 Mrs. Barbauld, Lessons for Children
Mrs. Barbauld
Lessons for Children
London, Longman and Co.; Hamilton and Co.; Simpkin, Marshall, and Co.; et al. 1867. Cloth. A new pocket sized edition of this copy of Lessons for Children, originally published in 1778-9. This is one of Mrs. Balbaud's children's book. Together with her other work Hymns in Prose for Children, this book was considered revolutionary for children's literature as the author took in consideration children's needs such as a larger font with wider margins for children to read more easily, as well as developing a style of informal dialogue between parents and children, language which would become prevalent for generations in the all children's books that followed. Anna Laetitia Barbauld was a prominent English poet, critic, editor and author for children's literature. She was one of the very small number of women who wrote professionally and successfully at the time. In the publisher's original green cloth binding, with decorative gilt to front board and titles stamped in gilt to spine.Illustrated with charming wood engravings in text.
