Includes his enormously influential philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful. With an Introductory Discourse Concerning Taste, and Several Other Additions&apos. A few of these volumes are dedicated to Burke's correspondences including letters to Richard Shackleton and the Marquis of Rockingham. Included in his works are also the 'Reflections on the Revolution in France and 'An Address to the King&apos. A New edition In full decorative cloth binding with gilt titles to the spine. Externally, generally smart, there is bumping and some small closed tears to a few of the spines. There is also loss to a spine on one volume, with the backstrip lifting on two volumes. The front hinge has failed to one volume. Internally, all volumes are bright and clean, generally firmly bound. There are bookplates to the front pastedowns bearing the name in Latin Michael Tomkins. London: James Carpenter..., 1837. 4to, pp. viii, [4], 73 [74 blank, 75 - 76 adverts], including half-title, 8 engraved plates, contemporary cloth backed boards, with paper label on front cover; slightly shaken in casing, slight water-staining of last two plates, boards rubbed, with loss of paper on upper corner of rear boards. Burnet (1784 - 1868), painter, engraver, and author, published a number of works on both the practicalities and aesthetics of painting. The above work formed part of his Treatise on Painting, published separately. Among the authors he draws upon for his comments on the aesthetics of painting are Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Reid, and Edmund Burke. He both drew and engraved the illustrations in this book.

Thomas Christie was a Scottish radical political writer during the late 18th century. He, along with J. Johnson, were the original two founders of the important liberal journal, the Analytical Review, which became the mouthpiece for reformers during the 1790s.
