Parkinson-Fortescue, 1st Baron Carlingford, Chichester (1823-1898). British Liberal politician who served as Chief Secretary for Ireland and was later President of the Board of Trade.
Lord Carlingford": A Richly Toned Woodburytype Oval Portrait of the Chief Secretary for Ireland Chichester Parkinson-Fortescue, 1st Baron Carlingford.
Lock and Whitfield, between 1874 & 1894. Lock and Whitfield, between 1874 & 1894. Fine. - A richly hued 4-1/2 inch high oval woodburytype portrait of Lord Carlingford mounted onto 11-1/4 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide stiff cream stock. A light gray printed decorative frame highlights the image. The subject's name is printed in the same light gray centered within the lower half of the sheet. "Lock and Whitfield" and "Woodbury Process" are printed at left and right along the lower edge. Near fine. The British Liberal politician Chichester Parkinson-Fortescue, 1st Baron Carlingford (1823-1898) was elected to Parliament for Louth in 1847. He served as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies under Palmerston and was admitted to the Privy Council in 1864. Appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland under Lord Russell and subsequently under William Ewart Gladstone, he came to hold a seat in Gladstone's cabinet and was admitted to the Irish Privy Council. He also later served as President of the Board of Trade. Appointed Knight of the Order of St. Patrick in 1882, he was an active supporter on Irish questions in his early years but later parted with Gladstone on the question of Irish Home Rule. Both a printing process and the print which it produces, Woodburytype was invented and patented by Walter B. Woodbury in 1864. A photomechanical process, Woodbury type prints are made from exposing a dichromate-sensitized sheet of gelatin to UV light shining through a photographic negative. Each area of the gelatin hardens to a depth in proportion to the amount of exposure to the light before it is then soaked in warm water. The relief image is then pressed onto a sheet of lead to create an intaglio metal printing plate. Fine .

Autograph Note Signed by the English Lawyer, Liberal Politician and Chief Justice of England John Coleridge, 1st Baron Coleridge.
May 29th, 1868. 1868. - A few words penned on his 4-5/8 inch high by 5 inch wide stationary with his pictorial seal embossed in blue at the top. The seal bears Coleridge's motto "Time Deum Cole Regem" embossed within a belt framing ears of wheat in front of a cross, an otter "statant" (i.e. standing with all four paws on the ground) in the foreground. Coleridge has penned but a few words "I am Madam faithfully yours John Duke Coleridge". Once folded, the note is mounted with glue from the verso onto heavier stock clipped from an album. Very good. The English lawyer, judge and Liberal politician John Duke Coleridge, 1st Baron Coleridge (1820-1894) was the great-nephew of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. An attorney practicing on the western circuit, Coleridge held several appointments and was elected to the House of Commons for Exeter. Appointed Solicitor-General under Gladstone, he was promoted to Attorney-General for England and Wales. He was subsequently appointed Chief Justice for the Common Pleas and then Lord Chief Justice of England. He was recognized by the "Women's Suffrage Journal" as a "firm and consistent" supporter of women's suffrage. Very good .
