[6], 65, [7]; 99, [5] pp.Second edition of a work on fortification by Chevalier de Cambray, first published in 1681 at Paris. It is divided into two parts, starting with a treatise on geometry. It explains all the different geometric shapes, both two and three dimensional, how to properly draw them, how enlarge the figures once drawn, how to measure height, distance, surface area, etc., clarified in numerous illustrations on 8 engraved plates. The second part deals with fortifications as described by Sebastien le Prestre, Marquis de Vauban (1633-1707), the most influential military engineer of his age. It contains an index on fortification terms and their definitions, and a thorough description of all the different elements, corners and shapes of both regular and irregular fortresses, illustrated with 22 engraved plates.Leaf a1 damaged in the margin, corner torn off plate Q and a small water stain in the lower margin of several plates, none affecting the illustrations. Binding chafed and slightly worn at the head and foot of the hinges, with traces of use along the extremities. Otherwise a good copy.l Jähns, p. 1441; Jordan 0575.

[20], 423[=424], [2 blank], [18] pp.First edition of an important biography of the German philosopher and theologian of the Protestant Reformation Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560), who worked closely with Martin Luther. It was written by Melanchthon's close friend Joachim Camerarius (1500-1574), a classical scholar who was able to consult a large amount of personal correspondence, which makes this work a valuable source. From the library of Neidstein castle in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria. [12], 298 ll.Rare first and only(?) edition of the Italian translation of the first (and only published?) part of a chivalric romance, generally known as the Félix Magno, translated by Camillo Camilli (d. 1615). The original Spanish was first published in four parts at Barcelona by Carlos Amorós in 1531 entitled Los cuatro libros del valerosisimo caballero Félix Magno. The romance deals with the life and history of Félix Magno, the son of King Falángriz of Great Britain and Queen Clarinea, on a quest for glory. A large part of the work is dedicated to struggles with Moors and Turks. Like most chivalric novels, it was heavily influenced by stories of King Arthur and similar romances like Amadis de Gaule. Our copy contains only the first part (with the running title Fatti di Felicemagno - parte prima through the whole work), and it appears the other parts were not published in translation at all. Lacking the final leaf containing only the colophon and its blank verso. With two owner's entries on paste-down. Small marginal hole on the title-page and following 3 leaves, very slightly browned with some occasional minor foxing. Binding with a few holes and the foot of the back board slightly damaged. Overall in good condition.l BMC STC Italian, p. 245; Palau 87526; USTC 806217 (8 copies); not in WorldCat.

376, 368, 208, 108, [22], [ 2 blank]. Lacks the individual title-pages.Rare edition of the collected works of Luis de Camões, including Os Lusiadas and three Rimas. In the same year, Antonio Craesbeeck published another edition with the same title but with less content and with a different frontispiece. This collection of works is made up of separate publications.Os Lusiadas is the great epic poem of Portuguese exploration, in the original Portuguese, a monument of Portuguese literature that gave a Homeric aura to Renaissance voyages of discovery and colonial conquests, here together with the other works of Camões. Camões's work was first published in Portuguese at Lisbon in 1572. In the early 1530s the great Portuguese historian, João de Barros, most famous for his Decadas de Asia, had called for an epic poem of Portuguese exploration and discovery. Luis de Camões (1524-1580) answered that call four decades later. Camões was educated in a monastic school in Coimbra, and produced poetry and plays at an early age. In his early twenties he was banished from Lisbon after producing a play considered disparaging to the royal family. He served as a soldier in the Portuguese forces besieging Ceuta in North Africa, where he lost an eye. Camões returned to Lisbon in 1550, but found himself in more trouble, and was pardoned by the King on condition that he serve the Crown in India for five years. He arrived at Goa in late 1553 and stayed there briefly before joining an expedition to the Malabar Coast. Later he participated in a campaign against pirates on the shores of Arabia. In 1556 he left Goa again for the East Indies, taking part in the military occupation of Macao, where he remained for many months. On his return trip to India, he was shipwrecked off the Mekong and wandered in Cambodia before reaching Malacca and eventually returning to Goa. He did not return to Lisbon until 1570. The Lusiads gives a fine description not only of Portuguese exploits in the East, but also of the flora and fauna of Asia and India, the ethnographic details of the peoples there, and the geography of the region, informed by Camões's own experiences as well as his familiarity with Ptolemy and Barros. With the bookplate of "Aulo-Gélio", 1961, with a view of Lisbon. First few pages slightly worn with some repairs. Stained throughout. Some contemporary annotations in ink in the margins.l Bibliotheca Lusitana p. 62; Inocêncio, vol. 14, p. 78; José de Canto, 37.

15 pp.A comprehensive collection of plates showing all architectural features and sculpture of the Amsterdam City Hall, since 1808 the Royal Palace, here in the Covens & Mortier firm's rare ca. 1780 issue with the engravings newly printed from the original copper plates from the years 1655 to 1664 and the text reissued from Leonardus Schenk's 1747 Dutch language edition, the whole with a new title-page. ''This version has not been seen'' (BAL). At least most of the plates were engraved for and first published in Jacob van Campen's masterpiece Afbeelding van 't stadt huys van Amsterdam (Amsterdam, Frederick de Wit, 1664), Hubert Quiellinus's Prima [et secunda] pars praecipuarum ... curiae Amstelrodamenis (Amsterdam, Frederick de Wit 1655-1663) and Afbeelding van 't stadt huys van Amsterdam in dartigh coopere plaaten ... geteeckent door Jacob Vennekool (Amsterdam, Dancker Danckerts, 1661).It includes the famous plate showing the extraordinary cartographic mosaic floor of the Burgerzaal of the Amsterdam City Hall, designed by Jacob van Campen, with a celestial map in the centre and the magnificent map of the world in 2 hemispheres on either side. The engraving was first published in 1661, and the map shows Tasman's recent discoveries in Australia and Tasmania, and depicts California as an island. Many discoveries from his second voyage remained otherwise unpublished until the end of the 17th century. The drawing of the floor was made by Jacob Vennekool who worked closely with Van Campen, and since his drawings were first published even before the building was completed, they may reflect Van Campen's plan more closely than the finished building itself. They also, of course, show it before the alterations made at various times in later years.Binding a little worn, untrimmed, otherwise in good condition. [1], [1 blank], VIII, 96, [1 blank], [1] pp.Joaquim Pinto de Campos was born in Brazil, in the province of Pernambuco, in 1819. He became active in provincial politics in 1845, shortly before the Praieira revolt in Pernambuco of 1848-1849. He actively helped maintain public order during this revolt and was rewarded for it by the government by being elected as a general and provincial deputy continuously from then on. He corresponded personally with the emperor in this role, so he could write his work partly from his own observations. In general, Dom Pedro II was well liked. His father and grandfather had helped Brazil win it's independence and he himself was seen as a good ruler. The country flourished while he was on the throne. [8]; [1]; [1] ll. plus the part-title, double portrait and XIV, XII, XII prints.First complete edition of a series of engraved views of Venice by Visentini after Canaletto's paintings, which were in the collection of the book collector, patron of the arts and British Consul of Venice Joseph Smith (ca. 1673/4-1770). Canaletto, also known as Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768) was an Italian painter renowned for his paintings depicting Venice and its canals. Visentini's plates are not only the best known among the many engravings made after Canaletto's famous views of Venice, but also the best and most influential: "crucial to forming the image of Venice in the mind of its visitors" (Millard). The British Consul Smith commissioned the painter, engraver and architect Antonio Visentini (1688-1782), connected to the Academia and to the artistic and publishing circle around Smith, to engrave the plates after Canaletto’s paintings. The series of 38 plates is divided into three suites of respectively XIV, XII and XII numbered prints, each suite with its own letterpress title-page. The first set of plates is entirely focussed on the Grand Canal, as is promised by the original title-page, the Prospectus Magni Canali. The prints of the second suite particularly show the banks of the Grand Canal. The third suite shows views of campi and the Piazza San Marco. Besides Saint Mark's Basilica itself and the Piazza we see for example the campo of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, the Piazza San Polo and San Niccolo on the Lido. All prints are captioned in Italian. The present 1742 edition is the first to include all 38 prints of the complete three suites, but Visentini had completed and published the first suite of views already in 1735. The present complete series proved very succesfull, with further editions in 1751, 1754 and 1773. Even in the 19th century it ran through new editions: an 1833 edition with French and Italian captions was reprinted in 1838. The present first edition of the complete series is quite rare: we have traced only 6 copies worldwide in WorldCat and it rarely appears on the market.Binding a little rubbed: spine a little damaged, paper sides frayed around the edges and chipped in the right lower corner of the front board, boards a little stained. Bookblock slightly loose in the binding. Some marginal tears professionally repaired. Prints only slightly browned along the edges of the margins, but otherwise in very good condition. The rare complete first edition of one of the most influential print series in shaping the image of Venice.l Kat. XXIV, 432 pp.First edition of the synopsis of the third and almost entirely rewritten edition of the Flore française. The first edition of the Flore française or "French flora" appeared in 1778 in three volumes, compiled by the French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829). "Lamarck designed the Flore française specifically for the task of plant identification and used dichotomous keys, which are classification tools that allow the user to choose between opposing pairs of morphological characters to achieve this end" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). The present synopsis of the Flore française consists of brief descriptions of in total 4688 different plants, all subdivided according to order, family and genus. With some manuscripts notes on the second leaf. Only some occasional foxing, otherwise a good copy.l R.W. Burkhardt,"Jean-Baptiste Lamarck" in: Encyclopaedia Britannica online; Stafleu & Cowan 988.

[1], [1 blank], [14], 272, [5], [2 blank], XVII pp.First edition of a study of Arabic grammar in Spanish, including an Arabic-Spanish dictionary and a translation of a general Christian doctrine text into Arabic. It was written by Francisco Cañes (1730-1795), who was an Arabist and a Franciscan missionary in the Near East. In the preface, he states his reasoning for producing and publishing the present work: "[I] therefore, present this Arabic grammar to the public, wishing to contribute on my part to the ease of learning a language that is not rude, barbarous, and useless, and that some out of ignorance despise; but elegant, erudite, and very useful, as learned men recognize: in view of how much is written in it, and of the numerous nations that speak it in Asia, Africa and part of Europe." (p. [4], translated from the Spanish). He produced the present grammar and his great Arabic - Latin - Spanish dictionary (1787) by Royal order of the court of Charles III of Spain, for the profit of the general public and especially for missionaries in the Holy Land and the Middle East as a whole. With some annotations in ink and pencil in the text, binding slightly worn around the spine, first and last free endleaves professionally restored, occasional very light foxing. Overall in good condition.l Palau 42854.
