, The History of Jack and the Bean-Stalk, and Michael Scott
The History of Jack and the Bean-Stalk, and Michael Scott
Glasgow, Privately printed, c1840. Unbound. A very scarce mid-19th century chapbook containing a retelling of the children's story of Jack and the Beanstalk, and the story of Michael Scott. A very scarce work, unbound but intact. A mid-19th century chapbook containing a retelling of the English fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk, and a story of the life of Michael Scott (or Scot). There have been many different versions of Jack and the Beanstalk. This one offers some justification for Jack's behaviour by stating that the giant killed his father, which is closer to Benjamin Tabart's moral tale than the story retold by Joseph Jacobs. To the rear of the chapbook is a story about the life of Michael Scot (1175-c1232), a Scottish mathematician and scholar in the Middle Ages. As Scot wrote manuscripts concerning subjects such as astrology, alchemy and the occult, many legends were made about him; he is here described as a 'Wizard&apos. Undated, dated through copies held at the British Library. Unbound but intact. Externally fairly smart, with a couple of marks to the wraps. The fold between the front and rear pages is torn, and there is closed tear to the rear of the wraps, affecting some of the text. All pages are detached, but are generally bright with the odd handling mark. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
