"119" [=117], [1], [2 blank] pp.Very rare second edition of the first Swedish translation (abridged) of William Bligh's account of his voyage to Tahiti as commander of the Bounty and the mutiny and subsequent open-boat voyage of part of the crew in 1789, "one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history" (Hill). In 1787, the English naval officer William Bligh (1754-1817), who had accompanied Captain Cook on his third voyage to the Pacific, was sent off to the Pacific for the purpose of introducing breadfruit trees from the South Sea Islands to the West Indies as cheap food for the slaves. After spending five months at Tahiti, he set sail for the Caribbean by way of Tonga, where the famous mutiny took place. Bligh and 18 of his men were set adrift in the ship's small launch boat and made a remarkable voyage to Timor. "In the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland [= Australia] as he passed along it" (Wantrup).Samuel Ödmann (who signed the preface "S.O") made the present Swedish abridged translation, with added notes, translated from two German editions by Georg Forster and Johann Reinhold Forster, but Ödmann also checked his version against the London edition of 1790. It includes an additional chapter dealing with Captain William Sever's visit to the Society Islands in 1788 (an abridgement in Swedish of chapter 20 of Stockdale's Botany Bay, 1789) and some notes on Tahiti by the translator Samuel Ödmann.Ödmann's translation of Bligh's account is known in two editions, but since the title-pages give no edition statement and are textually identical, and the typesetting of the two editions is surprisingly similar, they are often confused. DuRietz's Swansea, a bibliography on books and articles relating to Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, Hawaii and the Pacific Ocean and its islands, presents the differences between these editions and dates them. The present second edition is much rarer, almost never appearing in the common reference works or on the market. With the bookplate of the Swedish treasurer and book collector Gustaf Emil Berndtsson (1875-1964), active in Göteborg, and a 19th-century owner's inscription on the inside front wrapper. With only a few minor spots and the spine partly tattered. Very good, wholly untrimmed copy. Very rare second (corrected and improved) edition (“1792” [= 1793]) of the Swedish translation of Bligh's account of a famous and important voyage to Tahiti and its infamous mutiny.l DuRietz, Swansea, series A (1731-1850), part 1, A1:1-6, A1x2 (cf. A1x1: 1792 ed.); Ferguson 129 (erroneously described as the 1792 ed.); LIBRIS 2437568 (2 copies: cf. 2437567 for the 1792 ed.); cf. [32], 160, [1], [1 blank] pp.Third revised edition of Blondel's famous work on the composition and medicinal values of the sulphur springs in Aachen and Burtscheid. The Flemish doctor François Blondel (1613-1703), whose full-page engraved portrait is inserted after the table of contents, devoted his life to the promotion of the medicinal qualities of these springs. Since Roman times, the springs were known to provide relief against rheumatism, gout and scrofulous disorders. Blondel became inspector of the springs in 1666 and instituted a drinking course of the mineral water. Blondel's promotion of the springs also provided the city of Aachen, which suffered a major fire in 1656, with an important source of income.Blondel first published the first edition in 1671, the second in 1685 and the present third enlarged edition appeared in 1688. It includes recommendations from Dutch and German doctors, signed 1687 and 1688. It was translated into German and Dutch. In good condition with only a few small stains. [20], “400” [= 488] pp.One of the most important and influential redactions of Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, the greatest and most popular work of Italian literature. Boccaccio (1313-1375) began writing the Decameron soon after the plague that decimated Florence in 1348 and finished it in 1353. It was immediately recognized as a great work, and has remained a classic ever since. It is a classic example of stories within a frame story, the frame story revolving around the plague in Florence. Ten young noble Florentines (seven women and three men) decide to leave the city to avoid the plague, settling in a villa in the countryside nearby. They entertain each other for ten days by each telling a story each day, making a hundred stories in all. Although Boccaccio has the young man Dioneo tell more naughty stories than the other characters, he also has the women tell some, especially on day seven, when Dioneo sets the theme as stories of women playing tricks on their husbands. Modern scholars often accuse Salviati of butchering Boccaccio's text but in fact he showed the greatest respect for it. The Church was more concerned with its own reputation than with eroticism per se, so in many cases Salviati could preserve the erotic escapades of priests, nuns, etc., by simply turning them into teachers, housewives or other people not seen as representatives of the Catholic Church. Salviati's redaction was a great success when it appeared in 1582, satisfying the Church and clearly also finding eager readers. With an early owner's monogram before the imprint. The title-page is worn and shows a faint water stain, one or two of the printed shoulder notes are very slightly shaved, and one or two leaves show a tiny marginal worm trail, but the book is generally in good condition. The binding is slightly rubbed, with some worm holes in the spine.l BMC STC Italian (17th century), p. 117; ICCU RMLE 024120; USTC 4033572; for Salviati’s redaction: D.T. Boccaccio reworked the 12th-century French love story of Floire (Florio), muslim Prince of Andalusia, and Blancheflor (Biancifiore), the orphaned daughter of his mother's Roman Christian lady-in-waiting. They grow up together in the royal household, but when they fall in love his parents try to break up the romance by selling her to merchants who will take her to Alexandria to join a harem. Florio, under the pseudonym Filocopo, rescues and marries her. He converts to Christianity and they return home where he ascends the throne and his people embrace Christianity. Boccaccio introduced many new elements into the story and told it with his usual flare for (often risqué) humour. It served as inspiration for writers around the world from Chaucer to Keats, and Boccaccio himself further developed several episodes for stories in his Decameron.Francesco Sansovino (1521-1583) had produced the first variorum edition of the Decameron in 1546 and then turned his editorial scholarship to Il Filocolo, beginning with Gaetano's text (editions in 1527 and 1538). With 2 early owners' inscriptions on the title-page, both struck through and part of one abraded. With a small hole in the title-page and the corners of a few leaves dog-eared, but otherwise internally in very good condition. The binding is worn, but the lovely manuscript title on the spine remains clear. Second edition of the best Renaissance redaction of Boccaccio's important, influential and entertaining first major work.l EDIT 16, 6334; Gay & Lemonnyer, col. 726; USTC 814845; cf. 72 ll.Second Giunta edition of the "Corbaccio", which first appeared in 1487 and was first (and similarly anonymously) printed by Filippo Giunta in 1516: "una materiale ristampa di questa edizione, fatta pagina a pagina e riga a riga" (Gamba); "ces deux editions sont assez rares" (Brunet). This bawdy satire, supposedly based on a Florentine widow who turned down Boccaccio, was as popular as it remains controversial for its scurrilous and misogynistic elements. The text is prefixed by a letter from Filippo Giunta’s son Bernardo "a’gli amatori della lingua Toscana"; leaves 57ff. contain Boccaccio’s letter to Pino di Rossi. With the engraved bookplate of Lord Robert Spencer (1747-1831), British Whig politician, on the front paste-down. The youngest son of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, the hero of the Seven Years’ War, Lord Robert was the nephew of the politician John Spencer, 5th paternal great grandfather of Diana, Princess of Wales, and brother of George Spencer, the great-great-great grandfather of Sir Winston Churchill. Occasional light brown stains and slight traces of worming to the foot margins of the first two leaves, but altogether in very good condition. A charming example of a rare and desirable edition.l Adams B2182; Bandini, Juntarum typographiae annales II, 199; Brunet I, 1016; Edit 16, CNCE 6267; Gamba 203 note; Panzer VII, 40f, 219; Renouard, Supplément, p. VI, CLXXIIII ll.Jean André issue of the extremely influential first French-language edition (by Adrien Sevin) of Boccaccio's first major work, Il filocolo (ca. 1336), a prose tale detailing the romantic love and adventures of Florio and Biancafiore (based on the ca. 1160 French verse romance Floire et Blancheflor), written at the request of Boccaccio's muse "Fiammetta". Boccaccio's version served as the model for Chaucer's more than fifty years later, but it is a reworking rather than a translation, so it was largely through the present printed translation that Il philocope, a precursor of the better known Decameron, became known north of the Alps. The fine woodcut illustrations first appeared in Janot's 1540 edition of Amadis de Gaula, and after the Philocope also for several other romances. The borders used with them in these works are apparently older, for two of the head borders are dated 1520. King François I of France, who reigned from 1515 to 1547, greatly admired the Italian Renaissance and encouraged Italian influences in many aspects of French culture. The present book reflects that movement both as a model of French Renaissance prose under Italian influence and as an example of book production, using new roman and italic types in the new style introduced under Italian influence in the 1530s.With the small letterpress bookplate and the armorial bookplate of Charles Bouchelet de Vendegies, Comte d'Hust (1772- 1851), and a later bookplate of the Swiss collector Albert Natural. With a few mostly marginal defects and early repairs, but with three repaired tears in the text (one also in a woodcut, but so skilfully repaired that it is barely visible in the woodcut). One of the repeated woodcuts has a small abrasion. Otherwise in good condition. The binding has restorations to the hinges and corners and the spine shows some superficial cracks and flaking, but nearly all of the tooling remains clear. The very influential first French edition of Boccaccio's first major work, with excellent woodcut illustrations.l BMC STC French, p. 71 (Janot issue); Brun, Le livre français illustré, p. 158; Mortimer (French) 105 (Janot issue); Rawles, Denis Janot ... [16], 99, [12] [1 blank] pp.First and only edition of this historical work on the Utrecht Diocese and on the abbots and priests of the most important medieval monastery in Holland, the Monastery of Egmont in the northern part of Holland by the Dutch historiographer Pieter Cornelisz. Bockenberg Goudanus (Gouda 1548-1617 Leiden). He wrote a history of Holland but came under attach of Janus Douza who had just written a history on the same subject. Through Johan van Oldenbarneveld Bockenberg was officially appointed Dutch historiographer in 1591.With a very interesting provenance: owner's entry on the title: 'Est Canonicarum Regularium in Wester-Blockero extra Horna'. The book belongs to the Regular Canons at Westerblokker near Hoorn, c. 40 km. north of Amsterdam. A 19th-century annotation on the verso of the front wrapper justly points out that this monastery - called 'Nieuwlicht' (Nova Lux), founded in 1388 - was demolished in 1573 (referring to Velius' history of Hoorn, p. 362). The author of the annotation suggest therefore that the library of this rich monastery must have been continued afterwards.A second ownership's entry is on the verso of the back cover, dated Sept. 1798r: W.C. Ackersdijck (1760-1843), a historian and lawyer from 's-Hertogenbosch, the father of the famous Utrecht professor Jan Ackersdijck. While Bockenberg’s name appears on the title-page, he also gives his initials and motto on the last printed page (H8v) above the colophon: “P.C[ornelissonio]. B[ockerbergio]. G[oudano] | Ne vita tragoedia”. Both the present copy and the UB Ghent copy have a second motto written below the printed one in a contemporary hand “Juste et pie vivamus”.With an owner's inscription in ink on the title-page. VII, [1], 461, [1]; [4], 435, [1] pp.First edition, edited by Caussin de Percival, of one of the first complete French-Arabic dictionaries. This dictionary of Egyptian Arabic was compiled by the Coptic Egyptian Ellious Bocthor, a native speaker, and extended with material collected by Caussin de Perceval during the latter's travels in Syria.Bocthor (1784-1821) travelled to France after serving as an interpreter in the Army of the Orient led by Napoleon Bonaparte. A highly talented linguist, Bocthor became professor of Vulgar Arabic at the École des Langues Orientales in Paris. As a native speaker he attacked the then common practice of teaching Arabic as a "dead language" (Coller). His early death disrupted the publication of the grand dictionary he had been working on for 15 years. Luckily, the manuscript was bought by the marquis of Clermont-Tonnere, who ordered Bocthor's successor at the École, Caussin de Perceval (1795-1871), to complete the dictionary. Some foxing throughout, otherwise an excellent copy. It was written by Clement August de Bode, member of the Russian legislation at Tehran"The author travelled in 1841 from Tehran to Esfahan, Persepolis, Shiraz, Kazeroun, Shushtar, Dezful, Susa, Khorramabad, Boroujerd and back to Tehran. It [this work] is mostly a travel book, however, the author gives a good picture of tribal life and especially the political situation in Fars; principally the hostility between the Qashqai tribe which controlled the countryside and the Qavam ol Molk family which controlled Shiraz. There are also descriptions of historical sites and monuments along the way" (Ghani).
