many spectacular artefacts from this period in the Wyvern Collection are luxury objects, most commissioned by wealthy patrons or the Church, ranging in date from the fourth century to around 1300. Masterpieces of great significance for art history, including a 5th-century Artemis missorium, previously unpublished, and an 11th-century enamelled enkolpion from Constantinople are among the highlights of the collection. Other extraordinary objects - Late Roman chariot decorations, a stone funerary door from Syria and brooches brought across Europe by the families of Roman soldiers - complete this artistic panorama of the great Mediterranean and Persian civilizations, whose creative influence extended to the far west of the Islamic world. The catalogue, by Byzantine metalwork expert Marco Aimone, is augmented by three essays from technical specialists: Jack Ogden (enamelling), Peter Northover (metallurgy) and Erica Cruikshank Dodd (hallmarks). Rika Gyselen also contributes readings of Persian inscriptions.

Daarnaast tracht dit boek een antwoord te geven op de vraag of al het Delfts Wit daadwerkelijk in Delft is vervaardigd. Delfts wit werd en wordt ook nu nog vaak, als alledaags gebruiksgoed gezien. Maar het vormde ook een favoriet thema in de beeldende kunst...Op menig schilderij uit de zeventiende eeuw, maar ook in latere tijd, glanst Delfts wit ons tegemoet, vaak voorzien van een zilveren deksel. De vraag is waarom 'eenvoudige' witte gebruiksvoorwerpen zo geliefd waren bij stilleven schilders. Reçu maître ébéniste en 1708, il s'installa au faubourg Saint- Germain. Protégé par la maison de Condé, il obtint le titre d'ébéniste de la Reine en 1725 et fut, jusqu'à sa mort, le principal fournisseur de meubles d'ébénisterie du Garde-Meuble de la Couronne. Grand maître de l'ébénisterie française du XVIIIe siècle, il réalisa pour Louis XV, la commode de la chambre du Roi à Choisy, ainsi que le médaillier et la bibliothèque du cabinet du Roi à Versailles. Conçue en collaboration avec deux restaurateurs, cette monographie inédite constitue l'étude la plus complète menée jusqu'à ce jour sur cet ébéniste d'exception.
