Beautifully bound album with a magnificent collection of 32 original photographs of Tasmania, made by John Watt Beattie (1859-1930) at the end of the 19th century. Beattie arrived in Tasmania in 1879 as an amateur dry-plate photographer of scenic views. He began to work with the Anson Brothers in 1882. In 1892, Beattie bought out the Anson Brothers' very large collection of large format studio portraits and negatives. The photographs include 10 views of Hobart and surroundings (including a view from the bay, a photograph of an original sketch by an eye-witness: "The first days of Hobart, Collins Camp, Sullivan's Cove, Feb. 1804", Elizabeth Street, Cathedral, Bellerive), Mount Wellington with hunter, Mount Ida, Lake St. Clair (3), Mount Byron & Cuvier, giant eucalyptus giant, cedar trees on way to Great Lake, Mount King William, from track to Arrowsmith, Track to Fern Tree Bower, forest views, Mount Olympus from Laura Creek, King Williams Pines, Lake Marion, Garrs Tree Hill track, Hartz Mountains, etc. Very good collection.l Long, Tasmanian Photographers 1840-1940: A Directory (1995), p.12; Michael Roe, [article on Beattie], in: Australian Dictionary of Biography VII, pp. 232-33.

XLIII, [5], 300 pp.First edition of a French biography of the Jesuit martyr Ignacio de Azevedo, by Father Gilles-François Beauvais (1695-1773), who modelled his book on the Italian biography by Father Cabral (pseudonym of Giulio Cesare Cordara) (1704-1785), published at Rome in 1743 under the title Relazione della vita e martirio del venerabile padre Ignazio de Azevedo. In the present biography, dedicated to King Stanislaus I of Poland, Beauvais made several additions, for example the "Martyre du Vénérable Père Diaz et de ses Compagnons", pp. 193-262. Most of the book is devoted to the life of the martyr Ignatius de Azevedo from Porto (1528-1570), who worked in Brazil as Visitator for the Jesuit Order. On 15 July 1570, he and his 39 companions at sea were killed by French Calvinist pirates near the Canary Islands. In 1854, these "40 martyrs of Brazil" were canonized. Beauvais's biography may be regarded as a loose translation, with additional material, of Cordara's biography, which was translated into Spanish in the same year and into German in 1856. A second edition of Beauvais's version was published at Brussels in 1854. The martyrdom of Ignacio de Azevedo and his companions has inspired many literary works up to the present day. Some faint marginal stains, a small corner of the last 2 leaves (and larger corners of the following endleaves) restored, not approaching the text. Boards scratched. [6], 321, [1] ll.Second known copy of the Mons issue of the first edition of a collection of Latin sermons on the Last Supper, the Passion and the resurrection of Christ, by the famous French theologian and polemicist Thomas Beauxamis (1524-1589). The dedication to Cardinal Louis of Lorrain is dated 1 January 1570. The present first edition was printed in Paris by the printer and bookseller Guillaume Chaudière, and the title-page bears his device, but he changed the imprint during the press-run to produce a small number of copies for the Mons bookseller Claude de Bronchim (“Monte in Hannonia. Apud Claudium Bronchinium”). Rousselle records no Mons publications before 1580, though the USTC records examples from 1553. This appears to be the only known book with the imprint of Claude de Bronchin, though he is recorded as a bookseller at Mons from 1569 to 1578, when he did business with (probably bought books from) Christoffel Plantin in Antwerp, but he appears to have died in the latter year.Beauxamis was born in Melun, France, where he joined a monastery of the Carmelite order. He studied philosophy and theology and became a Doctor of Theology in 1567. At the congregation of Albi he was vicar-general for three years and became prior of the Carmelite convents of Melun and Paris at about the same time. According to Cosme de Villiers, Anshelmus Steckelius made use of the present book for his Prectationes, meditationes in singulas uniuscujusque hebdomadae dies divisiae and his Enchiridion quadragesimale precationum diarium, both published at Munich in 1585. Beauxamis himself left many writings, the present being one of his most important. In good condition, with only occasional minor foxing and a few marginal worm holes in a few leaves.l USTC 443025 (1 copy; cf. 138312, the Paris issue); cf. VIII, 439, [1]; [4], 66 pp.First editions of two works on electricity by the Italian physicist Giambatista Beccaria (1716-1781), who was appointed to the chair of physics at the university of Turin in 1748 and was one of the scholars who helped transform electrology into a scientific discipline defending the theory of Benjamin Franklin.Ad 1: First edition, in the original Italian, of "Beccaria's last major contribution to the science of electricity" (DSB). It treats the theory of artificial electricity, especially in conducting bodies, deduced from the circulation of electricity in an ordinary apparatus. Beccaria explains and enlarges on Franklin's one-fluid theory of electricity. It contains descriptions of many experiments, with accompanying illustrations on the 11 engraved plates. It was translated into English, on Franklin's recommendation, in 1776.Ad 2: First edition, in the original Latin, of a collection of experiments and observations explaining the nature and properties of residual static electricity. Beccaria's interest in electricity "was reawakened by the work of a former student, G.F. Cigna, who in 1765 published an account of experiments that developed Nollet's elaboration of Symmer's famous manipulations with electrified silk stockings. Beccaria pursued these experiments with all his skill, inventiveness, and energy, largely because they seemed to favour the anti-Franklinian double-fluid theory. … Beccaria, who would not admit action-at-a-distance, supplied this deficiency with a complicated scheme of electrical atmospheres and "vindicating," or regenerating, electricity. These ideas … subsequently led Volta, while seeking alternatives to them, to the invention of the electrophorus" (DSB).Bookblock cracked, with some leaves a bit loose, a few leaves slightly browned and some occasional spots. Binding heavily rubbed, with much of the gold lost in the tooling on the spine. 23, [1 blank], [3 (numbered [175]-177)], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank] pp. and 150 plates.Grand collection of collotype photographic plates of monuments, views and other scenes in Egypt and Nubia by the French photographer Émile Béchard. Each of the 150 plates is accompanied by a short description, based on the works of renowned Egyptologists, Orientalists, and other scientists like the philologist Champollion who deciphered Egyptian hieroglyphs.Notable plates in the present series include views of Cairo, the pyramids, the valley of the kings, the Karnac temple complex and many other monuments. The original photographs of the present collection by Béchard has won the "medailled d'or" at the "Exposition Universelle 1878", also known as the third Paris World's Fair, as proudly stated in the preface. A loose translation reads: "However, with regard to the photographs that we have had reproduced by the unalterable processes of collotype, let us recall here that the jury of the awards at the Universal Exhibition of 1878 judged them worthy of a first class gold medal awarded to their author, Mr. Émile Béchard" (p. 5).Émile Béchard (1844-?) was a French photographer, active during the 1860s, 1870s and 1880s. "Working in Egypt from 1870 to 1880, the photographer Émile Béchard (1844- ?) is above all known for his genre scenes and cunningly composed Egyptian views, as well as his carefully constructed versions of Egypt’s cultural heritage, ancient or medieval...". (M. Volait, Emile Bechard. The New Cairo in 1874. See: https://heritage.bnf.fr/bibliothequesorient/en/emile-bechard-new-cairo-article).Émile and Henri Béchard together with Hippolyte (Délié) are often thought to be 3 different photographers, related by a family- and/or business-connection (see the Encyclopedia of nineteenth-century photography, p. 131). The Met Museum suggests another theory, in which Émile and Henri are the same person, namely Émile Henri Béchard, and Hippolyte was a distributor of Béchard's work in France. The present album is not bound, the half title-page is somewhat browned and scuffed, the edges of the leaves are very slightly browned and frayed. The margins leaves show some occasional very slight foxing, but the plates remain very clear. Large and beautiful photographs by Bechard: excellent vintage prints, mostly in superior condition. They represent the popular Egyptian and Nubian types, frequently in close-ups. Nissan N. Perez states that this part of the work of a photographer specializing in views of sites and monuments "has escaped general attention" (cf. Focus East, p. 123, reproducing the photograph of water carriers resting). Includes: a scribe; a sheikh reading the Qur'an, merchants and grocers, a group of ulemas (religious scholars) reading the Qur'an, an Arab drawing water, whirling dervishes, Arab peasants (a fellah carrying water), a sheikh going to the mosque, a game of Mangala, water carriers, mat manufacturers, Sheikh Sadad, a descendant of Mohammed, a falconer, washerwomen, an Arabic singer, a young fellah, a Darabouka player, labourers, a public fountain, a beggar, Arabs at prayer, Arabic coffee, etc. Béchard was active between 1869 and ca. 1890. "His work is distinguished by the superb quality of his prints and the generally spectacular presentation of even the most common sites, such as the pyramids. His studies of people and costumes are even more interesting and point to a very personal involvement of the photographer in the life and customs of the country. His cityscapes and urban scenes were mostly taken from unusual angles in an attempt to cope with the narrow and confined spaces" (Nissan N. Perez).Binding repaired in places.

[16], 146 pp.Rare Dutch translation of a work on fortification giving a very detailed description of the mathematical problems encountered in designing and building fortifications. It was originally published in German in 1664 by the German military engineer Peter Becker. The translation is dedicated to Prince William Hendrik of Nassau. The engraved title-page shows workmen with tools and plans facing a female figure, while a child or putto and an ape sit drawing. The ape may be a joke alluding to the informal Dutch name for a pantograph, which translates as "drawing ape".A very good copy.l Jordan 0208 (5 copies); Hoogendoorn BEKP01D (6 copies, incl. 1 incomplete); Sloos, Warfare 08049; STCN (3 of the same copies); cf. [8], “CCCI” [= 303], [1 blank], [20] pp.Rare first and only Portuguese edition of a classic biography of Thomas à Becket (ca. 1118-1170), Archbishop of Canterbury. It is a free translation into Portuguese, probably by Diego Afonso de Miranda, of the Latin “quadrilogus”, a conflation of four biographies written by Becket’s contemporaries, which was the first biography of Becket to be printed, published in four books in 1495 (that edition added a supplementary fifth book containing documents and letters, not included in the present translation). The quadrilogus brings together information from four of the most important primary sources, written soon after Becket’s death by William of Canterbury (active 1170-1174), John of Salisbury (1120-1180), Herbert of Bosham (Becket’s own clerk, active 1162-1189) and Alan of Tewkesbury (d. 1202). There are two versions of the quadrilogus: the earlier one, compiled ca. 1198/99, was not published until 1682, while the present one, compiled ca. 1212/13 was first printed in 1495. The present is therefore confusingly known both as the “second quadrilogus” and as “quadrilogus I”. From the library of the 19th-century Condes de Azevedo e de Samodães, renowned as “one of the best collections of Portuguese books” (Borba de Moraes), auctioned in 1921, with its ink stamp in the margin of A1r and José dos Santos’s catalogue description inserted on a slip (formerly tipped onto the front endpaper). With the title-page in facsimile and the preliminaries in a neat manuscript facsimile. Binding slightly worn, head and foot of spine slightly damaged, some browning and water stains, some repaired flaws, tears or wormholes affecting the text.l Adams B439; José dos Santos, Catálogo da importante e preciosissima livraria que pertenceu aos notaveis escritores e bibliófilos Condes de Azevedo e de Samodães, pp. 10-11; Suarez & Woudhuysen, eds., The book: a global history (2013), p. 410; USTC 340817 (7 copies); Wilkinson, Iberian books, 18342 (same 7 copies); cf. [6], 263, [1 blank], [12] pp.Second and most important edition, in the original Latin, of the greatest work by the father of English history, the Venerable Bede (672/73-735 AD), his Ecclesiastical history of the English people, completed ca. 731 AD. It begins with the Roman invasion of England in 55 BC and covers the introduction of Christianity to England and the entire history of England up to Bede's own day. Although nominally a religious history it remains the most important source for English history in general for its period. Few works have ever dominated a subject as much as Bede's history, which established the notion of English history, served as the most important source for his period for nearly every writer who followed, and remains today an essential primary source for any history of England before 735. This work even largely established today's practice of dating events from the birth of Christ and the use of the term 'anno domini' (AD). This edition is also an impressive example of Renaissance typography in Antwerp, five years before Plantin set up his printing office. Lacking the blank leaf A4. With mostly marginal foxing and some minor browning in the first few quires and an occasional later sheet, a few marginal worm holes, mostly confined to quires R to Y, and an occasional minor stain or small marginal tear, but still in good condition, most leaves very good. The binding was refurbished in the early 19th-century, the hinges are cracked and the front free endleaf is browned, but most of the tooling is well-preserved, and the portrait roll was used so extensively (each of the four portraits appears about 15 or 20 times) that one can find an abundance of crisp impressions.l Adams B452; Belg. Typ. 277; Index Aureliensis 115.647; USTC 400809 (erroneous collation).
