S. Knight (ed.);
Robin Hood in Greenwood Stood Alterity and Context in the English Outlaw Tradition,
Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Paperback, XVIII+234 p., 21 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503540542.
¶ New studies of the changing meaning of the myth of Robin Hood, from the Middle Ages to the present. The Robin Hood tradition is a rich assembly of exciting stories, more than five hundred years old and still thriving. From medieval ballads of yeoman resistance and gentrified Renaissance stories of Lord Robin versus bad King John, the tradition survived lustily into modern film, through which Robin Hood, played by major stars like Fairbanks, Flynn, and Costner, has become a truly international hero of natural law. This richly varied tradition enables scholars to study how different periods have understood the concept of Robin's noble resistance to wrongful authority. These new essays uncover innovative topics like Robin's relation with the cult of archery in the late Middle Ages, the purpose of the recently discovered 1670s? Forresters manuscript of outlaw ballads, and what Thomas Love Peacock thought when in 1815 he met in Windsor Forest a man called Little John. Other essays explore the social meanings and contexts of the texts, from the stark early ballads and their contacts with both Catholicism and Protestantism, through to modern excitements like the Kevin Costner film of 1991 and the links between Robin and Batman. Just as the five-hundred-year tradition of the Robin Hood story is alive today, so this collection shows how vital and varied is modern analysis of the myth of the best known and most loved of all the outlaws. S. Kocher;, Allegories of Love in Marguerite Porete's 'Mirror of Simple Souls',
S. Kocher;
Allegories of Love in Marguerite Porete's 'Mirror of Simple Souls',
Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, X+218 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503519029.
¶ This volume analyses the role of allegory in Marguerite Porete's Mirror of Simple Souls, the oldest known mystical work written in French, and the only surviving medieval text by a woman writer executed as a heretic. Marguerite Porete's Mirror of Simple Souls, dating probably to the 1290s, is the oldest known mystical work written in French, and the only surviving medieval text by a woman writer executed as a heretic. This volume analyses its use of interconnected allegories that describe the soul's approach toward God in terms of human social relationships. These include romantic love between lovers in same-sex and mixed-sex pairs, relations among people of differing social rank such as servants and nobles, and rich and poor engaged in economic transactions such as taxation and gift-giving. Gender, rank, and exchange serve as remarkably versatile allegories for spiritual states. Porete uses comparison as an organizing principle that underlies her supple and creative use of allegory, personification, parables, metaphors, similes, proverbs, and glosses. The theologian invites her audience to cross boundaries among literal and figurative registers of meaning, in ways that are emblematic of the soul's ultimate leap toward the divine. Porete's social allegories, the author contends, can provide us with valuable evidence of a medieval thinker's conceptions of God, gender, language, and human capacity for change. Languages : English, Middle French.

 F.W. Korsten;, Lessen in literatuur,
F.W. Korsten;
Lessen in literatuur,
Nijmegen, Vantilt, paperback, 17x24 cm, 336 pagina's. ISBN 9789077503461.

Charters, Cartularies, and Archives The Preservation and Transmission of Documents in the Medieval West. Proceedings of a Colloquium of the Commission Internationale de Diplomatique (Princeton and New York, 16-18 September 1999),
Turnhout, Brepols, 2002 Paperback, X+185 p., 15 x 23. ISBN 9780888448170.
¶ Charters are among the richest sources for the history of medieval Europe. The historical sub-discipline of diplomatics is devoted to the study of these documents. In Charters, Cartularies, and Archives, a distinguished international group of diplomatists address thirteen cases of transmission and preservation of medieval documents. A recurrent theme in the volume is the actual preservation of individual charters, but the content of originals was transmitted in other ways as well. Several chapters discuss questions relating to recopied originals, cartularies, and a range of other archival practices for retaining documents during the Middle Ages. Many of the authors focus on how documents were organized in archives and in cartularies during the period. Others discuss the notions of 'original document' and 'copy' - both their relationship to each other, and to the legal validity of the document in question. The volume ranges over a wide chronological and geographical scope, with contributions spread across Europe and the Middle Ages from the eighth-century Lombard kingdom to late medieval Douai. Several chapters focus on institutions in medieval France, but areas such as Scandinavia, Bohemia, and Italy are also represented. The chapters of this volume derive from papers delivered at a colloquium of the Colloquium international de diplomatique in Princeton and in New York in autumn 1999. Languages : English.

M.K. Lafferty;
Walter of Chatillon's 'Alexandreis'. Epic and the Problem of Historical Understanding,
Turnhout, Brepols, 1998 Paperback, 240 p., 16 x 25. ISBN 9782503505763.
¶ This study presents Walter of Chatillon's Alexandreis and his exploration of the problems of interpretating not only languages, but also the texts, philosophies, religions and literatures of the past. Walter of Chatillon, the twelfth-century Latin poet now famed for his satirical lyrics, acquired international renown in the Middle Ages for his epic on Alexander the Great, the Alexandreis. This work did for the Middle Ages what Vergil had done for the Romans, proving the ability of the moderni to rival the ancients in learning and the arts. The Alexandreis immediately joined the Aeneid in the medieval paideia and was read in schoolrooms throughout Europe in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The Alexandreis enters into the twelfth-century debate about education. The intellectual world was rapidly changing, as the schools became specialized and professionalized, threatening the hitherto secure position of the liberal arts and Latin literature in the educational curriculum. At the same time, translations from Arabic and Greek, not only of the works of Aristotle, but also of Arabic philosophers, had begun to alter the concerns and methodologies of Western scholars. Theologians increasingly used Hebrew commentaries in their studies of the Hebrew Scriptures. The awareness of the intellectual achievements both of the ancients and of highly-civilized non-Christian contemporary cultures had reached a new peak. Twelfth-century intellectuals were presented with the challenge of assimilating the flow of new works and ideas into western historiography and the Latin world-view. Walter's exploration of the problems of interpretating not only languages, but also the texts, philosophies, religions and literatures of the past, is the subject of this study. Maura K. Lafferty studied Classics at Wellesley College, The University of North Carolina and has received her PhD in Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto. She has written on Walter of Chatillon's Alexandreis and lyrical poems, and also on medieval manuscripts of the classical epic. Languages : English, Latin.

Loet Swart;
Nijmegen, Vantilt, paperback, 600 pagina's. ISBN 9789077503607.

Sentences - Book 1: The Mystery of the Trinity,
Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Paperback, LVIII+278 p., 150 x 230 mm. ISBN 9780888442925.
¶ Peter Lombard's major work, the four books of the Sentences, was written in the mid twelfth century, and as early as the 1160s, the text was glossed and commented on in the schools. There is hardly a theologian of note throughout the rest of the Middle Ages who did not write a commentary on the Sentences. Yet in spite of its importance in Western intellectual history and its capacity to excite many generations of students and teachers, the Sentences has received little attention in more recent times. Indeed, it has been called 'one of the least read of the world's great books'. This volume makes available for the first time in English a full translation of Book 1 of the Sentences. It consists of forty-eight Distinctions, the bulk of which deal with God in his transcendence and with the mystery of the Trinity. The person of God the Father is the topic in Distinction iv, that of God the Son in v-ix, that of God the Holy Spirit in x-xviii. Distinctions xix-xxxiv are deeply concerned with the language that can be used in describing the Trinity and the relations among the divine persons. The remaining distinctions deal with the divine attributes as they become manifest in God's action towards creatures. An important concern is the preservation of God's sovereign freedom and the avoidance of any confusion regarding the absolute transcendence of God, despite his graceful self-disclosure in creation and revelation. The volume contains an introduction to Peter and to the Sentences and its first book, a list of the major chapter headings, and a bibliography. Languages : English, Latin.

Turnhout, Brepols, 2011 Paperback, approx. LXXV+304 pages., 150 x 230 mm.Languages : English, Latin. ISBN 9780888442963.
¶ This volume contains the final volume of Lombard's major work, described as "one of the least read of the world's great books", which treats the sacraments of the Church. Peter Lombard's major work, the four books of the Sentences, was written in the mid-twelfth century and, as early as the 1160s, the text was glossed and commented on in the schools. There is hardly a theologian of note throughout the rest of the Middle Ages who did not write a commentary on the Sentences. Yet in spite of its importance in Western intellectual history and its capacity to excite generations of students and teachers, the Sentences has received little attention in recent times. Indeed, it has been called 'one of the least read of the world's great books'. Book 3 closed with a reflection on the relative inadequacy of the Old Law, because what it commanded could not be done well or easily in the absence of grace. While the sacraments of the Old Law were only signs, the sacraments of the Church are also the principal instruments of that grace now freely available to Christians. These sacraments are the main subject of Book 4, taking up forty-two of its fifty Distinctions: Baptism is treated in Distinctions 2-6, confirmation in 7, the Eucharist in 8-13, penance in 14-22, extreme unction in 23, sacred orders in 24 and 25, and marriage in 26-42. The Book concludes with eight Distinctions on the last things ' the resurrection of the body, purgation, hell, the last judgement, and eternity.
