BARRIE. J. M.
PETER PAN. Or the boy who would not grow up.
Hodder & Stoughton Limited. London. 1928. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.4 x 5.1 inches). A fine bright copy in publishers original blue cloth with printed paper labels on front board and spine. In the scarce original dustwrapper, lettered in blue and red. The wrapper is near to very good with some loss to the edges and darkening to the spine. Overall a very good copy. ----- This is the first edition of the play, and was issued as a volume in the uniform edition of the Plays of Barrie. Copies retaining the fragile original dustwrapper are scarce. ------ There are three versions of the Peter Pan story that J. M. Barrie published, after the character first appeared in hie novel The Little White Bird in 1902. The first is Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, which was issued in 1906, complete with fifty full colour plates by Arthur Rackham. This is the story of Peter Pan having adventures with the Fairies, Pixies and Animals of the Famous London Park. The second book issued was Peter and Wendy, published in 1911, with a decorative title page and twelve full page mono plates by F. D. Bedford. This is the Best known of the three, with Peter and Wendy and the other Darling children visiting Never Never Land and meeting Captain Hook and the Crocodile. The last is Peter Pan; or the Boy who would not grow up, published in 1928. This is actually the first time Barrie's famous Peter Pan play, performed on stage since 1904, was published in book form.

BEARDSLEY. AUBREY, Illustrates: FOOTE. SAMUEL. And HOOK. THEODORE.
BON-MOTS OF SAMUEL FOOTE AND THEODORE HOOK. Edited by Walter Jerrold. With grotesques by Aubrey Beardsley.
J. M. Dent and Company. London. 1904. THIRD EDITION. Small 8vo. (5.1 x 3.4 inches). Reprint of the original 1894 edition. 66 fine line illustrations by Beardsley, 25 new designs for this edition and 41 reprinted from earlier volumes issued in the Bon-Mots series. A few light spots to some of the pages but generally a very good copy in a fine early 20th century leather binding, possibly executed in 1922, of full burgundy crushed morocco. Both boards and spine with elaborate gilt decoration. Spine also lettered in gilt. Plain grey endpapers. Gilt inner dentelles. All edges gilt. A neat pencil note inside the rear cover might be a clue to the binder and date of the binding; 'MMXXI. A. EE.'. A couple of tiny holes to the bottom ninge but overall this is a very good and highly attractive binding. --- Lasner. Checklist of the published work of Aubrey Beardsley. No. 20 (listing the 1894 first edition).

BEARDSLEY. AUBREY.
THE PAY OF THE PIED PIPER. Illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. Reprinted from the 1888 Xmas Entertainment Programme of the Brighton Grammar School.
NP. ND. c. 1898. Set of 11 full page illustrations by Beardsley Sewn in pale blue/grey card wrapper. No text apart from the front wrapper.(8.4 x 5.4 inches). Mark Samuels Lasner, in his checklist of Beardsley's work, describes a set of these illustrations as being issued as loose plates in blue wrappers (5a) but this copy is the 11 etchings printed on the recto of white paper leaves and sewn into the card wraps. A couple of spots to the edge of the first couple of leaves, away from the illustration, otherwise a clean and bright example in very good wrappers with a small amount of marking and handling to the edges. Overall a better than very good example of this rare item.

BECKETT. SAMUEL. ; WILLIAMS. WILLIAM CARLOS. ; EUGENE JOLAS. & OTHERS.
OUR EXAMINATION ROUND HIS FACTIFICATION FOR INCAMINATION OF WORK IN PROGRESS. With letters of protest by G. V. L. Slingsby and Vladimir Dixon.
Sylvia Beach. Shakespeare and Company. Paris. 1929. FIRST TRADE EDITION. 8vo. (7 x 5.6 inches). Page edges tanned, as usual, a small stain to the fore edge of the first handful of pages and a few minor chips to the edges of a few leaves, otherwise a very good example in the original cream coloured paper wraps, printed in black to spine and both covers. Some loss to the top of the spine, but not affecting the lettering, and a small closed tear and some minor chipping to the extremities. Paper a bit toned and rubbed but overall a presentable copy. There was also a limited edition of 96 numbered copies on thicker verge d'Arches paper issued simultaneously with this issue. ----- This early critique of Joyce's final work was published some 10 years prior to the publication of the finished novel. Part of the incentive to publish was apparently to raise funds for the perennially impecunious Joyce. A myth surrounding this work is that one or both of the two letters of protest were written by Joyce himself. However both authors existed, indeed Beach herself commissioned Slingsby. Dixon's effort, which is marvellous, was an unsolicited one by a Russian émigré who was to die in Paris in 1929, just as the book was published. -- Slocum and Cahoon. B.10.

Publishers white paper wraps printed in blue and black. Original glassine around the wraps. A lovely copy, and scarce in such nice condition, of the first printing of Beckett's translation.
