[2], L, 521, [1 blank] pp.First edition of this extensive work on the cultivation and multiplication of plants and trees, accompanied by an introduction which explains the basics of horticulture. The work discusses hundreds of plants in alphabetical order, and gives important facts about their growth and development. All mentioned plants were considered suitable for Dutch gardens. The work was very accessible and easy to read for the general public. According to Van Eeden, it was so popular, that the publisher still received inquiries for it in the 1860s. However, since the information in it was no longer up-to-date by this time, the work was edited and re-published in 1868 as Hortus Batavus. The present work, however, is the first edition. With a red ownership stamp ("Ex Libris J. Visser, Rotterdam") on the front wrapper and the title-page, the printed price of the work on the title-page has been corrected by hand. The edges and corners of the wrappers are frayed and the spine is damaged, with loss of material at the head and foot. The work is occasionally very slightly foxed and the edges are lightly browned. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Eeden, F. W. van, Hortus Batavus, introduction; Stafleu & Cowan 1626; not in Pritzel.

We have not succeeded in identifying the artist of these beautiful drawings. We know no other drawing that is clearly from the same hand. Two artists are mentioned as possible candidates, Govert Flinck (Cleves 1615-1660 Amsterdam) and Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (1621 - Amsterdam - 1674). The present drawings are probably made around the middle of the 17th century in Holland. The composition is similar to some papers in florilegia, such as Theodor de Bry (1611/1612 to 1641 and later), but they never show so many species and the flowers on a sheet. This study could be a sketch for a painting, not necessarily a floral still life, possibly a landscape. In fine condition.l Cf. Bernt, Die niederländischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. [1], [1 blank], 400, [1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank] pp.A rare 19th century work on Mozambique, which was a colony of the Portuguese empire at the time. Sebastião Xavier Botelho (1768-1840) was the "capitão general" of this colony from 1825-1829, or the commander-in-chief of the army. His work offers a rare geographical description of Mozambique. The author describes every region of the colony in detail, aided by the maps in the back of the book. He based the information in this work on his own experiences, but also made use of maps and documents he found in the colonial archives.According to Innocencio, Botelho initially published the book for his friends, thus making it a scarce work. It was well received in Lisbon, however, and a second part followed in 1837. Critics abroad were less enthusiastic. Colonialism was not widely supported anymore, so a work like this was highly scrutinised. According to the anonymous reviewer of the Edinburgh Review, Botelho mostly succeeded in highlighting the mismanagement in the Portuguese colonies. With a later paper ticket of a Porto-based bookseller mounted on the recto of the first free flyleaf. The spine shows some signs of wear, some scoring to the front board, a partially repaired tear in the gutter margin of the first lithographed map, slightly foxed throughout. Otherwise in very good condition.l Memoria estatistica sobre os dominios Portuguezes na Africa oriental. Por Sebastião Xavier Batalho. [22], [2 blank]; 72; 46, [2 blank]; 31, [1 blank]; 15, [1 blank]; 14, [2 blank]; 31, [1 blank] pp.First edition of the first modern treatise on oceanography, by Giovanni Botero (1543/44-1617), along with the first editions of the same author’s extensive additions to and expansions of his great 1589 treatise on political philosophy, Della ragion di stato libri dieci, which forcefully argues against the amoral view in Machiavelli’s 1532 Il princepe (The prince). Parts 2-4, for example, discuss the qualities that a ruler needs, with 31 pages devoted to the importance of reputation, which he had covered in half a page in 1589. His arguments that a ruler without morals cannot maintain a stable state certainly remain relevant today! Part 1 discusses great rulers of classical antiquity and part 5 discusses fortification. Botero wrote while employed by Cardinal Federico Borromeo, Archbishop of Milan, his moral views were closely tied to his religious beliefs as a Catholic, Jesuit and admirer of Thomas Acquinas, and his ideas supported the Counter-Reformation, but his publications were widely read in many languages and appear to have had a mostly unacknowledged influence on a broad spectrum of writers, including Walter Raleigh, Tommaso Campanella, Thomas Hobbes, Edward Misselden, Montesquieu, Christopher Polhem and Veit Ludwig van Seckendorff. The treatise on oceanography is wholly new here and also ahead of its time. In nine chapters it covers the relative proportions of sea and land; the depth of the sea; the reasons why seas do not rise, even though rivers flow into them; physical qualities, including salinity and colour; dynamic aspects, including waves, tides and currents (3 chapters) and the geographical divisions into seas and oceans. The seven parts of this work were clearly designed to be issued together (the general title-page lists each of the 6 text parts and is followed by an index to each part in the same order), though each has its own series of page numbers and quire signatures. The parts are not numbered, but the preliminaries of the text parts are dated, giving nearly the same order as the title-page and indexes from 1 February to 5 March 1598. An English translation of the 1589 Ragion di stato recently appeared in the series Cambridge texts in the history of political thought, which notes its great importance and that in spite of its enormous influence it remains little known among today’s scholars. The present additions have also been unjustly overlooked. With a contemporary(?) owner’s name on the title-page, difficult to make out, a few contemporary manuscript notes in the fore-edge margin (some slightly shaved: although the endpapers may be contemporary. The second and fourth text parts (following the order on the title-page) are here interchanged. With a tear along the gutter fold at the foot of the general title-page, mostly marginal water stains and about 4 sheets slightly browned, but otherwise in good condition and complete with all three blank leaves. An unjustly overlooked work by a political philosopher who was ahead of his time, including the first modern treatise on oceanography.l ICCU CNCE 7296; USTC 816583; cf. Esprit de Francklin ... Le B[on].homme Richard.Chalonnes sur Loire, Fremy frères, Bottrel et Cie., [ca. 1830]. Blown glass bottle made in the form of a book (15 x 10 x 3 cm plus 1.5 cm neck and lip). The "spine" is covered with gold-tooled red morocco, with 7 horizontal rolls dividing it into 5 fields plus a smaller 6th at the foot, the title and the French form of Franklin's pen-name in fields 3 and 4 and a decoration in fields 1, 3 and 5, the "boards" covered with paper, each with an lithographed rectangular decorative border enclosing an oval laurel wreath around an oval paper overlay with a lithographed view, that on the front board showing Benjamin Franklin and that on the back board showing a man in the distillery, each with accompanying texts above and below the wreath. The paper sides (but not their overlays) have a slight reddish cast.
A lovely early example of a "blook" (an non-book object made to look like a book) or faux book, in this case a bottle for spirits that could be kept on a bookshelf where it would appear to be a book. The spine title, Esprit de Francklin was used (with k rather than ck) for an 1828 French collection of Franklin's Poor Richard writings (announced in Bibliographie de la France on 15 December 1827), but here it is a joke: "esprit" like the English "spirits" can refer to distilled alcoholic drinks. The lithographed image on the front of the bottle shows a three-quarter view, full-length portrait of Benjamin Franklin (apparently fairly young, since he is not fat and only slightly balding). The lithographed image on the back shows a man wearing an apron whom Gruel supposed was peeling potatoes, but there is distilling equipment on the floor behind him and on closer examination the supposed potatoes appear to be lemons, presumably for making spirits. On 8 November 1822 the distillery Frémy frères & Bottrel received a 5-year brevet d'invention "pour des bouteilles en verre de diverses dimensions, ayant la forme d'un livre, et destinées à renfermer des liqueurs" (Bulletin des sciences technologiques I (1824), p. 384. They apparently continued to manufacture them for about 25 years. While the Franklin book bottle that Gruel describes and illustrates looks almost exactly like ours and its sides appear to be printed from the same plates, its engraving and spine consistently spell "Franklin" with a k and ours with a ck, and the engraved texts differ in content, arrangement and style. Gruel's lacks the 4-line verse on ours. The sides have a rubbed spot at Franklin’s feet and the feet of the man in the distillery, where the bottle has a slight bulge, one of the bottom outer corners is somewhat chipped, but the whole is still in good condition. A novelty faux book, a liquor bottle disguised as a book and an unusual French Benjamin Franklin item.l L. Gruel, “Recherches sur les reliures-bouteille”, in: Bulletin du bibliophile (1902), pp. 323-326 (a variant with the brevet on the front rather than the poem, front and spine illustrated); for blooks in general: M. 7, 7 engraved ll.Two rare print series (part 2 especially rare) showing beautiful, rich and decorative designs for fountains by François Boucher (1703-1770), famous French painter and decorative draughtsman, professor and later director of the Paris Academy, inspector of the Gobelin manufacture at Paris, and "premier peintre du Roi". The present two series show some of his best work, richly decorative forms in an early rococo style, incorporating (mostly wingless) putti, naked water nymphs (naiads), merfolk, a satyr, Neptune in his seahorse-drawn chariot, other water gods and godesses, shells, dolphins, sea monsters, a swan and other animals. Some were actually built: the Neptune print may have inspired Barthélemy Guibal's 1750 Fontaine de Neptune at the Place Royale in Nancy. [16], 203, [8]; [2], 219, [8]; [2], 208, [12] pp.The second edition of an interesting iconographical dictionary by the French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Boudard (1710-1768) who spent most of his active life in Italy, from 1749 to his death in 1678 at the Bourbon court in Parma. The first edition, with parallel texts in French and an Italian translation by his friend Abate Giuseppe Pezzana, was published in Parma in 1759. The terms iconology, used by Boudard, and iconography have both been used from at least the 17th century, but most authors do not distinguish the two. After an important introduction on iconography in general, follow the 630 emblems, arranged alphabetically and based on the most influential iconographical work of the 17th century, Cesare Ripa’s Iconologica. Boudard found Ripa's work so indispensable for his classes at the local Academy of Fine Arts that he published this "digest", picturing allegorical emblems of virtues, vices, emotions, arts, sciences, including series of mythological subjects, the continents, the seasons, the senses, the works of mercy, the Beatitudes etc. The present copy includes A6, the leaf containing emblems 11 and 12: "Adulation" and "Adultere", sometimes lacking (perhaps the adultery emblem was considered inappropriate for some audiences). With the owner’s inscription of Julie Lang, a round owner’s stamp with the initials "B.K." on the first free endleaf of each volume and the handwritten inscription, "Erhalten im Jahre 1822 …" on the first free end-leaf in vol. 1. VI, 144, [5] pp.First English edition, with aquatint profiles, of Bougard's Le Petit Flambeau de la Mer, a marine pilot guide to coastal navigation originally published in 1684 and extensively revised for the present edition by Serres. The coastal profiles cover the British Isles, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France, and the islands included among the maps include Corsica, Malta and Corfu. The coastal profiles show many spectacular cliffs and rock formations, numerous light-houses (an important source for their history), fortresses and occasionally other buildings, as well as ships and smaller boats, a large view of the whole city of La Valette on Malta, and even three smoking volcanoes (Vesuvius, Stromboli and Etna). The text includes information on the Barbary Coast, and islands and coasts en route to the East Indies. This is the first major revision to the maps and views of the Petit Flambeau, which saw only minor changes of content from 1684 to 1716 and no more in the editions (to 1789) before the present. With a contemporary owner's signature on the title-page (Peter Rye) and the lovely armorial bookplate of the Philadelphia publisher and bibliophile Moncure Biddle (1882-ca. 1952). Spine subtly restored, but otherwise fine and wholy untrimmed.l Abbey, England 344; Cat. NHSM, p. 218; Pastoureau, Bougard N (5 copies); Phillips & LeGear 2852.

Les entretiens d'Ariste et d'Eugene. Dernière edition. ... Sur la copie imprimée à Paris.Amsterdam, "Jaques le Jeune" [= Daniel Elzevier], 1671. 12mo. With an engraved frontispiece, woodcut publisher's device (armillary sphere) on title-page and 2 woodcut decorated initials. Polished gold-tooled red goatskin morocco (ca. 1840?), each board in a panel design. A pencil note on an endleaf attributes the binding to "Muller" on grounds unknown to us, but he was active from 1834, which accords well with the date of the present binding.
[8], 438, [9], [1 blank] pp.First Netherlands edition, in the same year as the first Paris edition but including revisions from the second Paris edition, of a self-consciously elegant work with six conversations between two friends, presented as models of eloquence by the distinguished French Jesuit priest, essayist and neo-classical critic Dominique Bouhours (1628-1702). It gives a good picture of salon society in 17th-century Paris, which served as a model for much of the world. The upper class literary public received it very favourably, praising the delicacy and purity of the author's style. With owner's inscription on an endleaf. With a small marginal ink stain on the title-page and a few corners showing old folds, but still in very good condition. Hinges professionally restored and binding otherwise very good. Attractively bound Elzevier edition of a literary work with six conversations demonstrating the art of eloquence.l Adams, Rawles & Saunders F123; Berghman 1346; Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 226; Willems 1440.

[Manuscript ledger recording the time spent working on infrastructural projects].[London?,] 1952-1955. Folio. Lined journal, each page ruled for monthly tallies, with some extra annotations. Contemporary cloth.
[48] pp.Manuscript ledger recording the work hours of F.A. Boulten, from 1952 to 1955. Although Boulten's specific field of work, or even the company he worked for, is not stated, he worked on engineering and infrastructure projects in the British colonies, the Commonwealth and other states in Britain's sphere of influence (most notably Iraq). Each day he devoted 1 to 3.5 hours to multiple power plants, oil terminals, bridges, dams and harbours. As Boulten worked on most of the projects before construction had started, it is probable that his firm was related to the initial financing of the project. A probable suspect for the latter is the Colonial Development Corporation, founded by Great-Britain after World War II for the economic development of its colonial territories. The CDC provided loans for many of the projects mentioned in the ledger. These projects include: the power stations of Aden, Melbourne and Singapore, the oil jetties at Al-Faw near Basra, the harbours of Sierra Leone, Lagos and Mombasa and in Iraq the Adhamiyah Bridge, Darbandikha Dam, Taq Taq Bridge, Lake Tharthar and the Mujarah Canal.Boulten worked 7.5 hours, five days in a week and mentions the days the office was closed, Bank Holidays, sick leave and days off, including one to have an X-ray taken. One of his off days was 2 June 1953, Coronation Day, and he drew a crown above the name of the month. On 15 February 1952 he marked the funeral of King George VI, but spent the day at the office. Binding worn at the extremities; slightly thumbed; in very good condition.
