[Edmund Burke]
A Philosophical Enquiry Into the Origin of Our Ideas of This Sublime and Beautiful
London, J. Dodsley, 1787. Cloth. An early edition of Burke's important essay on aesthetics, a literary precursor to the Romantic era. An important essay on aesthetics by Edmund Burke. This treatise was the first complete philosophical work separating and defining the beautiful and the sublime. In the essay Burke holds a preference for the Sublime, rather than Beautiful, an important step which heralded the transition from the Neoclassical era to the Romantic. Burke's essay was influential, with admirers being Denis Diderot and Immanuel Kant. This was Burke's only purely philosophical work, as an economist and Whig M.P. Rebound in a modern cloth binding. Externally, smart, with only a couple of minor marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean. Small chip to the tail of the title page. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
