12], 269, [1 blank], [1], [1 blank] pp.Rare first and only edition of a work on falconry, followed by a short treatise on cormorant fishing by Alfred Belvallette, "well known in France as a skilful falconer, and he writes with a thorough knowledge of his subject… French falconers apply the term fauconnerie only to flights with the long-winged hawks (Peregrine, Merlin, Hobby, and Jerfalcon), flights with the short-winged Goshawk (autor) and Sparrow-hawk (épervier) coming under the expressive and very convenient term autourserie" (Bibl. accipitraria). The work partly contains original illustrations, including many photographs of falconers in action, but also copies of Schlegel and others. With only a couple spots, otherwise in very good condition.l Thiebaud, p. 66; WorldCat (9 copies); cf. Bibl. accipitraria 219.

144; [4], XXIV, 191, [1 blank], [2], 192-228; 108; 16 pp.Ad 1: One of two probably simultaneous issues of the rarer of the first two French editions, all dated 1743, of a chronicle of the kings of England that covers the period 1066-1603, first published in English in 1740. Robert Dodsley (1703-64) was a poet, playwright and bookseller. Other sources ascribe it to Lord Chesterfield. “Dodsley could not have written a work showing so much wit and literary force” (DNB). The present French translation is attributed to Louis Charles Fougeret de Monbron.Ad 2: Letters from Calvin addressed to Jacques the Bourgogne and Yolande de Brederode written between 1543 and 1553. They offer a case study in the interaction of politics and personalities that shaped the European reform movement in general and the position of Calvin in connection with the worldly powers of Europe in particular. Jacques de Bourgogne, who encountered evangelical ideas in Louvain, married into one of Holland's most prominent protestant families, was denounced as a heretic for receiving a Reformed preacher at his chateau in Brabant, sought refuge in Cologne, Strasbourg and Basel, and finally settled, with Calvin's help, in a village near Geneva. De Bourgogne's odyssey is exemplary for the upheavals experienced by a generation that heeded the reformer's call, preferring exile to renouncing their new faith under pressure in their native lands.Ad 3: Very rare first and only edition of an up-to-date account of the political situation at the courts of Europe in the 1740s. The goal of the author, described only as A. C. and not identified, is to achieve a stable peace in Europe and to guarantee the authority awarded in the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713. This was a legal mechanism designed to ensure that the Austrian throne and Habsburg lands would be inherited by Emperor Charles VI's daughter, Maria Theresa. It was part of the law of the house of Austria. Hungary which had an elective kingship, had accepted the house of Habsburg as hereditary kings in the male line without election in 1687, but had not accepted semi-Salic inheritance. The Emperor-King agreed that if the Habsburg male line became extinct, Hungary would once again have an elective monarchy. The Kingdom of Bohemia also followed this rule. Ad 4: Extremely rare extract of the funeral oration for André-Hercule Cardinal de Fleury, French Bishop of Fréjus (1653 - 29 January 1743) and cardinal who served as the chief minister to Louis XV. The additional remarks are abstracted from a conversation between two French officers on their return from the Bohemian campaign. Fleury found the nation poorly prepared when in 1733 war was forced upon France. Library bookplate on inside front cover. Binding worn, some parts of the spine gone, front hinge slightly cracked, otherwise in good condition.

Folio (32.5 x 20.5 cm). Two manuscript journals in French, written in brown ink on laid paper. Contemporary coarse brown paper wrappers, with the 1771 journal in loose bifolia (never sewn) inserted.
[2], [2 blank], [11], [1 blank]; 18, [6 blank] pp.Two journals kept by the Dutch Lieutenant Colonel Volkier Rudolph Bentinck (1738-1820), usually called Rudolph or sometimes Rudolphus, in the Dutch and British army, who had earlier fought alongside George Washington in the British army in America. They give an intimate and very personal view of daily life in the army, especially social life. It does show Bentinck inspecting fortifications (at least once climbing to the top) and mines in Maastricht (including the fort on “Montagne de St Pierre” [= Sint-Pietersberg]), Den Bosch (Bois-le-Duc), Bergen op Zoom, Namur (also an armaments foundry) and elsewhere. It shows his enthusiasm for Captain Schoester’s collection of battle plans (“Il me montra une fort belle collection de plans des battailles des deux derniers gueres” and later “Je passai chez Monsr de Shoester le matin, pour en tirer encore quelques informations concernant ma collection de livres et plans militaires”) and he later views fortification plans with Colonel Carel Diederik du Moulin (1727-1793), a well-known Dutch fortifications engineer.Rudolph Bentinck had served as a Lieutenant in the British Royal American Army from 1756 to 1762, during the Seven Years’ War, often known in the United States as the French and Indian War, when he fought side by side with Colonel George Washington, the future first president of the United States. On his return he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in Jersey from 1769 to 1771 (also Guernsey according to the NNWB). The present journals fill part of a gap in his biography: that of 1771 begins in The Hague, where he took a Dutch commission for two years in July 1771 to inspect the fortifications in Venloo, Maastricht and Namur, but the 1774 journal shows he was in British service on Menorca by May 1774, when the journal begins with his departure (Bentinck, Echte stukken, 1784, notes his return from Menorca on 29 May 1775). He left British service in 1776 and returned to the Dutch army. He was granted an Overijsel knighthood as Heer van Schoonheeten in 1777 and made a Baron in 1819.Although neither these journals nor the earlier American one (formerly kept with this one and written in a similar hand) names its author, the events in the American journal clearly identify him as Lieutenant Rudolph Bentinck, who visited William Bentinck, 2nd Duke of Portland, on his way to America. In the present 1771 journal he sets off on 7 July 1771 with (Cornelis Pieter) Baron van Leiden, (Nicolaas Baron van Denike, Heer?) van Nieuwland, (Adolf Warner), Baron van Palland(t) tot Beerse (1745-1823) and “mon frere Diepenhein” [= Derk Bentinck van Diepenheim (1741-1813)], the reference to his brother confirming his identity as Volkier Rudolph Bentinck (1738-1820). They travelled mostly by coach.A contemporary manuscript note on the front wrapper reads “Journael zedert 1771 | en een van 1762”, and Bentinck’s American journal of 1756-1762 was formerly loosely inserted with the present journals of 1771 and 1774.In very good condition, with only the wrapper showing some wear and tear at the extremities. Two detailed and very personal journals of a Dutch Lieutenant Colonel in the Netherlands (1771) and the Mediterranean and Portugal (1774), interesting for its accounts of fortifications, mines and troops, but even more for the social life of officers and their relations with women, from princesses to servants.l For background information: V.R. XIV, [3], [1 blank], 80; [3], [1 blank], 68; [3], [1 blank], 42; [3], [1 blank], 21, [1 blank], 18, 16, [1], [1 blank] pp. including the chromolithographed title-page.First and only edition of a rare and extensive work on Algeria, with hundreds of stunning and very skilfully executed illustrations, the text by the conservator of the library in the Museum of Algiers, Louis Adrien Berbrugger (1801-1869). Parts 1 to 4 cover the four Algerian provinces: Alger, Oran, Bone and Constantine, while part 5 is subdivided into ethnic groups (Jews, Turks, Moors, Berbers and some of the nomadic peoples), coins and flora, with the plants arranged according to Jussieu's system. The 133 beautifully executed lithographed plates also show city views, landscapes, portraits, costumes, scenes from daily life with people from a wide variety of professions and various layers of society, etc. They give a lively and realistic portrait of a country in which many different peoples and cultures coexist. They also show Algeria part way through its gradual conquest by France in the years 1830 to 1848, capturing and preserving images of both the survivals from hundreds of years as an Ottoman state and the early interactions with European society. With 2 oval owner's stamps on the general title-page erased, leaving 2 small blank areas in the chromolithographed background pattern, the first botanical plate severely browned, several plates slightly foxed and a couple more seriously. The binding has some small scuffs at the corners and small cracks at the end of some hinges, and the front hinge of volume 3 has some restorations, but the binding is still good. An extensively and splendidly illustrated description of Algeria.l Colas 298; Hiler, p. 81; Lipperheide Ma 23; Tailliart, l'Algérie dans la littérature française, 718; WorldCat (2 copies); not in Atabey; Blackmer.

Amstelaedamum omnium recentissimè et accuratissime expressum à Petro van den Berghe, Moschus, Arabs[,] Persae, Maurus, Judaeus, uterque[.] Quod ferat huc, rursusque auferat, Indus habet. Hanc dum mundus adit mundumque haec ipsa perrat[!], non urbs fixa loco, sed vagus orbis erit.Amsterdam, Gerard van Keulen, [ca. 1720]. Etched view (50.5 x 81 cm) on two sheets. In a modern wooden frame.
First state of a famous and rare large etching of ships and boats in the IJ inlet, with a panorama of the city of Amsterdam in the background, showing the city between the Oost Indische Zeemagazijn and the Haarlemmerpoort. This view is interesting for the central role that Peter the Great plays in the scene. The Russian Tsar, wearing a fur hat and standing in the stern of the yacht in the foreground to the right of the second East Indiaman, looks through a telescope at the warship he helped build. After Tsar Peter's ship was finished the artist Pieter van den Berge (Amsterdam, 1659-1737) made this etching. It was printed on two leaves by Gerard van Keulen (1678?-1727), the son and scholarly partner of Johannes van Keulen, the famous Amsterdam publisher of maritime atlases. He took over from his father in 1715, dating this print between then and his death. The Tsar may even have been acquainted with the Van Keulen family, for his print collection included many of their prints. The print depicts the city as it appeared ca. 1670, even though it depicts an event of 1698. A key below the engraving names the most important buildings (lettered A to T) including the city hall and the stock exchange. The presence of Tsar Peter and his ship makes this etching more than a topographic view of the city of Amsterdam: it forms a testament to Tsar Peter the Great's remarkable bond with the city of Amsterdam. Slightly browned (primarily in the right sheet) and with a few creases, otherwise in fine condition. Rare etched view of Amsterdam, showing Peter the Great and the Dutch warship he worked on incognito.l D'Ailly, Profielen der stad Amsterdam 119; R.W.P. de Vries, Amsterdamse stadsgezichten 20 (= 2nd state); Bakker & Schmitz, Het aanzien van Amsterdam 58; not in Hollstein.

[48] ll.A fine boxed album of large photographs mainly showing Jerusalem, all by the famous German-born Jewish photographer Peter Bergheim (1813-95). Included are the city gates, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the "Mosque of Omar" (Dome of the Rock, Qubbat as-Sakhra) and the Al-Aqsa (Qibli) Mosque, the Pulpit of Omar, and several city views, but also scenes in Bethany, Jerusalem, Saba, Jericho, and Hebron as well as of the River Jordan. One of the most celebrated photo artists active in Palestine in the 19th century, Bergheim had early converted to Christianity while still in England, where he had emigrated in 1834. He was a merchant and banker; in the Christian quarter of Jerusalem he owned a photography studio which catered to the growing market for souvenir photographs following the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 (cf. J. Hannavy [ed.], Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography, s. v. "Egypt and Palestine", p. 478). Several of the photographs retain his signature in the negative.Numbered 1-54 with a few caption numbers skipped; some photographs are without caption or number. Captions transposed in no. 21/22 and nos. 35/36. Some exterior wear to the original cover integrated into the modern box; the large-sized photographs are well preserved throughout.

CXX, 359, [1 blank]; [4], 443, [1 blank] pp.Enlarged second edition of an important mineralogical work by the Swedish scholar Torbern Olaf Bergman (1735-1784). "From 1775 he began to coin names related to chemical composition, and he attempted a general reform in Sciagraphia regni mineralis (1782) ... Following Linnaeus, Bergman divided inorganic substances into classes, genera, and species; and, as Linnaeus had done with plants and animals, he defined each class and genus by one word and each species by two" (DSB). The first edition consisted of 166 pages and J.C. Delaméthrie doubled the amount of information for the present edition. It provided the first classification of minerals by their composition, and thus based on purely chemical principles. Bergman's analysis also disproved the widely held "saline principle" in crystallization. The two engraved plates belonging to this edition show equipment and crytaline geometry.Somewhat foxed. Bindings rubbed along the extremities, otherwise in good condition, wholly untrimmed.l DSB II, pp. 4-8; Moström 293; Schuh I 488; Ward 179.

Oblong 16mo in 8s (9 x 12 cm). Contemporary sheepskin parchment.
[400] pp.Rare 1610 Liège edition of one of the most successful and remarkable multilingual phrasebooks of all time. The colloquia and dictionary offered its readers handy phrases in seven languages: Flemish, English, German Latin, French, Spanish and Italian, printed in that order in parallel columns over each double-page spread. According to Claes, Verdeyen, and Van Loonen the first edition, in French and Dutch only, had been published about 1530, and had been composed by an Antwerp schoolteacher, Noël de Berlaimont. Today, we can trace over 150 editions of this work between the 1530s and 1885. The first edition with seven languages was printed in 1586 in Antwerp. De Berlaimont advertised his book as a practical and cheap way to learn and converse in multiple languages. Rather than writing a typical dictionary, he gave his readers practical short sentences to use in the most common situations. De Berlaimont’s dictionary offered its readers not only individual sentences on specific topics, but entire conversations in different situations, so the text, though mostly with two or three words to a line, can be read as a continuous text. The “A Lanbury”(?) on the spine may be an early owner. With an armorial bookplate (ca. 1900) with motto “labor omnia vincit” but the family name of the owner is mostly torn off (“Giovanni ...eri”?) and we have not identified the arms: a fess gules with above, the upper part of a rampant lion and below, azure three 5-pointed stars or. With the headings of the columns (indicating the language) slightly shaved on an occasional page, and some foxing, water stains and browning (severe browning in quires I and K, which also have a different watermark), but otherwise in good condition. The binding slightly loose and with a few worm holes, but still in good condition.l ESTC S1428 (8 copies); Peeters-Fontainas 343 (3 copies); STC 1431.20; STCN 427501717 (no location: based on BnF copy on Gallica); cf. STCV (2 copies of 1616 ed.); USTC 1116924 (1 copy of variant issue(?) of 1610 ed.).

Many of the species featured were named in the monograph for the first time. For one remarkable mollusc, the author invented the new genus of Fischeria, now called Profischeria. The description of the genus was written by the zoologist and palaeontologist Paul Fischer (1835-1893).The beautiful coloured lithographs were drawn and lithographed by the artist Eugène Levasseur (1822-after 1866) and according to the title-page "coloured by madam the widow Delarue" and subsequently "retouched with a fine brush by the author".Binding lightly worn at the edges. Some of the plates slightly discoloured at the margins; a very good copy.l Caprotti, l'Illustrazione malacologica, p. 173.

[7 botanical watercolour drawings]. [Netherlands, ca. 1776]. Set of 7 watercolour drawings on laid paper of various sizes ranging from 23×19 to 23×30.5. Each mounted on a backing sheet in modern passepartout.
A set of botanical watercolour drawings signed by the Dutch artist H[endrik?] Berninck who was active in Amsterdam from ca. 1770 until at least 1789. The set includes 6 watercolours after Chinese originals, each depicting a flower, woody plant or branch from a fruit tree set on a somewhat flat background, and 1 floral still life, showing a flower in a pot, with 2 blossoming buds. Berninck started as a copper smith, but was able to live as an artist after an inheritance. Few of his works are known to survive, all flower paintings and drawings in the style of Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch. Only a few very tiny specks, otherwise all in fine condition.l For the artist: Scheen, p. 84; Thieme & Becker III, p. 460; Wurzbach I, p. 92.
