¶ Heldinnenbrieven vormen een klein maar bijzonder literair genre dat pas onlangs is herontdekt. In het Nederlandse taalgebied blijken er vanaf de vijftiende eeuw in navolging van Ovidius honderden in versvorm te zijn uitgebracht. Het gaat om zogenaamd vertrouwelijke brieven van beroemde figuren uit de geschiedenis: van Cleopatra tot Maria Magdalena, van Michiel de Ruyter tot Amalia van Solms. Zij proberen op dramatische momenten in hun leven een verre geliefde of intimus te overtuigen. In werkelijkheid komen die ontboezemingen echter niet van de afzenders. De heldinnenbrief is de travestie ten top. Achter veelal vrouwelijke personages gaan meestal mannelijke dichters schuil. Ze dragen bij aan een literair spel door telkens op Ovidius en op elkaar te varieren. Zo ontstaan er complete fictieve correspondenties. Maar het verzinsel zit nu eenmaal ingebakken in het genre, waaraan ook Vondel en Hooft zich hebben gewaagd. ¶ A prized possession of the Cistercian convent of Marienbrunn in Rulle near Osnabruck in northern Germany was its richly illuminated gradual dating to c. 1300, which is of great significance in the history of medieval art for several reasons. With 52 historiated initials iconographically complex in their literary quotations from the liturgy, the manuscript ranks as one of the most lavishly decorated books of its type to survive. Painted in an elegant courtly Gothic style, it is ascribed in a prefatory inscription to the nun Gisela von Kerssenbrock, who wrote, notated, and decorated the manuscript "with golden letters and beautiful images." Such an encyclopedic listing of a scribe-artist's labors is unparalleled in medieval scribal colophons. The high quality of the miniatures ranks her among the most gifted women artists of the Middle Ages. Gisela is depicted in two self-portraits within the manuscript, in one of which she is leading the nuns of Rulle in singing the Christmas hymn, visual evidence that she was the choirmistress at this convent. The manuscript's images reflect the intellectual ambience of encloistered nuns who were steeped in the annual liturgical cycle of feasts with its associated bible readings, theological commentary, sermons, music, dramatic ritual, and artistic decoration. As it was used in the nuns' daily celebration of the mass, the book is an eloquent witness of the communal religious life of medieval women rather than their private meditations or mystical experiences.This study explores the imagery and texts associated with major feasts of the liturgical year and the novel ways in which music and text are woven into the artistic program of Gisela's manuscript. In particular, her book shows the seminal importance of the Easter celebration for convent life, as well over half of its illustrations are clustered in the Easter season; and the manuscript repeatedly gives artistic expression to the nuns' hopes of heaven. ¶ Of all the Old Testament books, the Book of Job remains acutely contemporary today. Written between the 6th and 3rd c. B.C., it deals with subjects such as the presence of evil in the world, the misery, the quest for justice, the faith, and the behavior of people when they face sudden twists and turns of life. It seems that the ancient text had been illustrated since the Early Christian period because of its fascinating novel-like narrative style. In her own study on the Book of Job, Stella Papadaki-Oekland probes into all the Byzantine illuminated manuscripts of the illustrated Greek text. The number of miniature illustrations included in these fifteen manuscripts, dating from the 9th to the 16th century, comes to more than 1800 of which 2/3 of the about 380 illustrated herein are previously unpublished manuscript images. The book is an unabridged version with minor changes of Papadaki-Oekland's Inaugural Dissertation at Heidelberg University (1979) and is published posthumously by her daughters, Helen-Aina and Astrid-Zoe -in homage to Byzantine Art. Membres du Felibrige, celles-ci ont choisi d'ecrire en occitan a une epoque ou l'usage de cette langue decroit rapidement. La lecture qui est ici proposee retient trois considerations. La premiere est strategique : il s'agit d'observer par quels moyens litteraires se conjuguent la promotion de la langue, la reflexion sur la mort et la mise en scene de personnages feminins. ¶ Dit boeventaaltje is thans zo goed als uitgesproken. Niettemin werd tot in het begin van de vorige eeuw het Bargoens veel gebruikt door ambulante handelaars zoals marktkramers en leurders. Door die kramer- en boeventaal kon men in het bijzijn van anderen zorgeloos onderling overleggen om een zaakje te regelen. Het Bargoens, waarvan de Zeelse variant Brigade wordt genoemd, was ook levend in onder andere Sint-Niklaas en Ninove. Paul Van Hauwermeiren verzamelde vier literaire teksten in het Bargoens van Zele. Het gaat om de parabelvertelling "De verloren zoon", "De Gentse vrijage van Jelle en Mietje", een drinklied en het spannende verhaal van de bende van Jan Praet. In deze studie worden die teksten voor het eerst gebundeld en besproken. Bovendien wordt het Bargoens ontleed in woordsoorten en komen ook de herkomst, de geografische spreiding en de geschiedenis ervan aan bod. Na elke tekst is een verklarende woordenlijst opgenomen. Als toemaatje is een Dictionnaire Burgoensch patois de Zele, een nog onuitgegeven woordenboekje Brigade-Nederlands (ca. 1860-1865), opgenomen.

¶ The birth and flowering of canonical jurisprudence in the twelfth century is one of the most striking and fruitful developments of the age, marking an important turn in the history of the Church and in framing the essential elements of the rule of law in political and social life. Raymond of Penyafort was an important participant in these developments. Born near Barcelona in 1175, he became a teacher of canon law at Bologna, the greatest centre of legal studies. He joined the newly founded Order of Preachers (Dominicans), and championed multilingual education of the friars for a more effective evangelization of Muslims and Jews. He became Master General of the Order in 1238, and died in 1275. He was canonized in 1601 and has been declared the patron saint of canon lawyers. Pope Gregory IX appointed Raymond to produce a comprehensive compilation of papal legal decisions. The result, the Decretals of Gregory IX (1234), would remain normative in the Catholic Church until 1917. Raymond drew on it to compose his Summa on Marriage, a summary of learned reflection on the law of marriage, to aid his Dominican brothers in hearing confessions, where numerous problems touching on marriage would have been encountered. The definition of marriage and of its ends, stages and impediments, arrangements and consequences are the subject of the work. This translation of it offers students and scholars alike a comprehensive presentation of the medieval teaching on marriage - learned in content, practical in orientation. Languages : English, Latin.
