Rare antique Asian and Colonial Decorative Arts: Michael Backman Ltd.

¶ The decorative arts of South and Southeast Asia, and especially those of the 18th and 19th centuries, and trade items produced during the same period, constitute a much neglected area. Such items, which in a Europeanised context tend to be labelled objets de vertu, are under-represented in public and private collections. While the decorative arts of later Western Europe and North America might be strongly represented, when it comes to South and Southeast Asia, there is a bias towards the ancient, the religious and the sculptural. And yet the decorative arts of Asia of recent centuries is a more accessible and tangible field for many. The relative attractiveness of more recent Asian decorative arts, for which provenance issues need not be so acute, grows as the movement of archaeological and other early material across international borders becomes ever-more complex and problematic, be it for commercial or for exhibition purposes. The objects presented here - ranging from ornate handled daggers and exquisite silver filigree boxes to diamond studded jewels and magnificent embroidered silk - are all of exceptional quality and are often incredibly rare. A carved ivory pendant most probably made in China c.1600 for the European market is exceptionally rare and probably unique. The catalogue also includes a selection of items usually designated as 'tribal' art. Many of these have a decorative as much as a ritualistic component. Among the objects from Nigeria are a stunning 19th-century processional staff, topped with the figure of a queen, two museum-quality divination bowls carved by master craftsmen, and a striking and possibly unique five-headed dance costume. Most have been sourced from old UK and European collections, and most are likely to have been collected during the colonial era. This is important. Overwhelmingly, most 'tribal' art items available commercially today are reproduction pieces and have no place in serious collections.

¶ Ria Bosman's body of work spans four decades. Like all abstract art, her work does not depict anything other than its presence as an object. Her woven pieces are minimal, geometric, and repetitive. Coloured strips of flax are tightly woven into flat tapestries, and only show a play of straight lines and rectangular planes, or small monochrome works that consist of pieces of leather glued together with paint; they form prolonged, recurring series in her oeuvre. Silent witnesses of: nothing. Yet her works resist a negative description with all their might, they are: something. They represent the hope that bright artifacts can emerge from the unknown visible, in order to contemplate that unknown, Untitled.

¶ De Dam, de grachten, de kerken en pleinen, de Amstel en het IJ: het is allemaal onmiskenbaar Amsterdam. De tekeningen uit de achttiende eeuw laten een bijzonder levendige stad zien. Kunstenaars als Jacob Cats, Reinier Vinkeles, H.P. Schouten en Jan de Beijer namen de tijd om hun omgeving tot in detail te vereeuwigen. Het getekende stadsgezicht maakte een ongeëvenaarde bloei door en geen andere plek werd zo vaak getekend als Amsterdam. We zien een stad waar wordt gehandeld en gewandeld, waar koetsen en karren ratelen over de keien en schuiten worden volgeladen. In de Eeuw van de Rede - een relatief welvarende tijd - groeide de behoefte om de stad en haar inwoners zo precies mogelijk te documenteren. Dat heeft geresulteerd in talloze tekeningen, vaak in prachtige kleuren. ¶ Catalogus bij een expositie van landschapstekeningen en stadsgezichten van Rembrandt. Rembrandt was een begenadigd tekenaar en etser van stadsgezichten en landschappen. Onderzoek in de Amsterdamse archieven heeft aangetoond dat de meeste daarvan nauwkeurig zijn te lokaliseren in en rondom de stad waar hij het grootste deel van zijn leven heeft gewoond. In dit boek wordt Rembrandt met zijn vrienden en leerlingen gevolgd vanuit Amsterdam over de middeleeuwse dijkwegen naar de omliggende dorpen: langs het open IJ naar Diemen, langs de Amstel naar Ouderkerk, of naar de duinen bij Bloemendaal. Rembrandt portretteerde zowel de stad zelf - grachten, torens, het oude stadhuis - als de dorpsgezichten, landwegen, boerderijen en molens in de omgeving. Hij koos daarbij meestal de traditionele schilderachtige routes. Ook Jacob van Ruisdael en andere tijdgenoten hebben deze populaire plaatsen bezocht en getekend. Rembrandts eigen visie wordt daarom steeds vergeleken met de interpretaties van tijdgenoten en met andere historische bronnen. Rembrandts tekeningen komen daarbij naar voren als echte egodocumenten. Ze onthullen niet alleen zijn opvattingen over tekenkunst, maar ook wat hem aantrok of tegenstond in het landschap van zijn tijd. Tegelijkertijd kon Rembrandt met nauwelijks merkbare ingrepen een eenvoudig landschappelijk gegeven kenschetsen op een manier die het eeuwigheidswaarde geeft. Het landschap van Rembrandt is een standaardwerk zowel voor het Rembrandtonderzoek als voor de landschapsgeschiedenis van Amsterdam en omgeving.

In dit boek wordt Rembrandt met zijn vrienden en leerlingen gevolgd vanuit Amsterdam over de middeleeuwse dijkwegen naar de omliggende dorpen: langs het open IJ naar Diemen, langs de Amstel naar Ouderkerk, of naar de duinen bij Bloemendaal. Rembrandt portretteerde zowel de stad zelf - grachten, torens, het oude stadhuis - als de dorpsgezichten, landwegen, boerderijen en molens in de omgeving. Hij koos daarbij meestal de traditionele schilderachtige routes. Ook Jacob van Ruisdael en andere tijdgenoten hebben deze populaire plaatsen bezocht en getekend. Rembrandts eigen visie wordt daarom steeds vergeleken met de interpretaties van tijdgenoten en met andere historische bronnen. Rembrandts tekeningen komen daarbij naar voren als echte egodocumenten. Ze onthullen niet alleen zijn opvattingen over tekenkunst, maar ook wat hem aantrok of tegenstond in het landschap van zijn tijd. Tegelijkertijd kon Rembrandt met nauwelijks merkbare ingrepen een eenvoudig landschappelijk gegeven kenschetsen op een manier die het eeuwigheidswaarde geeft. Het landschap van Rembrandt is een standaardwerk zowel voor het Rembrandtonderzoek als voor de landschapsgeschiedenis van Amsterdam en omgeving.
