Nisbet, Robert A.
The sociological tradition.
New York : Basic Books, c1966. 6th printing. Orig. cloth binding. Dustjacket. xii,349 pp. 24 cm. Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Book condition : very good. - Robert A. Nisbet (1913-1996) was an American sociologist and professor at the University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley, Nisbet found a powerful defense of intermediate institutions in the conservative thought of 19th-century Europe. Nisbet saw in thinkers like Edmund Burke and Alexis de Tocqueville, then all but unknown in American scholarship an argument on behalf of what he called 'conservative pluralism.' In this book he describes the sociological tradition that reaches from Tocqueville and Marx through Weber, Durkheim and Simmel down to contemporary thought. It also explores the relation of this sociogical tradition to the political ideologies of liberalism, radicalism, and conservatism.

Order of the House of Peers
The Tryal of Dr. Henry Sacheverell, Before the House of Peers, for High Crimes and Misdemeanors; Upon an Impeachment by the Knights, Citizens and Burgesses in Parliament Assembled, in the Name of Themselves, and of All the Commons of Great Britain: Begun in Westminster-Hall, the 27th Day of February, 17th, and from Thence Continued by Several Adjournments Until the 23rd Day of March Following. & the Bishop of Salisbury&Apos;S, and the Oxford&Apos;S Speeches in the House of Lords, on the First Article of the Impeachment of Dr. Henry Sacheverell; Also the Bishop of Lincoln&Apos;S and Bishop of Norwich&Apos;S Speeches at the Opening of the Second Article of the Said Impeachment.
London, Jacob Tonson, 1710. Leather. A rare and old two volume edition of Henry Sacheverell's trial in the first decade of the eighteenth-century. Henry Sacheverell (1674 – 1724) was an English High Church clergyman and politician. The trial lasted from 27 February to 21 March 1710 and the verdict was that Sacheverell should be suspended for three years and that the two sermons should be burnt at the Royal Exchange. This was the decree of the state, and it had the effect of making him a martyr in the eyes of the populace and (along with heavy taxes on Londoners) bringing about the first Sacheverell riots that year in London and the rest of the country, which included attacks on Presbyterian and other Dissenter places of worship, with some being burned down. The rioting in turn led to the downfall of the ministry later that year and the passing of the Riot Act in 1714. Writing later in the eighteenth century, the Whig member of parliament Edmund Burke used the speeches of Whig leaders at the Sacheverell trial in his An Appeal from the New to the Old Whigs (1791) to demonstrate true Whiggism (as opposed to the beliefs of the Foxite 'New Whigs'). The volume also includes the Bishop of Salibsury's speeches from the trial delivered in the House of Lords. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart, lightly rubbed in places with some wear to the extremities. Boards held by cords only. Pages generally bright and clean throughout with some browning and foxing owing to age. Textblock cockled. Ink inscription to front pastedown. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
