70 pp.The first edition of an abridged French catechism with a Carib translation printed in a parallel column, written to prepare priests for missions to the Caribbean. The author, father Raymond Breton (Baune 1609-Caen 1679), was a French Dominican missionary and a noted linguist. He sailed for the West Indies in 1635 and devoted nearly 20 years to missionary activities. After his return to France in 1654, he was appointed sub-prior of the monastery of Preaching Friars at Blainville. Here Breton wrote several linguistic works that are now among the rarest records of the 17th-century Carib language. With the bookplate of Joannes B. Stetson on front paste-down. A very good copy.l Dampierre, Antilles françaises, pp. 49-50, 83-5; Sabin 7742; for the author: NBG VII, cols. 344-345.

25 engraved ll.Third or fourth known copy of the second edition of the very rare first volume of a finely executed print series of craggy landscapes and Italianized city views by Mathaeus (Mattheus) Bril, etched and engraved by Simon Frisius and first published by Hendrick Hondius, both at The Hague, in 1611. Some views contain New Testament scenes: prints 14-15 (Nativity), and 18 (Jesus? with 2 companions) and print 11 a half-hidden erotic scene. Visscher in Amsterdam acquired Hondius’s plates, replaced his name in “Ab H: Hondio|excusa,” with his own (“CJVisscherio”, with the CJV forming a monogram) and changed the year after “Anno” to 1651 (the first edition has “1611” in mirror image). He retained the “Cum privilegio.” from the first edition. Mathaeus Bril the younger was born in Antwerp, ca. 1550 and died at Rome in 1583. He was the son of the painter Mathaeus Bril the elder and older brother of the painter Paulus Bril (1554-1626). Mathaeus is less famous than his brother due to his premature death. The present mountainous landscapes no doubt took inspiration from his journeys through the Alps, but other features occasionally remind us of the Low Countries. Hondius published a companion volume in 1614 with nearly the same title, Topographia variarum regionum. Inventa à Matheo Bril Hagæ-Comit. “Ab H Hondio excusa. 1614.” (with “Cum privil.” at the foot of the plate). Visscher acquired its plates as well and published an edition in 1652, but the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig has a 1652 edition with imprint “P. de Reyger excudit”, perhaps because Visscher died in that year. While the present 1611 title-print (even in its 1651 state) still uses V for U, the 1614 title-print uses the modern round U. With a small and insignificant marginal water stain on the fore-edge of some leaves (not approaching the plate) a few marginal tears (that in print 15 ending on the plate edge) and the title-print very slightly browned, and with some creases (barely affecting the image), otherwise in fine condition. The inside front hinge has separated from the bookblock (along with the title-print).l KVK & WorldCat (Hamburg copy? plus 3 or 4 copies of the 1611 ed., incl. 1 with only 2 ll. incl. title-print); New Hollstein, Simon Frisius 98-122, all state II (2 copies); skd-online-collection.skd, item 988713 = inv. no. [2], XIV, [1], 6-390; 442 pp.Very rare first issue of the first edition of the most influential work on cultured eating ever published; only 500 copies were printed. In this first issue the “e” of printer’s address is printed horizontally. This is the only edition that was published while the author was still alive. The fame of the book was cause for countless re-issues, editions and translations. The author Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826) delivers his reflections on the culture of eating and gastronomy in a style that can be described as witty, refined and tasteful. It struck a chord with its contemporary readers and still does today, judging from the proverbs that were coined by Brillat-Savarin and remain in use: "The destiny of nations depends on the manner in which they feed themselves"; "A dessert without cheese is like a beautiful woman with only one eye" and many others. It is indeed a great French classic.Bookplate of Louis Rey on free endpaper of both volumes. A small repaired tear in the first free endpaper of volume 1. BRISTOW, James.
A narrative of the sufferings of James Bristow, belonging to the Bengal artillery, during ten years captivity with Hyder Ally and Tippoo Saheb.London, J. Murray, 1793. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf.
VI, 210 pp.Rare first London edition of the autobiography of an East India Company private who was captured by the forces of Hyder Ali and remained a prisoner for nearly ten years, first printed in Kolkata (Calcutta) in 1792. The forces of Mysore were the greatest Indian military adversaries that the English faced during their rule and attempts to rule in India, and this sparked the imagination of the people “back home”.The present autobiography by James Bristow tells the story of his capture by Hyder Ali in February 1781 near Pondicherry and the next ten years that he spent as his and Tipu Sahab’s captor. Bristow claims to have suffered a horrible incarceration at the hands of Haidar Ali. He paints a very negative image of Tipu, calling him “bloodthirsty”, accusing him of cheating his troops out of their pay, and saying he is "detested by the majority of his subjects", many of them Hindus. Bristow managed to escape on 28 November 1790, but became separated from his fellow escapees. He reached the British army only on 16 January 1791 and says he would have starved but for the kindness and help of Hindus both during his captivity and during the long and perilous flight after his escape. This eye-witness account proves a great source on daily life in the Indian military.Spine slightly rubbed, corners slightly bumped. Otherwise in very good condition.l John F. [1], [1 blank], 105 pp.Remarkable manuscript with beautiful illustrations and descriptions of the displays in the Royal Armouries in the Tower of London. As the armoury was engulfed by a large fire in 1841, the largest in the history of the Tower of London, some of the depicted armour has been destroyed, making the present manuscript a unique source on these objects. The work shows the armour of various British kings and nobles, including that of Kings Edward I and VI, Henry VI, VII and VIII, James II and V, and military officer Horace Vere. They are all on horseback, which is how the armour was displayed in the Tower of London at the time. The illustrations are beautifully hand coloured, which gives a good impression of how the armour must have looked. The included text describes the objects and gives extensive background information on the kings and nobles they belonged to.The Royal Armouries in the Tower of London is one of the oldest museum exhibitions in the world. One of the earliest recorded visitors was in 1498, when entry was only by special permission. The visitors in the 16th century who wrote about their experience, often called the display "disorderly", suggesting that little attention was paid to presentation at this time. This changed when the Stuarts reclaimed the throne in 1660. Two permanent, public displays were set up, to encourage visitors to marvel at the splendour of the British monarchy. One of the displays was called "The Line of Kings", which placed figures wearing the armour of former British kings on life-sized wooden horses. In 1825, The Line of Kings was relocated into a new building against the south side of the White Tower, where it stayed until the fire of 1841. The present manuscript describes this display during this time period. The edges, corners and hinges of the boards are somewhat scuffed, with some loss of paper on the spine, showing the brown cloth underneath. With very mild foxing on some of the leaves. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Nederlandsch magazijn, ter verspreiding van algemeene en nuttige kundigheden, 1843, p. 224.

[1 blank], [2], [1 blank], VI, 1-146, [2], 147-361, [1] blank, XXX, VIII pp. (lacking pp. 19-22).A rare issue of the Madras almanac, a landmark in the history of British-Indian colonial printing before the Mutiny in 1857. Styled on European almanacs, it is a great source of information on India and especially Madras in the years 1827-1829. The tradition of preparing and printing almanacs in India was quite new. The Madras almanac, first printed in 1799 and initially called the Madras register (and later, until its demise in 1935, the Asylum Press almanac), gives not only useful community information, such as birth and death rates for 1827-1828 and domestic events, but also offers glimpses into the British colonial and native Indian politics in India and the officers involved at that time. It therefore provided much important information for the British Indian colonists. Of special practical importance are the information and conversion tables for money, weights and measures and also the tables of roads from Madras to principal towns and military stations in the region. The Madras Almanac a practical guide for the British-Indian colonist in 1829, now provides us with a window into Madras society in the period 1827 to 1829.The original sheepskin rubbed and the later paper covering it chipped, corners bumped. Otherwise in good condition.l Orchiston, Sule & Vahia, The Development of Astronomy and Astrophysics in India and the Asia-Pacific Region (2018), p. 271; this issue not in Worldcat.

[BRITISH NAVY - BATTLE PLAN - ALGIERS].
Plan of the Bay and City of Algiers.[London?, 1816]. 35 x 44. With an illustration of the plan of attack and a view of the fortifications on the Mole at Algiers.
Contemporary handcoloured lithographed(?) plate with the plan for the Bombardment of Algiers in August 1816. The attack was instigated and won by Great Britain and the Netherlands, which was celebrated in London. The Bombardment of Algiers was part of a European campaign to end piracy against Europeans by North African countries. The goal of this attack was to free Christian slaves in Algeria and stop Omar Agha (?-1817), the of Dey of Algiers, from enslaving more Europeans. The attack was partly successful. Algeria freed around 3000 Christian slaves after the battle, but did not stop enslaving Europeans until later in the 19th century. The plan for the attack was made by Admiral Lord Exmouth, the commander of the fleet. The largest ships approached the harbour in a column, sailed to the zone were the Algerian guns could not reach them, and bombarded the defences. Other ships blocked the harbour, to attack the Algerian ships and prevent them from joining the battle. On the present illustration, each of the British ships is named and drawn in its planned position, thus giving an interesting visual insight into 19th-century naval tactics. The sheet is folded in half, with a tear along the top and bottom of the fold, somewhat browned and stained, with remnants of tape on the back. The plan and view remain clear and the colouring remains bright.

Die Krystallisation in geometrischer und physikalicher Hinsicht.Heidelberg, Mohr and Winter, 1820. 8vo. With 16 lithographed plates. Contemporary paste-paper boards.
XX, 200, [1], [1 blank] pp.First edition of the German translation of a work on crystalization by the French mineralogist and geologist André-Jean-François-Marie Brochant de Villiers (1772-1840). It deals with the geometry of crystals, as well as their formation, different types and forms, how to measure them, how to alter forms, and much more. "Brochant warmly supported Haüy's theories of crystal structure, although his writings also aided in the diffusion in France of A.G. Werner's mineral classification and nomenclature, as well as the early crystallographic ideas of C.S. Weiss" (DSB). "It is written in such a manner as to provide the beginner with a textbook but useful information to the expert as well. The first part provides a geometriacl description of crystals based on Haüy's theories. In this Brochant has helped by the careful examination of the collection of the School of Mines. The second part theoretically describes the physical phenomenon of crystallization, which had occupies the author's studies for some time" (Schuh). With some minor foxing. Binding only slightly rubbed. Overall in good condition.l DSB II, p. 482; Schuh I, 864; cf. Ward 324.

[8] (title and index) ll.; 36 (Heft 1-18); 16 (Heft 26-33); 6 (Heft 19-21); 10 (Heft 22-25); 4 (Supplement) pp.First edition of the complete series of Karl Joseph Brodtmann's lithographed natural history plates, most showing animals, including the plates in the supplement, not mentioned by Winkler. Brodtmann (1787-1862) was a Swiss artist, lithographer and printmaker. He is especially known for his beautiful and vivid lithographs of animals, respecting scientific accuracy. The present work contains 6 series with a total of 144 lithographs by Brodtmann, each series separately numbered, opening with a series of 12 plates showing people from all over the world, with their costumes, including East Indians, Sandwich Islanders and Inuits. The second series, forming the largest part of the work with 60 plates, shows other mammals: monkeys, bears, canidae (including wolves and hyenas) and felidae (including lions, tigers and panthers), horses and their riders (including an Arabian horse), mice, rats, bats, sciurdiae (squirrels and some other rodents), camels, elephants, giraffes, sheep, deer, rhinoceros, walruses, whales, dolphins and many more. Here as in the other series, many plates depict more than one species, so it covers a large number of mammals. They are followed by 32 plates of birds, including some exotic ones like parrots, toucans, a pelican, a nightingale and some birds of prey, including vultures and a condor. But Brodtmann also adds more common birds, like geese and galliformes (gamefowl). The work continues with 12 plates of reptiles and amphibians, including turtles, snakes, frogs and crocodiles. He ends his zoological plate collection with 16 plates mostly devoted to insects, depicting several species of beetles, butterflies and caterpillars, termites and flies, but also worms, arthropods, including scorpions), and spiders. Descriptive texts accompany all plates in the 33 Heften. The present copy also includes the 12 supplementary plates, including their texts, adding, for example, proboscis monkeys, lemurs, flying squirrels and several kinds of seals. The first part ("ersten Heftes") includes the original publisher’s wrappers, lithographed on blue paper, bound after the lithographed title-page. Heften 26-33 (birds) are bound between Heft 18 (the last on mammals) and Heft 19 (the first on reptiles and amphibians). Binding professionally restored and reinforced, covers are slightly rubbed and the extremities of the covers are slightly browned. Small brown stain on the top right corner of the outer edges. Edges of some plates a bit frayed and dust-soiled (especially plate 4 in the supplement), small tears in a few plates (not or barely affecting the image) have been professionally restored. Overall in very good condition. A very rare complete edition of Brodtmann's beautiful natural historical plates.l Winkler 105 (not noting the supplement); not in Nissen, ZBI.
