Alden, John B. (manager), The Literary Revolution. May, 1880. Volume 1, No. 1
Alden, John B. (manager)
The Literary Revolution. May, 1880. Volume 1, No. 1
New York, American Book Exchange, Presumed Publisher, 1880. Wraps. Small newspaper style format, 4 pages. Presumably an advertising circular for the American Book Exchange publishing company, touting its many book offerings, as well as promoting their affordability and durability. This includes citing added costs of different fonts used by other publishers, as well as other 'ploys' that drive up the cost of books for the consumer, contrasting them with the Literary Revolution's cost effective practices. According to Raymond Shove, 'Few men have been more heartily disliked for their publishing activities by American publishers and booksellers than was John B. Alden,' due to his publishing practices that were perhaps borderline, if not outright, underhanded, causing turmoil between publishers and booksellers. It seems he was not always monetarily successful, but he did succeed in putting the works of popular authors in front of the public (see Shove's Cheap Book Production in the United States for previous quote). GOOD condition. Fold crease present. Some creasing, wrinkling and minor tearing along the extremities. Light toning. Good .
