Agnes Campbell, Lady Roseburn: A Contribution to the History of Printing in Scotland

Aberdeen, D Wyllie and Son 1925 62pp 24x16, cloth. glt letting to spine. Cloth sunned, pages roughly cut, very good thus. One of 150 copies printed. Agnes Campbell (1637 to 1716) was a highly significant figure in the history of both printing and women's emancipation in Scotland. After the death of her printer husband she built up their business to be the largest printer in Scotland. On remarrying she successfully petitioned Parliament to allow her business to remain under her control rather than her husband's. She was Defoe's Scottish printer, and was appointed as the printer to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in her own right in 1712.

(translated from the 3rd German edition), Boston, L. Prang, 1879. Litho title, xxxpp (mostly editor's preface) 356pp + 60 plates (including a number of lovely coloured lithographs) and incl. 166 text figs. All edges gilt. Gilt lettered and patterned embossed cloth. 28x21. Top of front hinge has small amount of pulling to paper, fep slightly torn, one page of preface loose, four sheets with crease marks to corners. Spine professionally repaired. Quite a fair copy. The German art historian von Falke's study was a pioneering investigation of interior decoration in its various historical aspects. With many beautiful and informative llustrations. Many of these seem to be created especially for the book; others are taken from artist's views.

Wonderful documenation of art in all its forms at a critical era and at the heart of the artistic avant garde in Paris. Visual arts, architecture, fashion for men and women, dance and so on. Coverage of more or less every important artist of the era. The International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris in 1925 is of course extensively covered [very heavy item, many need additional postage to some destinations].
