London, Frederick Warner and Co. c1880. Cloth. A scarce copy of this Bible Picture Book, copiously illustrated throughout with the prints of Joseph Martin Kronheim. A green cloth hardback with blindstamped back board. Bevelled edges. Stamped pictorial front board with gilt lettering. With Kronheim prints. A wonderfully illustrated children's Bible. Joseph Martin Kronheim was born in Magdeburg, Germany on 26th October 1810. He moved to Edinburgh, via Paris, when he was 22 before becoming established in London around 1846. In 1850, Kronheim acquired a license to operate the Baxter process and adapted it, using zinc blocks instead of wood blocks. This, however, resulted in a flatter finish. He then turned to lithography for a short time, but soon returned to printing by the Baxter process. In a green cloth binding with a pictorial front board. Externally generally smart. Slightly bumped and rubbed to extremities and head and tail of spine. Small section of marking to spine. Loss to cloth to lower extremity of rear board. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and small closed tear. There is a small ink inscription on the front endpapers. Very Good . Ill.: Joseph Martin Kronheim. England/London, Alf Cooke, c1905. Hardback. A scarce twentieth century children's book. An author and date is not stated to this work. Only 'Made in England.' 'Alf Cooke' colophon to the rear board. Alf Cooke Printworks was a business founded by its namesake in 1866. He expanded into colour printing in 1868 and in 1885 was appointed by Queen Victoria as 'Her Majesty's Colour Printer&apos. Lacking pages 11-14. Bobo's Motor Car followed another work in the series titled Bobo's Adventures. This is the second book in the series and to the front pastedown it is stated 'Other Titles in Preparation&apos. Extremely scarce, with none on Copac. This work follows Bobo's adventures with her many friends such as Teddy, Jumbo the Elephant and a gentleman who is a Golly Doll. The Golly character is the fictional character created by Florence Kate Upton in the late nineteenth century. The black doll has been the subject of controversy due to its depiction of people of colour. In quarter cloth binding with pictorial front board. Rear board is plain and grey. Externally, generally smart. Bumping to the head and tail of spine and patches of rubbing to the front board, heavier to extremities. Prior owner's light writing below the title. Front hinge is strained but fir. Evidence of a prior owner's writings to front pastedown and title page, which has been erased. Several pages throughout have previously erased writing from a prior owner. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned due to paper used. To pages 32-27 a prior owner has coloured the drawings using ink. The colouring is very charming. Occasional spots to pages, heaviest to pages 10 and 15. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

A very scarce US Christmas number of this periodical, in the original wraps. This work features a 'complete work' titled 'The First Christmas', and billed as 'forming the January part' of the periodical.Inscribed to the verso of the front wrap by publisher Alexander Strahan. Strahan published what was arguably one of the dominant periodicals in the mid nineteenth century, a monthly magazine called 'Good Words&apos. He established the journal 'The Day of Rest: An Illustrated Journal of Sunday Reading' in 1872.Strahan's inscription reads 'to Bertha, this, the 3rd copy printed of the first coloured magazine with all birthday love A Strahan', dated 10th December 1881, Edinburgh.Illustrated with eight full colour plates, and with colour borders and vignette illustrations to each page of text.From the library of A.
