Smith, Anthony Wayne (d. 1992). American labor lawyer and leading environmentalist and conservationist.
Typed Letter to Educator Harold Rugg of Teachers College, Columbia University, Signed by Labor Lawyer and Leading Environmentalist Anthony Wayne Smith, Future President of the National Parks and Conservation Association.
Washington, DC: 13 January, 1949. 1949. - Typed letter filling one side of an approximately 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of his personalized letterhead with a couple of lines on a follow-up sheet. Signed "Tony". The top edge of each sheet is creased & each has a tiny chip, a paper-clip mark & pinholes where a staple has been removed in the top left corner. Folded 3 times for mailing. Very good. Smith sends friendly regrets that as he only comes to New York at weekends for events such as CIO conventions he will not be in New York in the near future and cannot accept an invitation to take part in one of Harold Rugg's lunchtime forums at Teachers College. Smith's letterhead has a New York address but he had actually been living in Washington since 1937. Much of the letter concerns the travails of the National Conservation Foundation [NCF], and the impossibility of cooperation between communists and fellow travelers and trade unionists and democratic progressives. He notes that the NCF has now reorganized itself and he has decided to rejoin it. Anthony Wayne Smith [d. 1992] had worked as a labor lawyer in New York and took a variety of labor-related jobs when he moved to Washington. He was attorney for the AFL-CIO Political Action Committee from 1956 to 1958 when he became president and counsel of the National Parks and Conservation Association. The Army Corps of Engineers nicknamed him "Mad Anthony Wayne Smith" for the sharpness of his attacks on their construction plans for the Potomac Basin. He also orchestrated campaigns that led to the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts, Fire Island National Seashore in New York and Point Reyes National Seashore in California, among others. He was outspoken in his warnings against overdevelopment and overuse of National Parks. One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education, Harold Rugg [1886-1960] was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A civil engineer, he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education. He was responsible for producing the very first series of school textbooks from 1929 until the 1940s. Very good .

Autograph Letter Signed by the English Politician Sir Baldwyn Leighton, 8th Baronet Addressed to the British Barrister and Historian Edward Pears.
Grosvenor Square, November 30 [19th Century]. Grosvenor Square, November 30 [19th Century]. Good. - Over 50 words penned on 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide "52, Park Street, Grosvenor Square" stationery framed by black mourning borders. Sir Balwyn Leighton writes to the historian Edward Pears that he is sending him a corrected "proof copy" of his pamphlet "Poor Law, out-relief", requesting several copies when printed. He also inquires as to whether his other paper will also be printed. Signed "Baldwyn Leighton". Folded for mailing, the top edge is darkened with a small hole to the top right corner. The letter was likely once mounted into an album as evidenced by glue stains and paper remnants along the top edge of the verso. Good. The English Conservative Party politician Sir Baldwyn Leighton, 8th Baronet (1836-1897) was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He served in the South Salopian Yeomanry Cavalry. He was J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for Shropshire. Leighton was later elected as a Member of Parliament for South Shropshire. Classifying himself as a liberal Conservative party member, he published several pamphlets on "poor law" and "Labour" as well as the "Letters of the Late Edward Denison, MP". The British barrister Sir Edwin Pears (1835-1919) was a historian and author who, for a period of 40 years, lived in Constantinople. He settled there in 1873, practicing in the consular courts and served as president of the European bar in what is now Istanbul. Pears traveled throughout Turkey and its dominions and studied its history and culture. As a correspondent for The Daily News in 1876, he described Ottoman atrocities and Bulgaria's April Uprising. His book "Turkey and its People" was published in 1911. Good .

Vita E Martirio Di Luigi XVI. Re Di Francia E Di Navarra Immolato LI 21. Gennajo 1793. Coll'Aggiunta Di Un Esame Sui Decreto Di Regicidio Scritti in Francese Da Mr. De Limon E Per la Prima Volta Tradotti in Italiano Da L.M. P.
Milano: Nella stamperia di Giuseppe Galeazzi, 1793. 1793. - sc Octavo, 7-1/2 inches high by 5-1/8 inches wide. Disbound, lacking the covers, though the texblock is stitched and complete. 112 pages, illustrated with a full-page frontispiece portrait of King Louis XVI. The frontispiece is detached with a couple of tiny chips to the front edge. A complete bright and internally near fine copy which would be well worth rebinding. One of several editions published throughout Europe within 3 months of de Limon's discourse in Vienna. Geoffroi de Limon was an ardent defender of the monarchy who called for the reinstatement of that institution in France after the French Revolution. King Louis XVI was deposed by the French Revolution in 1789. Seeking to establish a Republic, the Jacobins feared that the antagonistic actions of Prussia and Austria might result in the re-establishment of the monarchy. To forestall such a possibility, the King was tried and executed by guillotine in 1793. Fair .
