BERNINCK, H[endrik?].
[7 botanical watercolour drawings]. [Netherlands, ca. 1776]. Set of 7 watercolour drawings on laid paper of various sizes ranging from 23×19 to 23×30.5. Each mounted on a backing sheet in modern passepartout.
A set of botanical watercolour drawings signed by the Dutch artist H[endrik?] Berninck who was active in Amsterdam from ca. 1770 until at least 1789. The set includes 6 watercolours after Chinese originals, each depicting a flower, woody plant or branch from a fruit tree set on a somewhat flat background, and 1 floral still life, showing a flower in a pot, with 2 blossoming buds. Berninck started as a copper smith, but was able to live as an artist after an inheritance. Few of his works are known to survive, all flower paintings and drawings in the style of Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch. Only a few very tiny specks, otherwise all in fine condition.l For the artist: Scheen, p. 84; Thieme & Becker III, p. 460; Wurzbach I, p. 92.

136, [1], [1 blank]; [30] pp.Second known copy of the third edition (1635) of a rare satirical Dutch adaptation (first and second editions 1634) of a moralistic story in Latin by Filippo Beroaldo (1453-1505), possibly intended in this adaptation to satirize the Princes of Orange. The quotations from classical sources are given in Latin, each followed by a Dutch verse translation that takes some liberties with the text. Pieter Nootmans (active 1627-1635) contributed a verse about the book, printed on the back of the title-page. Following the main text is a drinking song by H. Rulant (active 1632-1634), with its own part-title, which had been published separately in 1632. We have located only one other copy of the present edition, in the library of Tresoar in Leeuwarden. The British Library database of bindings includes one binding by this Ghent binder. The title-page is worn and dirty, with a small abrasion obliterating the letter S in "Stichtigh", and the upper outside corner of the last leaf has been restored, with the loss of a few words of the text of the added drinking song. The binding is good, with some cracks in the hinges and minor damage along the edges.l KVK & WorldCat (1 copy); cf. [12], 112 pp.First edition, first issue, of a rare work on precious stones and pearls found in what the title calls the East and West Indies (but including the Gulf region), written by a Paris "marchand orphevre". It is most important for the author's new information on diamonds, pearls and pearl fishing, this last with considerable detail on the various pearl fishing sites in the Gulf. The book is dedicated to Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier and first cousin of Louis XIV. The extensive chapter devoted to pearls and pearl fishing notes the Persian Gulf as the most important source and names specific sites: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. Dans le Golfe Persique, principalement aux environs de l'Isle d'Ormus [= Hormuz] & Bassora [= Basra]: aupres de Baroyn [= Bahrain][,] Catiffa [= Qatif], Juffa [or Jafu?], Camaron [= Gamron/Bandar Abbas], & autres lieux de ce Golfe ..." (p. 74). "Very early, and important treatise on gemstones, gold & silver..." (Sinkankas). With marginal worm holes mostly at the head but slightly affecting the running head or first line of text in a few leaves, occasional marginal water stains, but otherwise in very good condition. Hinge slightly damaged, a few small worm holes and small tears in the spine and a few scrapes and scratches, but otherwise good. First edition of an important work on gems and pearls, especially interesting for pearl fishing in the Gulf, in an attractive French binding.l Alden & Landis 661/14 (7 copies, some possibly 2nd issue); GSabin 4957; Sinkankas 592 note.

Vue de la colonie Espagnole du Mississipi, ou des provinces de Louisiane et Floride Occidentale, en l'année 1802...Paris, Imprimerie expéditive, 1803. 8vo. With 2 folding engraved maps of the Louisiana territory by Alexandre Blondeau after Berquin-Duvallon, both coloured by hand. Modern red half morocco, richly gold-tooled spine.
XX, 318, 5, [5] pp.First and only edition in the original French, of a travel account of the territories of Louisiana and West Florida, then a French possession but administered by Spain. Pierre-Louis Berquin-Duvallon (1769-post 1814) was one of the many French plantation holders who had fled the Haitian Revolution on Saint-Domingue and settled in Louisiana. Embittered by his experience, he wrote an extremely negative report of Louisiana and its inhabitants, who had refused to admit the refugees' slaves. Nevertheless, after describing the geography and economy of the territories, Berquin-Duvallon gives a colourful account of the cities and their inhabitants, particularly of New Orleans. He found the latter to be a filthy place, unworthy to be titled a city, full of ramshackle buildings and streets that for the greater part of the year turn into open sewers. Its citizens fared no better, as he considered them to be noisy and amoral, they preferred drinking wine to conversation and only sought profit instead of education. The nightlife of New Orleans is particularly mentioned, with its gambling and endless dancing where the low orders indiscriminately mix: black and white, freeman and slave. In five specific chapters, the former plantation owner Berquin-Duvallon describes the various racial groups in the colony: white "creoles", white foreigners, freed people of colour and slaves. With some insignificant wear to the extremities of the boards and some offsetting of the colouring of the maps onto the header; a very good copy.l Leclerc, Bibliotheca Americana, 1038; Sabin 4962; Streeter coll. 1530; Howes 389.

4 nautical maps on [8] pp.Fine example of this exceptionally rare nautical work depicting in detail the Mediterranean, which was a standard reference for French sailors in the region. The four charts are very crisp and clear, and together show every part of the Mediterranean Sea and the coasts of the countries that border it. Maps by François Berthelot (dates unknown) are very scarce, both on the market and in libraries, possibly due to the practical purpose they served. The present collection can only be found in the library of the University of California Berkeley. The first chart is called Nouvelle carte de partie des cotes de terre Ferme et isles situees sur l´ocean, and shows the entrance to the Mediterranean, with the coasts of Spain, Portugal, France, the United Kingdom, and the north-west coast of the African continent, with the Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands. The second and third chart together form one large chart, titled Carte des Cotes de la Mediterranée. They show the east and west side of the Mediterranean sea respectively. The final chart is called Carte de l'archipel and shows the Aegean Sea, the part of the Mediterranean between Greece and Turkey, and the numerous islands in that region, in more detail. The collection of charts was first published in 1693, and continued to be updated and issued until the 1750s. Many of the editions are undated, but can be dated due to variations in the cartouche. The present collections was likely published in the 1720s.Berthelot was a French cartographer, hydrographer, and professor, according to the cartouche of one of the charts. He was one of a group of cartographers who created accurate and reliable maps of the Mediterranean at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century. Berthelot also published a book on sailing in 1691.The corners of the boards are lightly scuffed. With a light brown stain at the top of the gutter in maps 2-4, slightly affecting the image, and small, brown stains around the gutter of map 1. Otherwise in very good condition.l WorldCat 21023723 (1 copy); Zacharakis 215 and 216.

[1], [1 blank], [2], 3-148 pp.Rare account of Napoleon Bonaparte's campaign in Egypt (1798-1799), including Berthier's chronicle of the campaign and the official reports describing the Battle of Aboukir. Based on the various despatches sent to France in 1798, the first part describes the capture of Malta, the arrival in Alexandria, the Battle of the Pyramids and the revolt of Cairo. Of particular interest are several orders giving insight into the organization of French-occupied Egypt and concerning matters such as the distribution of bread, the free navigation of the Nile, the formation of a regiment consisting of former Mamluks and the establishment of a bureau to improve sanitation and prevent disease in Cairo. With its short-lived conquest of Egypt, France would introduce many modern ideas and inventions into the country, eventually leading to the independent and modernized Egyptian state under Mahammad Ali (1769-1849) and to the cultural renaissance in the Arab lands of the Ottoman Empire. The main part of the book consists of the official account written by General Berthier (1753-1815) for the French Minister of War and describing events from the capture of Malta to the Siege of Acre and the return of the French Army to Egypt. Following it are the two accounts written by Napoleon (1769-1821) for the Directorate and describing the Battle of Aboukir and the recapture of the fortress of Aboukir. All these accounts were published in instalments in the French newspapers, with the Relation appearing less than two weeks after the publication of the final instalment. By that time Napoleon had returned from Egypt, overthrown the Directorate and brought himself to power. With the binding lightly rubbed. Lacking pp. 1-2. Nouveau système de minéralogie.Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1819. 8vo. Modern marbled boards.
[4], VI, 314, [1], [1 blank] pp.First edition of the French translation of a classic mineralogical work by the Swedish chemist Jöhns Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848). "The methods of mineral classification existing at the time were based on appearance and physical properties. These seemed highly unsystematic to Berzelius. He concluded from his analytical experience that a logical classification could be based only on chemical composition. In his original system, first published in 1814, he arranged the minerals in terms of their basic constituents, although he later revised this and placed chief emphasis on the acid component" (DSB). The book opens with a dedication to the French mineralogist René Just Haüy and a brief preface. In the main text Berzelius sets out his development of a new system for classifying minerals (according to their chemical structure). The second half of the book sets out these new classes, orders, families and genera. All the minerals are mentioned by their French names followed by their chemical structure. Some foxing, otherwise in good condition.l DSB II, pp. 90-97; Hoover 122; Schuh I 537; Ward 202.
